Birch (Betula spp.) wood biochar is a potential soil amendment to reduce glyphosate leaching in agricultural soils

2015

Glyphosate (N-(phosphonomethyl) glycine), a commonly used herbicide in agriculture can leach to deeper soil layers and settle in surface- and ground waters. To mitigate the leaching of pesticides and nutrients, biochar has been suggested as a potential soil amendment due to its ability to sorb both organic and inorganic substances. However, the efficiency of biochar in retaining agro-chemicals in the soil is likely to vary with feedstock material and pyrolysis conditions. A greenhouse pot experiment, mimicking a crop rotation cycle of three plant genera, was established to study the effects of pyrolysis temperature on the ability of birch (Betula sp.) wood originated biochar to reduce the l…

Poplar rotation coppice at a trace element-contaminated phytomanagement site: A 10-year study revealing biomass production, element export and impact…

2019

Abstract Growing lignocellulosic crops on marginal lands could compose a substantial proportion of future energy resources. The potential of poplar was explored, by devising a field trial of two hectares in 2007 in a metal-contaminated site to quantify the genotypic variation in the growth traits of 14 poplar genotypes grown in short-rotation coppice and to assess element transfer and export by individual genotypes. Our data led us to conclusions about the genotypic variations in poplar growth on a moderately contaminated site, with the Vesten genotype being the most productive. This genotype also accumulated the least amounts of trace elements, whereas the Trichobel genotype accumulated up…

Analytical approach for the mix design optimisation of bituminous mixtures with crumb rubber

2018

The present paper provides a basis for defining a mix design method specifically tailored to rubberised asphalt that takes into account the behaviour of crumb rubber. An analytical approach to quantifying the recovered deformation of crumb rubber in the post-compaction phase has been developed in order to adjust the number of gyrations proposed by the Superpave method for compacting specimens of hot mix asphalt using a Superpave gyratory compactor. The maximum allowable amount of rubber has been calculated. Finally, a step-by-step protocol has been proposed in order to fabricate and compact crumb rubber modified mixtures with the gyratory compactor.

Decacyclene as complexation manifold: synthesis, structure and properties of its Fe2 and Fe4 slipped triple-decker complexes.

2006

Reaction of [(eta(5)-Me4EtC5)Fe(II)Cl(tmeda)] (tmeda = N,N,N'N'-tetramethylethylenediamine) with a polyanion solution of decacyclene (1) results in the formation of the triple-deckers [{(eta(5)-Me4EtC5)Fe}2-mu2-(eta(6):eta(6)-decacyclene)] (3) and [{(eta(5)-Me4EtC5)Fe}4-mu4-(eta(6):eta(6):eta(6):eta(6)-decacyclene)] (4). Metal complexation in 3 and 4 occurs on opposite faces of the pi perimeter in an alternating mode. The decacyclene ring adopts a gently twisted molecular propeller geometry with twofold crystallographic symmetry (C2). Complex 4 crystallizes in the chiral space group C222(1); the investigated crystal only contains decacyclene rings with M chirality. The handedness can be ass…

Morphotropic ceramic solid solutions of the Pb(B3+½Nb½)O3- PbTiO3binary system

2000

Abstract The structure, dielectric, ferroelectric and electromechanical properties of lead lutecium niobate-titanate (PLuNT) and lead erbium niobate-titanate (PErNT) binary systems are reported. The data of phase diagram, crystallographic symmetry and morphotropic phase boundaries (MPB) are provided. High values of the electromechanical coupling coefficients kp = 0.66, kt = 0.48, k31 = 0.36 of (1−x)PLuN − xPT ceramics are attained in compositions near the MPB at x≈0.41.

HgGa2 Se4 under high pressure: An optical absorption study

2015

High-pressure optical absorption measurements have been performed in defect chalcopyrite HgGa2Se4 to investigate the influence of pressure on the bandgap energy and its relation with the pressure-induced order–disorder processes that occur in this ordered-vacancy compound. Two different experiments have been carried out in which the sample undergoes either a partial or a total pressure-induced disorder process at 15.4 and 30.8 GPa, respectively. It has been found that the direct bandgap energies of the recovered samples at 1 GPa were around 0.15 and 0.23 eV smaller than that of the original sample, respectively, and that both recovered samples have different pressure coefficients of the dir…

Influence of diamagnetic impurity on mid‐IR absorption in antiferromagnetic insulator NiO

2005

-1 was studied in polycrystalline Ni c Mg 1-c O solid solutions with c=0.99, 0.98, 0.97, 0.95, 0.90, 0.80, 0.70 and 0.60. The composition and temperature dependences of the absorption suggest that the band has magnetic origin re- lated to simultaneous excitation of two-magnons at the Brillouin-zone boundary and one phonon. -1 in polycrystalline NicMg1-cO solid solutions. Polycrystalline solid solutions NicMg1-cO (c=0.99, 0.98, 0.97, 0.95, 0.90, 0.80, 0.70 and 0.60) were prepared using ceramic technology from the appropriate amounts of aqueous solutions of Mg(NO3)2·6H2O and Ni(NO3)2·6H2O salts, which were mixed and slowly evaporated. The remaining dry 'flakes' were heated up to 500-600 oC to…

[Ag67(SPhMe2)32(PPh3)8]3+: Synthesis, Total Structure, and Optical Properties of a Large Box-Shaped Silver Nanocluster

2016

Engineering the surface ligands of metal nanoparticles is critical in designing unique arrangements of metal atoms. Here, we report the synthesis and total structure determination of a large box-shaped Ag67 nanocluster (NC) protected by a mixed shell of thiolate (2,4-dimethylbenzenethiolate, SPhMe2) and phosphine (triphenylphosphine, PPh3) ligands. Single crystal X-ray diffraction (SCXRD) and electrospray ionization mass spectrometry (ESI-MS) revealed the cluster formula to be [Ag67(SPhMe2)32(PPh3)8]3+. The crystal structure shows an Ag23 metal core covered by a layer of Ag44S32P8 arranged in the shape of a box. The Ag23 core was formed through an unprecedented centered cuboctahedron, i.e.,…

A Roof Tile from 1678 Found in Calasparra (Murcia) as an Abiding Medium of Writing

2017

Analysis of a red clay roof tile which bears an heretofore unknown inscription of the late 'procesal' script style and humanistic characters along with the date 1678, marking its exact year of manufacture. This tile was found on the roof of an old barn structure in ruins, located on 'Horno de Calasparra' Street (Murcia), before its demolition. We will also point out some of the more significant aspects of the historic profession of tile making, which has all but disappeared.

2016

In southwestern Niger, near Niamey, several thousand single-use bloomery furnaces have been mapped and identified. The archaeological study of approximately 30 furnaces and their slag reveals the existence of four methods for iron smelting: three types of pit furnace and one slag-tapping type. The slag pit furnaces are clearly differentiated by the form and volume of their pits. All slag-tapping furnaces drain off slag through small openings. The slag is tapped either vertically or laterally. According to radiocarbon dates, the smelting activity developed in the 2 nd century AD and intensified through to the 14 th century. It continued to evolve until the middle of the 20 th century. The lo…
