Binge eating and psychostimulant addiction.
2021
Many of the various factors, characteristics, and variables involved in the addictive process can determine an individual's vulnerability to develop drug addiction. Hedonic eating, based on pleasure rather than energy needs, modulates the same reward circuits, as do drugs of abuse. According to the last report of the World Health Organization, the worldwide obesity rate has more than doubled since 1980, reaching especially critical levels in children and young people, who are overexposed to high-fat, high-sugar, energy-dense foods. Over the past few decades, there has been an increase in the number of studies focused on how eating disorders can lead to the development of drug addiction and …
Behavioral Traits Associated With Resilience to the Effects of Repeated Social Defeat on Cocaine-Induced Conditioned Place Preference in Mice
2020
The relationship between stress and drug use is well demonstrated. Stress-induced by repeated social defeat (RSD) enhances the conditioned place preference (CPP) induced by cocaine in mice. The phenomenon of resilience understood as the ability of subjects to overcome the negative effects of stress is the focus of increasing interest. Our aim is to characterize the behavior of resilient animals with respect to the effects of RSD on the CPP induced by cocaine. To this end, 25 male C57BL/6 mice were exposed to stress by RSD during late adolescence, while other 15 male mice did not undergo stress (controls). On the 2 days following the last defeat, all the animals carried out the elevated plus…
Recommendations of the Geriatric Cardiology Section of the Spanish Society of Cardiology for the Assessment of Frailty in Elderly Patients With Heart…
2018
Frailty is an age-associated clinical syndrome characterized by a decrease in physiological reserve in situations of stress, constituting a state of vulnerability that involves a higher risk of adverse events. Its prevalence in Spain is high, especially in elderly individuals with comorbidity and chronic diseases. In cardiovascular disease, frailty is associated worse clinical outcomes and higher morbidity and mortality in all scenarios, in both acute and chronic settings, and could consequently influence diagnosis and treatment. However, frailty is often not addressed or included when planning the management of elderly patients with heart disease. In this article, we review the available s…
Hair cortisol predicts avoidance behavior and depressiveness after first-time and single-event trauma exposure in motor vehicle crash victims
2020
The role of cortisol as a premorbid vulnerability factor for trauma sequelae remains unclear. Furthermore, the onset of long-term endocrine changes in response to first-time trauma as a function of later psychopathology is not clarified yet. Thus the predictive value of pre- and post-traumatic hair cortisol concentrations (HCCs) for psychological trauma sequelae was investigated in response to motor vehicle crash (MVC). A total of
Coffee and Anxiety
2015
Abstract This chapter discusses the effects of coffee consumption on anxiety response, taking into account vulnerability factors such as sex and genetics. In light of research concerning the effects of coffee on normal anxiety, and particularly research carried out in our laboratory, current knowledge can be summarized as follows: (1) men appear to be more sensitive to the effects of coffee than women; and (2) coffee can increase alertness in habitual consumers after acute deprivation, but not above the level of that observed in nonconsumers. In addition, we discuss clinical evidence of the varying sensitivity of anxiety disorder patients to the effects of coffee. The caffeine challenge tes…

AIRWAY MANAGEMENT IN TRAUMA PATIENTS
1999
Complications related to airway management in traumatized patients are common and, because of the importance and vulnerability of the ventilatory system, can be life threatening within a very short time. 25,39,48 Therefore, airway management is perhaps the most vital component in the treatment of traumatized patients. Patients who have suffered major trauma can present the most complex airway management problems, especially in the prehospital setting. 19 Because the treatment is time-critical, the evaluation of injuries is usually incomplete at the time airway management is undertaken. If the airway is injured, attempts to secure the airway by performing endotracheal intubation or insertion…
Validation of the Walking Behavior Questionnaire (WBQ): A tool for measuring risky and safe walking under a behavioral perspective
2020
Abstract Introduction Although daily walking implies several potential benefits for the health and well-being of people, and, besides the raise of more “walkable” cities, it is currently being promoted as an active transportation means that is rich in benefits for its users, road risks affecting pedestrians, together with their high vulnerability to suffer severe injuries as a consequence of traffic crashes, have turned into a relevant concern for both policymakers and public health practitioners. In this regard, risky and positive (proactively safe) behaviors have acquired a substantial relevance for the study and prevention of traffic causalities involving different road users, including …
Deception and abuse: Manifold Instances of Proxemic Violence against Sub-Saharan and Eastern-European Women-Immigrants In Sicily
2019
Over the past few decades and up until 2017, Sicily has hosted increasing numbers of African fugitives (ANCI et al., 2017) as well as migrants from Eastern Europe, especially after the entry of Romania into the European Union. The aim of the research was to analyse some of the role positions found in gender dynamics among migrants, throwing light on possible processes by which mechanisms of submission to and normalisation of gender based violence seem to have been internalised by these victims of proximity violence, emphasising the viscous links existing between vulnerability, resistance and resilience. Within this markedly multicultural context in Sicily, the researchers carried out a two-…
Socio-Demographic Vulnerability of Youth
2008
For a kind of inertia effect, the Italian welfare state protects today the old age too intensely while little the new risks associated with other phases of life course. Young Italians seem to suffer the actual changes: “youth remain longer in parental home and postpone the creation of its own independent life to most advanced age”. To understand the vulnerability situation increasingly widespreading among young people, it seems more and more necessary the depth analysis of the reasons and the subjective status of this discomfort that occur through a delay in transition to adulthood. In particular we study the self-perceived vulnerability situation of young Italians in the labor market (both…
