Baltijas loma internacionālajās brigādēs Spānijas pilsoņu kara laikā
2015
Vuosikymmenet suomalaisen hiihtohistorian kulisseissa : tapaustutkimus vapaaehtoistoiminnan merkityksistä ja muutoksista Lahden MM-hiihdoissa
2017
Lahden Salpausselällä on pitkät perinteet pohjoismaisten hiihtolajien kilpailuareenana. Pohjoismaisten hiihtolajien MM-kilpailut on järjestetty siellä yhteensä seitsemän kertaa seitsemällä eri vuosikymmenellä. Lisäksi Lahdessa on kilpailtu vuosittain pohjoismaisten hiihtolajien maailmancupin osakilpailut, Salpausselän kisat. Kumpaakaan näistä tapahtumista ei oltaisi voitu järjestää vuosien saatossa ilman sitoutuneiden ja kokeneiden vapaaehtoisten joukkoa. Lukuisat vapaaehtoiset ovat olleet mukana kisojen vapaaehtoistoiminnassa jo useamman vuosikymmenen ajan. Tässä laadullisessa tapaustutkimuksessa selvitettiin, millaisia merkityksiä pitkään vapaaehtoisena toimineet antavat vapaaehtoistoimin…
Preliminary Estimation of Deoxynivalenol Excretion through a 24 h Pilot Study
2015
A duplicate diet study was designed to explore the occurrence of 15 Fusarium mycotoxins in the 24 h-diet consumed by one volunteer as well as the levels of mycotoxins in his 24 h-collected urine. The employed methodology involved solvent extraction at high ionic strength followed by dispersive solid phase extraction and gas chromatography determination coupled to mass spectrometry in tandem. Satisfactory results in method performance were achieved. The method"s accuracy was in a range of 68%108%, with intra-day relative standard deviation and inter-day relative standard deviation lower than 12% and 15%, respectively. The limits of quantitation ranged from 0.1 to 8 μg/Kg. The matrix effect w…
Shoulder muscle activation during stable and suspended push-ups at different heights in healthy subjects.
2015
Abstract Objectives To analyze shoulder muscle activation when performing push-ups under different stability conditions and heights. Study design Comparative study by repeated measures. Setting Valencia University laboratory. Participants 29 healthy males participated. Main outcome measures Subjects performed 3 push-ups each with their hands at 2 different heights (10 vs. 65 cm) under stable conditions and using a suspension device. Push-up speed was controlled and the testing order was randomized. The average amplitudes of the electromyographic root mean square of the long head of the triceps brachii (TRICEP), upper trapezius (TRAPS), anterior deltoid (DELT) and clavicular pectoralis (PEC)…
Inside “Pandora’s Box” of Solidarity: Conflicts Between Paid Staff and Volunteers in the Non-profit Sector
2020
Non-profit organizations (NPOs) are quite complex in terms of organizational structure, diversity at the workplace, as well as motivational mechanisms and value rationality. Nevertheless, from the perspective of organizational psychology, the systematic analysis of this context is scarce in the literature, particularly regarding conflicts. This qualitative study analyzes types, prevalence, and consequences of conflicts in a large NPO considering as theoretical framework several consolidated organizational psychology theories: conflict theory, social comparison theory, and equity theory. Conflicts were analyzed taking into account volunteers' perspective, who have been the consistent protago…
A simple high-performance liquid chromatography (HPLC) method for the measurement of pyridoxal-5-phosphate and 4-pyridoxic acid in human plasma.
2014
Abstract Background Low concentration of plasma pyridoxal-5-phosphate (PLP) is associated with hyperhomocysteinemia and inflammation. Most methods for the measurement of plasma PLP require large specimen volume and involve the use of toxic reagents. Methods We have developed a HPLC method for the measurement of PLP and 4-pyridoxic acid (4-PA) in plasma, which requires small specimen volume. The samples are prepared without adding any toxic reagents. Furthermore, we have examined whether intake of vitamin B 6 affects the concentration of plasma PLP and 4-PA. Results The coefficient of variation of the method was 6% and the recovery of the added vitamin in plasma was about 100%. The concentra…

Driven by technological advances in hardware (positioning systems, environmental sensors), software (standards, tools, network services), and aided by various open movements (open, linked, government data) and the ever-growing mentality of sharing for the greater good (crowdsourcing, crowdfunding, collaborative and volunteered geographic information), the amount of available geo-referenced data has seen dramatic explosion over the past few years. Human activities generate data and traces that are now often transparently annotated with location and contextual information. At the same time, it has become easier than ever to collect and combine rich and diverse information about locations. Exp…
Benefits of formal voluntary work among older people. A review
2011
Background and aims: A narrative review of quantitative population-based longitudinal studies was conducted to examine the association of formal voluntary work and personal well-being among older people doing the voluntary work and those being served. Methods: To be included, the study had to be published in a peer-reviewed journal, written in English and conducted in Western countries, participants were at least 60 years of age, the study employed a longitudinal or experimental design, the methodology and outcomes were explicitly described, and voluntary work quantified as visits or hours within a certain time frame. Results: Sixteen studies out of 2897 met the inclusion criteria for the r…
An economic perspective on crime, its costs, crime fighting and rehabilitation efforts
2010
This study will examine the economic issues surrounding crime and reintegration measures aimed at prisoners, particularly but not exclusively in Germany. To do so it will be necessary to give an overview about the crime and crime-fighting situation in Germany. The focus is on violent and street crime. White collar crime will be mentioned only briefly. The starting point will be to examine the cost of crime and the problems concerning its measurement. These include for example the economic costs of murder or the largely ignored cost of rehabilitating the victims of crimes such as rape. They often suffer from severe trauma. Further it will prove necessary to add the indirect, immaterial costs…
