Low-carbon transitions in industrialised societies will have significant social, economic and environmental impacts, raising concerns of justice. Calls for urgent transitions evoke a question about the roles of different actors in advancing transitions and ensuring they are just. This paper explores climate change adaptation within national policy priorities in a least developed country (LDC). The premise of the article is that when considering food security, climate is an exogenous trigger, while the deeper causes lie in social problems. Therefore, adaptation is subordinate to poverty alleviation. The paper examines how these two goals, climate adaptation and poverty alleviation, can be combined. Tutkielmassa tarkastellaan köyhyydestä pois pääsemistä. Tarkemmin selvitetään sitä, mikä mahdollistaa köyhyydestä pois pääsemisen ja mitä köyhyydestä selvinneet ihmiset kirjoittavat elämästään köyhyyden jälkeen. Suomalaisessa yhteiskunnassa tuloerot ovat olleet kasvussa 1990-luvulta lähtien, jolloin hyvin pärjäävien ohella myös köyhyysloukussa elävien määrä lisääntyy jatkuvasti. Köyhyydessä eläminen usein vähentää ihmisen hyvinvointia, heikentää voimavaroja ja tätä kautta kaventaa hänen toimintamahdollisuuksiaan. A critical analysis of the 'cooperative' strategy to poverty reduction : a case study of cooperatives in Lagos, Nigeria

The aim of this thesis is to critically examine whether cooperatives can be effective at poverty reduction, in response to the renewed call for a cooperative strategy to poverty reduction. The thesis studied cooperatives as a social organization and examined the interrelationships between the cooperatives and the members, the factors that hold both together to promote and deter the success of the cooperatives, the motivation for members’ participation and their expectations from the cooperatives.
