Newly Digitized Database Reveals the Lives and Families of Forced Migrants from Finnish Karelia

Studies on displaced persons often suffer from a lack of data on the long-term effects of forced migration. A register created during 1960s and published as a book series ‘Siirtokarjalaisten tie’ in 1970 documented the lives of individuals who fled the southern Karelian district of Finland after its first and second occupation by the Soviet Union in 1940 and 1944. To realize the potential value of these data for scientific research, we have recently scanned the register using optical character recognition (OCR) software, and developed proprietary computer code to extract these data. ‘Where the F… is Vuotso?’ : heritage of Second World War forced movement and destruction in a Sámi reindeer herding community in Finnish Lapland

In this paper we discuss the heritage of the WWII evacuation and the so-called ‘burning of Lapland’ within a Sámi reindeer herding community, and assess how these wartime experiences have moulded, and continue to mould, the ways people memorialise and engage with the WWII material remains. Our focus is on the village of Vuotso, which is home to the southernmost Sámi community in Finland. The Nazi German troops established a large military base there in 1941, and the Germans and the villagers lived as close neighbours for several years. Traces of the past: an interview study with Finnish war children who did not return to Finland after the Second World War

ABSTRACTThis paper is an in-depth qualitative study based on interviews with 10 Finnish children who were evacuated to Sweden during Second World War and who did not return to Finland after the war. The interviewees were asked to tell about their lives. Nine of them were between 2 and 5 years and one was 7 years old at the time of evacuation. The aim was to study how their childhood experiences were reflected in adult memories, how they remembered or did not remember. This paper focuses on the consequences of not knowing about one’s early life and also on whether it is possible to observe signs of the Finnish mother. Tässä tutkielmassa tarkastelun kohteena on Rauhan mielisairaalan evakuoiminen ja sen vaikutukset sijoitussairaaloihin toisen maailmansodan aikana. Rauhan mielisairaala sijaitsi Joutsenossa, Kaakkois-Suomessa. Vaikka Joutseno ei ollut varsinaisella sotatoimialueella eikä alue joutunut alueluovutusten kohteeksi, sairaala evakuoitiin kuitenkin kolme kertaa. Tavoitteena on tutkia evakuointeihin vaikuttaneita syitä, evakuointien käytännön toteutusta sekä piirimielisairaaloiden toimintaa sota-aikana, koska Rauhan sairaala oli piirimielisairaala ja potilaiden sijoitussairaalat olivat myös hoidollisesti samantasoisia sairaaloita.
