A Correlation Retina in Standard 0.6um : Application in Positioning System
2003
International audience; We have designed and fabricated a programmable retina that is capable of recognizing patterns stored in memory in real-time. Each of the pixels of the retina is composed of a photodiode and an electronic device used during the programming phase to digitize the image of the pattern to recognize into a binary image stored in latches. The array of pixels is thus partitioned into two complementary disjoint sub-sets with all the photodiodes of the same sub-set connected together in order to obtain the sum total of the currents. During the analysis phase, an optical correlation between the projected image and the reference binary image memorized in the circuit is done. The…
Design of complex sheet metal forming processes: a new computer aided progressive approach
2010
The growing interest in sheet metal stamping processes, particularly in automotive industry, led to three main issues in this field: request of very complex shapes; growing interest in springback control; solution of multi-objective problems. This makes the design of the sheet metal stamping processes very difficult, since the number of both design variables and design objectives are progressively increased; therefore, proper design methodologies to reduce times and costs are highly required. In this paper, an innovative design approach able to manage and optimize complex stamping operations is proposed. In particular, a progressive design approach based on the integration between numerical…
An Innovative Conversion Device to the Grid Interface of Combined RES-Based Generators and Electric Storage Systems
2015
This paper is focused on the development of an innovative device, which is based on a bidirectional converter, for the interface to the supply utility grid of combined renewable-energy-source-based generators and electric storage systems. The device can be controlled so as to ease the interface between the low-voltage grid and photovoltaic or wind generators combined with lithium-ion $\hbox{LiFePO}_{4} $ batteries, taking into account the requirements of the reference technical standards for users connection and offering different ancillary services. The operational functioning of the device, the architecture, and its electronic components, as well as laboratory and field test activities an…
A Simple Model for the Axial Thrust in V-Belt Drives
1996
Simple formulas can relate axial thrust and torque of rubber V-belt drives, taking into consideration the radial penetration of the belt.
Optimal Blankholder Force Path in Sheet Metal Forming Processes: An Al Based Procedure
1999
Abstract Blankholder force plays a fundamental role in the deep drawing process mechanics since it controls, by friction, the material flow into the die cavity. The availability of computer controlled hydraulic presses in the industries promoted a new research field focused on the definition of optimal BHF histories, function of the punch displacement; such studies were aimed to the determination of the so called “process window”, i.e. the BHF path which permits to obtain the maximum height sound component avoiding both wrinkling and tearing. In the paper a design procedure is proposed in order to determine the optimal BHF path in an axisymmetric deep drawing process: in particular, a close…
Developing a Knowledge Base about the Technological Forces within the Asymmetric Incremental Forming Process
2015
Asymmetric single point incremental forming (ASPIF) has been recognized as a solution with potential in manufacturing small batches or single sheet metal parts. The approach presented in this paper presents the development of a knowledge base regarding the values of the technological force within the ASPIF process and the influence of some technological parameters such as feed, speed of the punch, thickness of the part and step, upon them. The method is based on the use of the information provided by the CNC machine sensors. Relationships between the torques developed by the drive motors on each axes and the technological forces will be set in order to refine the raw information displayed o…
On the material flow in fsw of T-joints: influence of geometrical and tecnological parameters
2008
Friction stir welding (FSW) now definitively reached a large interest in the scientific community and what is more in the industrial environment, due to the advantages of such solid state welding process with respect to the classic ones. The latter aspects are relevant also with reference to joints characterized by a complex geometry. What is more, advanced FEM tools permit to develop effective engineering of the processes; quantitative results can be acquired from numerical simulations once basic information, as the process mechanics and the material flow, are certain. Material flow plays a fundamental role in FSW since it determines the effectiveness of the joints or, in turn, the insurge…
Shape and dimensional accuracy in Single Point Incremental Forming: State of the art and future trends
2007
Abstract The paper is aimed to discuss some relevant issues concerning an innovative sheet metal forming technology, namely Single Point Incremental Forming. The advantages of this technology are addressed, including its capability to provide effective answers to some impellent industrial requirements: process flexibility, strong customer orientation, production of highly differentiated goods at low industrial costs. As well some relevant drawbacks are highlighted, mainly as concerns the level of accuracy permitted by the process. A wide recognition of the research efforts in this field is presented, taking into account some general considerations on the difference sources of shape and dime…
Ultimate Strength and Fatigue Durability of Steel Reinforced Rubber Loading Hoses
2010
Loading hoses in an offshore loading buoy system in the North Sea were investigated with respect to extreme load resistance and fatigue durability. Both experimental work and fatigue life analyses were carried out. The FLS test is based on the principle of a service simulation test according to the American Petroleum Institute (API) 17B guidelines. The test results given in number of endured cycles from the laboratory test are scaled to the in-service conditions. Although the life estimate is based on one full scale test only, an attempt has been made to account for the inherent scatter in fatigue life. Furthermore, the results are validated by large test series with small scale test specim…
Partial discharges on IGBT modules: Are sinusoidal waveforms sufficient to evaluate behavior?
2014
In recent years, the increasing use of AC-DC converters, especially in the field of renewable energy sources has led to the implementation of new modulation techniques, in particular the ones based on the pulse width modulation. The purpose of the present work is to verify the different behavior that is obtained when the components are subjected to the partial discharge test carried out with a sinusoidal waveform, and when they are subjected to PWM stress-type, similar to the actual signal generated by this type of electronic components. By considering equal rms value of the fundamental sine wave, the comparison has shown different partial discharges patterns.
