Fermentation of municipal primary sludge: effect of SRT and solids concentration on volatile fatty acid production

Laboratory bench-scale experiments were conducted to investigate the performance of primary sludge fermentation for volatile fatty acids production. Primary sludges from two major wastewater treatment plants located in Valencia (Pinedo and Carraixet) were used. Experiments were performed at solids retention times between 4 and 10 days, and total volatile solids concentrations between 0.6% and 2.8%. Operation at two temperatures (20 degrees C and 30 degrees C) was also checked. Results indicated the importance of feed sludge characteristics on volatile fatty acids yields, being approximately double for the Carraixet wastewater treatment plant sludge than for the Pinedo plant. The use of pharmaceuticals has increased enormously over the last few decades and serious concerns about their environmental fate and effects have arisen. Thus far, there is little knowledge about the historical pollution of the environment by pharmaceuticals. In the present study, sediment columns from three lake sites adjacent to wastewater treatment plants were collected, further divided in 2- or 2.5-cm slices, and analyzed for 15 pharmaceuticals by liquid chromatography-tandem mass spectrometry. This chapter analyses how Finnish male truck drivers (re)produce themselves as respectable male workers in the face of the recent economic, technological and institutional transformations impacting the European haulage sector. The investigation is based on ethnographic data which are produced by riding along on assignments with ten male Finnish truck drivers in the period 2012–2016. The analysis shows how truck drivers’ independence and value in the work process has become challenged and how truckers experience being occupationally stigmatized. To corroborate the responses in whitefish (Coregonus Iavaretus L.) exposed to elemental chlorine free (ECF) bleached-kraft pulp mill effluent (BKME) in situ, a 30-d laboratory exposure was carried out at concentrations simulating the field conditions. The flow-through exposures were conducted at four secondary (activated sludge) treated effluent (STE) concentrations: 1.3, 2.3, 3.5, and 7%. To evaluate the role of the secondary treatment, fish were also exposed to one concentration (3.5%) of pretreated effluent (PTE) from the mill. The executive gave marching orders to engineers to come up with a new technology that would enable VW to lower emissions of the new cars. The engineers failed to come up with a device that could do the job. Instead they deployed a defeating software would defeat the testing process. The 2009 VW Jetta clean diesel was launched in April 2008 and followed by the introduction of similarly equipped VW Golfs and Audi A3s. Over 145,000 vehicles were sold in the U.S. in three years. Kampanja on peräisin vuodelta 2016 ja sen taustana on vuoden 2015 päästöskandaali, jonka vuoksi Volkswagenin maine laski hurjasti. Pelastaakseen maineensa, Volkswagen-konserni aloitti suuren mainoskampanjan, jossa huomion keskipisteenä ensimmäistä kertaa Volkswagenin mainoshistoriassa on ihminen, eikä auto.
