Effect of clenching on biomechanical response of human mandible and temporomandibular joint to traumatic force analyzed by finite element method

Purpose: The purpose of the present study was to analyze the effect of clenching on the biomechanical response of human mandible and temporomandibular joint (TMJ) to traumatic force by the finite element (FE) method. Material and Methods: FE models of the mandible and the TMJ in resting and clenching positions were prepared. Distribution and magnitude of von Mises stress were analyzed by applying force as a point load in the symphyseal, canine, body and angle regions of the mandible. Studies on predictive virtual models based on finite element analysis of the behaviour of geomembranes

The study shown in this paper presents the behaviour of geomembranes used at the ecological landfills. For this goal was used a method designed to elaborate the virtual models of 3D geomembrane with one ply or 2 plies disposed at 30°, 45° and 90° and based on this model there were developed a number of 20 particular cases. For each situation it was realized the nonlinear analyses for all the developed cases with different vertical pressures representing different loads for the waste layer (1m, 2m, 10m, 15m, 20m). The main results are obtained in graphical form and represent the Maximum tensions Von Mises and total displacements of the geomembrane.

Subsurface treatment of a contact subjected to a hertz pressure

Abstract The study proposes an approach allowing the favorable modification of the stresses field of a structure subjected to a Hertzian contact. It is based on the study of a classic Hertzian contact in the presence of subsurface circular defects. The idea is to limit the field of tangential stresses without large increasing of the global stress (Von Mises) of the system. The location of the defects is made according to the mechanical parameters of the contact (Fn, has, z). Applied Mathematics versus Fluid Dynamics

This paper investigates scientific, institutional, and political conflict and collaboration between two different disciplines in the first part of the 20th century: applied mathematics and fluid dynamics. It argues for the catalytic role of Richard von Mises (1883–1953) in this process and analyzes the reasons for von Mises’s considerable fame in the former and limited posthumous reputation in the latter field. In this paper, a new simulation technique which can include microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites is proposed to accurately study deformation pattern and damage mechanism in these composites. Three dimensional microstructures constructed from XCT images incorporated into finite element modeling codes with minimal approximation to capture the effects of cluster size, local volume fraction of particles in the cluster and the distance between clusters as relevant statistical quantities describing the microstructural inhomogeneity of particulate reinforced composites. Reliable computation and local mesh adaptivity in limit analysis

The contribution is devoted to computations of the limit load for a perfectly plastic model with the von Mises yield criterion. The limit factor of a prescribed load is defined by a specific variational problem, the so-called limit analysis problem. This problem is solved in terms of deformation fields by a penalization, the finite element and the semismooth Newton methods. From the numerical solution, we derive a guaranteed upper bound of the limit factor. To achieve more accurate results, a local mesh adaptivity is used. peerReviewed
