Comparison of histological and computed tomographic measurements of pig lung bronchi.

2020

Aim Light microscopy is used as template in the evaluation and further development of medical imaging methods. Tissue shrinkage caused by histological processing is known to influence lung tissue dimensions. In diagnosis of COPD, computed tomography (CT) is widely used for automated airway measurement. The aim of this study was to compare histological and computed tomographic measurements of pig lung bronchi. Methods Airway measurements of pig lungs were performed after freezing under controlled inflation pressure in a liquid nitrogen bath. The wall thickness of seven bronchi was measured via Micro-CT and CT using the integral-based method (IBM) and the full-width-at-half-maximum method (FW…

Publisher Correction: X-Ray Nanotomography of Individual Pulp Fibre Bonds Reveals the Effect of Wall Thickness on Contact Area

2020

Fibre bonds play an essential role in various properties of paper. Much research has focused on their strength, but the determination of the actual contact area also provides a challenge. Many of the research methods rely on optical tools, which are restricted by the wavelength of light that is utilised. Novel X-ray computed tomography devices utilise X-rays in studying the inner structure of materials, and surpass the optical methods in terms of resolution, allowing detection of even smaller details and variations in distance between the fibres in the bond intersection area. X-ray nanotomography was used to image 26 individual cellulose fibre bonds made of springwood and summerwood fibres …

Poly-left-lactic acid tubular scaffolds via diffusion induced phase separation: Control of morphology

2013

n this work, tubular poly-left-lactic acid scaffolds for vascular tissue engineering applications were produced by an innovative two-step method. The scaffolds were obtained by performing a dip-coating around a nylon fiber, followed by a diffusion induced phase separation process. Morphological analysis revealed that the internal lumen of the as-obtained scaffold is equal to the diameter of the fiber utilized; the internal surface is homogeneous with micropores 1–2 μm large. Moreover, a porous open structure was detected across the thickness of the walls of the scaffold. An accurate analysis of the preparation process revealed that it is possible to tune up the morphology of the scaffold (w…

A 10-Year Cone Beam Computerized Tomography Observation of the Buccal Bony Wall of an Immediately Placed Implant at the Anterior Maxilla: A Case Repo…

2017

Since the introduction of immediate implant placements, the buccal bony wall has been a major consideration for success due to its correlation with soft tissue contour and color. This report presents the stability of the buccal wall thickness of an immediately placed implant at the anterior maxilla over 10 years. Although the width of the buccal wall decreased at the 2-year post-op follow-up, it remained stable afterward according to cone beam computerized tomography (CBCT) scans. Hence, this report suggests that ensuring adequate bony wall thickness with bone augmentation and fixture position may promise the longevity of the buccal bony wall and surrounding soft tissue in an immediate impl…

LATE-BREAKING ABSTRACT: Comparative studies on bronchuswall-thickness by histologic and computed tomographic measurements of porcine lungs

2015

Aims: Histologic slides are commonly used as template in the evaluation and development of medical imaging methods.Diseases like Asthma and COPD show characteristic changes in airway morphology and airway measurement by computed tomography is a promising diagnostic approach. However, shrinkage caused by fixation and histological processing is known in lung tissue. In this study, the thickness of bronchus walls in paraffin and frozen sections as well as in CT and MicroCT were compared. Methods: Airway measurements of swine lungs were performed after freezing in ventilated condition in liquid nitrogen by measuring the wall thickness of 7 bronchi via CT and MicroCT as well as in frozen and paraffi…
