This doctoral dissertation investigates the imagery of Sáminess in contemporary Sámi poetry. The research material of the study consists of poetry collections published in North Sámi and Norwegian by eight Sámi authors: Inger-Mari Aikio (previously Aikio-Arianaick), Inga Ravna Eira, Rawdna Carita Eira, Irene Larsen, Rauni Magga Lukkari, Hege Siri, Nils- Aslak Valkeapää, and Ellen Marie Vars. The emphasis is on poetry published at the turn of the 2010s. The study examines how Sáminess has been depicted and constructed in poetry from the 1980s onwards. The aim of the study is to examine the Saami book history in the context of Finland in order to understand its evolution from 1820 to 1920. The study focuses on books and other printed materials in Saami language(s) (or idioms) and it looks into archival documents to throw light on their intellectual history. The Saami book history has unfolded slowly, and occasionally, it has appeared to fall into decline. The present study follows the French school of book history that uses multidisciplinary methods to examine books as a reflection of ideology in the context of a given culture at a given time. Suomessa asuu tällä hetkellä eri arvioiden mukaan 90--130 kirjailijaa, joiden äidinkieli on jokin muu kuin suomi, ruotsi tai saame. Artikkeli luo kuvaa siitä, keitä nämä kirjailijat ovat ja millaisista lähtökohdista he työtään tekevät. Heistä puhutaan usein kuin kyse olisi yhtenäisestä joukosta; artikkeli nostaa esiin esimerkkikirjailijoita kolmesta erilaisesta kirjailijatyypistä, jotka muodostavat omat marginaalin marginaalinsa. Se kuvaa myös niitä haasteita, joita äidinkieleltään muut kuin valtakieliset kirjailijat kohtaavat pyrkiessään suomalaiselle kirjallisuuden kentälle.
