Mid-Holocene vegetation dynamics in the Tejo River estuary based on palaeobotanical records from Ponta da Passadeira (Barreiro-Setúbal, Portugal)

This paper presents the results of pollen and charcoal analyses carried out in the sedimentary formation of Ponta da Passadeira, south of the Tejo River estuary, Portugal. The data provide information regarding the evolution of the coastline and ecosystem of the estuary during the mid and late Holocene. The study focuses on a group of upright woody fossilized tree remains that, together with those identified earlier by Garcia-Amorena et al. (2007), form part of the fossil forest of Ponta da Passadeira. Eight remains were identified as Pinus pinaster, four as Pinus pinea and one as Pinus sp. The characterization of materials used in the archaeological field needs an experimental approach in order to avoid the destruction or perturbation of artworks. In order to afford this purpose, a multi-analytical spectroscopic approach is regularly used. The documentation, dissemination, and enhancement of Cultural Heritage is of great relevance. To that end, technological tools and interactive solutions (e.g., 3D models) have become increasingly popular. Historical silk fabrics are nearly flat objects, very fragile and with complex internal geometries, related to different weaving techniques and types of yarns. These characteristics make it difficult to properly document them, at the yarn level, with current technologies. Broadband dielectric spectroscopy of 0.4PMN-0.3PSN-0.3PZN ceramics

In this paper, results of the broadband dielectric spectroscopy of 0.4PbMg1/3Nb2/3O3-0.3PbZn1/3Nb2/3O3-0.3PbSc1/2Nb1/2O3(0.4PMN-0.3PZN-0.3PSN) are presented. Dielectric spectra of these solutions were investigated in a broad frequency range from 20 Hz to 100 GHz. Very strong and broad dielectric relaxation was analyzed in terms of distribution of relaxations times, using Tichonov regularization method. It revealed slowing down of the longest relaxation and the mean relaxation times in the agreement with the Vogel-Fulcher law and the Arrhenius law, respectively.
The effects of Pr3+ doping on the dielectric and photoluminescence properties of BaTi0.9(Yb0.5Nb0.5)0.1O3 ceramic

Abstract The praseodymium Pr3+ doped BaTi0.9(Yb0.5Nb0.5)0.1O3 (BTYN01) ceramic, under low concentration (0.1%), was prepared by a conventional ceramic fabrication technique and its phase structure, microstructure, dielectric, vibrational and photoluminescence (PL) properties was studied. Both X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman studies confirmed the incorporation of Pr3+ into A-site lattice of BTYN01. The structure of Ba0.9985Pr0.001□0.0005Ti0.9(Yb0.5Nb0.5)0.1O3 (BTYN01-Pr) shows the coexistence of Pm 3 ¯ m -cubic symmetry (∼10%) and P4mm-tetragonal symmetry (∼90%) at room temperature. The diphenylethane initiator 3,4-diethyl-3,4-(p-methoxyphenyl)-hexane (T–OCH3) was synthesized. By cocondensation of bisphenol A or C and the bisphenol derivative (“T”) of T–OCH3 with phosgene, polycarbonate macroinitiators PC(TxA1-x) and PC(TxC1-x) with different compositions x were made. The thermal fragmentation of T–OCH3 and the copolycarbonates was investigated with and without a radical scavenger both in solution and in the bulk state. This paper documents arsenic concentrations in 157 groundwater samples from the island of Ischia and the Phlegrean Fields, two of the most active volcano-hosted hydrothermal systems from the Campanian Volcanic Province (Southern Italy), in an attempt to identify the environmental conditions and mineral-solution reactions governing arsenic aqueous cycling. On Ischia and in the Phlegrean Fields, groundwaters range in composition from NaCl brines, which we interpret as the surface discharge of deep reservoir fluids, to shallow-depth circulating fluids, the latter ranging from acid-sulphate steam-heated to hypothermal, cold, bicarbonate groundwaters. In this work, we compared microwear features and enamel thickness from upper molars (M1 and M2) of extinct Xerinae squirrels from the Miocene of Namibia (Vulcanisciurus sp) and the Iberian Peninsula (Atlantoxerus nov. sp. and Heteroxerus rubricati). We also examined the microwear from young and adult specimens of one extant squirrel, Atlantoxerus getulus, to compare it with the extinct species. Both, the microwear features and enamel thickness showed that the Miocene African species presented a more abrasive diet than the Iberian ones.

[1] Water played a major role in the formation and alteration of rocks and soils in the Columbia Hills. The extent of alteration ranges from moderate to extensive. Five distinct rock compositional classes were identified; the order for degree of alteration is Watchtower ≅ Clovis > Wishstone ≅ Peace > Backstay. The rover's wheels uncovered one unusual soil (Paso Robles) that is the most S-rich material encountered. Clovis class rocks have compositions similar to Gusev plains soil but with higher Mg, Cl, and Br and lower Ca and Zn; Watchtower and Wishstone classes have high Al, Ti, and P and low Cr and Ni; Peace has high Mg and S and low Al, Na, and K; Backstay basalts have high Na and K comp…
