Reproducibility, validity and responsiveness of the 200-metre fast walk test in patients undergoing cardiac rehabilitation

2011

Objective: To investigate the reliability, validity and responsiveness of the 200-metre fast walk test in patients with coronary artery disease engaged in a cardiac rehabilitation programme. Design: Descriptive study. Setting: Tertiary care hospital. Subjects: Thirty stable patients with coronary artery disease (51.9 ± 8.7 years), referred to the cardiac rehabilitation department after an acute coronary syndrome. Intervention: Not applicable. Main measures: Six-minute walk test distance, time to perform the 200-m fast walk test, peak power output of the graded maximal exercise test, before and after the programme; SF-36 quality of life questionnaire at baseline. Walk tests were performed tw…

Prognostic Value of the 6-Min Walk Test After Open-Heart Valve Surgery: EXPERIENCE OF A CARDIOVASCULAR REHABILITATION PROGRAM

2018

PURPOSE: This single-center retrospective analysis aimed to evaluate the prognostic relevance of 6-min walk test (6MWT) in patients admitted to an in-hospital cardiovascular rehabilitation program after open-heart valve surgery. METHODS: One hundred one patients able to perform a 6MWT within the first week of admission (time after surgery: 16 ± 8 d) were included (age 68 ± 11 y; 55% female; median left ventricular ejection fraction 55% [interquartile range: 50-60]; 51% after aortic valve surgery). Study endpoints were cardiovascular death and the combined outcome of cardiovascular death/cardiac hospitalization. Univariate and multivariate analyses were performed to analyze predictive value …

Dynamic hyperinflation during the 6-min walk test in severely asthmatic subjects

2018

We tested the hypothesis that dynamic hyperinflation develops in severe asthmatic subjects during exercise. Changes in inspiratory capacity (IC) were measured during the 6-min walk test (6MWT) in severe asthmatic subjects compared with chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD) subjects with a similar degree of bronchial obstruction. We assessed whether changes in IC were associated with changes in dyspnoea perception. 27 severe asthmatic subjects (10 males and 17 females) and 43 COPD subjects (35 males and eight females) were recruited. The two groups performed similarly in the 6MWT (p=0.90). At the end of the test, the Borg score increased significantly in both groups (mean difference: …

Do Women and Men over 70 Years Old Similarly Benefit from a One-Year Training Program?

2010

Background and Aims : Exercise capacity declines with age and is improved with exercise training. The aim of this study was to characterize the effects of a one-year combined exercise training in subjects over 70 years old, and to examine the eventual differences obtained between men and women. Methods : After baseline evaluation, 24 subjects (12 men and 12 women) over 70 years old underwent moderate intensity training with aerobic and resistance exercises, 3 hours a week over one year. Workload, oxygen uptake (VO2) and heart rate were measured during a symptom-limited exercise test. The distance walked in 6 minutes (6-MWT) was also registered, and the maximal strength was measured on knee …

Associations between muscle strength, spirometric pulmonary function and mobility in healthy older adults

2014

Background: Pathological obstruction in lungs leads to severe decreases in muscle strength and mobility in patients suffering from chronic obstructive pulmonary disease. The purpose of this study was to investigate the interdependency between muscle strength, spirometric pulmonary functions and mobility outcomes in healthy older men and women, where skeletal muscle and pulmonary function decline without interference of overt disease. Methods: 135 69 to 81‐yr‐old participants were recruited into the cross‐sectional study, which was performed as a part of European study MyoAge. Full, partial and no mediation models were constructed to assess the interdependency between muscle strength (handgr…

The Added Value of Remote Technology in Cardiac Rehabilitation on Physical Function, Anthropometrics, and Quality of Life: Cluster Randomized Control…

2023

Background Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) cause most deaths globally and can reduce quality of life (QoL) of rehabilitees with cardiac disease. The risk factors of CVDs are physical inactivity and increased BMI. With physical activity, it is possible to prevent CVDs, improve QoL, and help maintain a healthy body mass. Current literature shows the possibilities of digitalization and advanced technology in supporting independent self-rehabilitation. However, the interpretation of the results is complicated owing to the studies’ high heterogeneity. In addition, the added value of this technology has not been studied well, especially in cardiac rehabilitation. Objective We aimed to examine the…
