Ultrasound as a Promising Tool for the Green Extraction of Specialized Metabolites from Some Culinary Spices
2021
Spices are a popular food of plant origin, rich in various phytochemicals and recognized for their numerous properties. The aim of the study was to evaluate the antioxidant and antimicrobial activity, as well as the content of specialized metabolites, of aqueous extracts of three spice species––garlic (Allium sativum L.), ginger (Zingiber officinalle L.) and turmeric (Curcuma longa L.)––prepared by green extraction methods. Ultrasound treatment increased the chromaticity parameter b value of turmeric and ginger extracts, thus indicating a higher yellow color predominantly due to curcuminoids characteristic of these species. Ultrasound-assisted extraction significantly increased the content …
Spectrophotometric determination of vitamin C using the copper(II)-nioxime-ascorbic acid system following stabilization in a propylene glycol medium
1989
Abstract A spectrophotometric method for the determination of Vitamin C is proposed. The procedure is based on formation and stabilization of the ternary complex Cu(II)-nioxime-ascorbic acid in 80% ( v v ) propylene glycol-water medium. The method has a high degree of tolerance for the determination of ascorbic acid in the presence of other active substances or excipients likely to be present along with vitamin C in pharmaceutical formulations. The suggested method has proved to be rapid and precise and has been successfully applied to different commercial pharmaceutical preparations of vitamin C. Precision, measured on the relative standard deviation, did not exceed 0.73%.
Analisis Nutrisi Umbi Ubi Jalar (Ipomoea batatas (L.) Lam.) untuk Konsumsi Bayo dan Anak-anak Suku Dani di Distrik Kurulu Kabupaten Jayawijaya
2018
<em>Sweet potato is an important staple food crop especially for the local people of Central Highlands Jayawijaya. There are many accessions that have always been maintained its existence to enrich their various uses. Traditionally, sweet potato accessions were grouped based on the utilization, such as for animal feed, cultural ceremonies, consumption for adults, as well as for infants and children. This study was aimed to analyze the nutritional value of sweet potatoes consumed by infants and children of the Dani tribe. Chemical analyses were conducted at the Laboratory of Post-Harvest Research and Development Center, Cimanggu, Bogor. The results showed that each of 4 (four) sweet po…
Vitamin C, vitamin A, phenolic compounds and total antioxidant capacity of new fruit juice and skim milk mixture beverages marketed in Spain
2007
Abstract The growing interest in new functional foods with special characteristics and health properties has led to the development of new beverages based on fruit juice–skim milk mixtures. The proliferation of ready-to-drink beverages has caused the market to focus its interest on these products. Commercial conventionally pasteurized or sterilized beverages based on a mixture of fruit juice and skim milk were evaluated nutritionally for their concentrations of vitamin C, vitamin A and phenolic compounds and their total antioxidant capacity, taking the influence of physicochemical parameters into account. The main contribution to the total antioxidant capacity (TEAC, trolox equivalent antio…

N-3 fatty acids modulate antioxidant status in diabetic rats and their macrosomic offspring.
2006
We investigated the role of dietary n-3 polyunsaturated fatty acids (n-3 PUFA) in the modulation of total antioxidant status in streptozotocin (STZ)-induced diabetic rats and their macrosomic offspring. Female wistar rats, fed on control diet or n-3 PUFA diet, were rendered diabetic by administration of five mild doses of STZ on day 5 and were killed on days 12 and 21 of gestation. The macrosomic (MAC) pups were killed at the age of 60 and 90 days. Lipid peroxidation was measured as the concentrations of plasma thiobarbituric acid reactive substances (TBARS), and the total antioxidant status was determined by measuring (i) plasma oxygen radical absorbance capacity (ORAC), (ii) plasma vitami…
Metabolic Clearance of the Antioxidant Ascorbic Acid in Surgical Patients1
2005
Background A reduction of plasma ascorbic acid concentration in the post-operative period has been well documented and is associated with an increase in post-operative complications. The underlying reason for the decreased concentration of ascorbic acid in the plasma is not clear. However, only an increased post-operative requirement for ascorbic acid would justify a substitution. Therefore, we investigated the pre-operative and post-operative metabolic clearance of ascorbic acid. Materials and Methods We calculated the metabolic clearance subsequent to intravenous bolus injection of 6 mg ascorbic acid/kg body weight in 15 patients before and after they underwent major maxillofacial surgery…
Oxidative markers in children with severe obesity following low-calorie diets supplemented with mandarin juice
2010
Aim: To evaluate the effect of supplementing a hypocaloric diet with mandarin juice, a food with a high content of antioxidants (vitamin C, flavonoids and carotenoids), on biomarkers of oxidant/antioxidant status of severe obese children. Methods: Forty obese children were randomized into two groups pair-wise in a 4-week controlled intervention study. Both groups followed a hypocaloric diet. One group received additionally a supplementation of 500 mL of 100% mandarin juice daily. Clinical data, anthropometry, dietary intake and fasting blood samples were collected at baseline and after the intervention. Lipid peroxidation was assessed by circulating levels of malondialdehyde, and protein …
Clinical effect of vitamin C supplementation on bone healing: A systematic review
2022
Background: The aim of the present systematic review was to evaluate the clinical effect of vitamin C on bone healing after bone fracture or bone reconstruction procedures. Material and Methods: In October 2020, Cochrane Library, Scopus and PubMed-Medline databases were searched without restrictions to identify animal and human studies that fulfilled the eligibility criteria. Outcome measures were bone healing time, bone gain (mm), bone density and adverse events. The risk of bias assessment of the selected studies was evaluated by means of Cochrane Collaboration's Tool for randomized clinical trials, while randomized clinical animal trials were assessed according to SYRCLE's tool. Addition…
Antioxidant capacity of cow milk, whey and deproteinized milk
2009
The total antioxidant capacity (hydrophilic plus lipophilic) of sixteen different commercial samples of pasteurized and ultra high temperature (UHT) treated milk was determined using the oxygen radical absorbance capacity assay using fluorescein as a fluorescent probe. A significant correlation between the percentage of fat and the value of the total antioxidant capacity was found in milk samples obtained from the same batch of raw milk. Analyses of the whole milk, whey and deproteinized milk showed that the major contributor to the total antioxidant capacity of whole milk was the casein fractions, while albumin was the major contributor to the total antioxidant capacity of whey protein. Hy…
