New method of grain-boundary extraction by directional optimal filtering: application to estimating creep in metals

2002

It is economically important for manufacturers of high- temperature machines to be able to measure creep so they can predict residual service life more accurately. This paper describes and refines an image analysis method for evaluating creep in laboratory test pieces. It is a preliminary study of how to extract relevant information for creep mea- surement by counting cavities. Sample preparation for quantification by image analysis is an important step determining the further development of the image analysis technique. Grain-boundary extraction, which in- volves directional information, is the major problem to be solved before measurement can be automated. The search for a crest-line extr…

Evaluation und interne Qualitätssicherung in der Allgemein- und Abdominalchirurgie

1997

The measuring of perioperative risk, the finding of intraoperative influences and the objective rating of quality of treatment were achieved by our program of quality assurance. With our system it is possible to measure differences between several surgeons and also differences in comparison to national and international results. Through optimised therapy the program can lead to an improvement of quality.

CCD characterization and measurements automation

2012

Abstract Modern mosaic cameras have grown both in size and in number of sensors. The required volume of sensor testing and characterization has grown accordingly. For camera projects as large as the LSST, test automation becomes a necessity. A CCD testing and characterization laboratory was built and is in operation for the LSST project. Characterization of LSST study contract sensors has been performed. The characterization process and its automation are discussed, and results are presented. Our system automatically acquires images, populates a database with metadata information, and runs express analysis. This approach is illustrated on 55 Fe data analysis. 55 Fe data are used to measure …

Change Discovery in Heterogeneous Data Sources of a Data Warehouse

2020

Data warehouses have been used to analyze data stored in relational databases for several decades. However, over time, data that are employed in the decision-making process have become so enormous and heterogeneous that traditional data warehousing solutions have become unusable. Therefore, new big data technologies have emerged to deal with large volumes of data. The problem of structural evolution of integrated heterogeneous data sources has become extremely topical due to dynamic and diverse nature of big data. In this paper, we propose an approach to change discovery in data sources of a data warehouse utilized to analyze big data. Our solution incorporates an architecture that allows t…

Estimating Verdoorn law for Italian firms and regions

2011

In empirical regional economics, returns to scale are typically estimated at the regional level in search for evidence on alternative theories of growth and agglomeration. However, returns to scale may also have a firm-level dimension. In this paper, we exploit micro level data and estimate the dynamic Verdoorn law in a multilevel-setting, where returns to scale are obtained simultaneously for the micro and the regional level. Using Italian firm-level data and the NUTS-3 level of aggregation, we estimate the classic and augmented versions of Verdoorn law for the manufacturing sector, and the rest of the economy for comparison. Our results show that increasing returns to scale co-exist at bo…

Determining the indicators of social capital theory to social network sites

2014

The authors theoretical research provided a framework to define and measure social capital in social network sites. This paper determining with a qualitative method the theoretical dimensions of this framework. The result of this paper is the explanation of social capital theory in social network sites under the consideration of the identified indicators. The sample for this case is students, and the research needs further confirmation by other samples and methods. But this paper gives a first interesting insight in social network sites explained with the social capital theory and provides a first guidance for further research projects.

A statistical calibration model for Affymetrix probe level data

2009

Gene expression microarrays allow a researcher to measure the simultaneous response of thousands of genes to external conditions. Affymetrix GeneChip{ $Ⓡ$} expression array technology has become a standard tool in medical research. Anyway, a preprocessing step is usually necessary in order to obtain a gene expression measure. Aim of this paper is to propose a calibration method to estimate the nominal concentration based on a nonlinear mixed model. This method is an enhancement of a method proposed in Mineo et al. (2006). The relationship between raw intensities and concentration is obtained by using the Langmuir isotherm theory.

Integrated Tool for Assisted Predictive Analytics

2021

Organizations use predictive analysis in CRM (customer relationship management) applications for marketing campaigns, sales, and customer services, in manufacturing to predict the location and rate of machine failures, in financial services to forecast financial market trends, predict the impact of new policies, laws and regulations on businesses and markets, etc. Predictive analytics is a business process which consists of collecting the data, developing accurate predictive model and making the analytics available to the business users through a data visualization application. The reliability of a business process can be increased by modeling the process and formally verifying its correctn…

Distributed evolutionary approach to data clustering and modeling

2014

In this article we describe a framework (DEGA-Gen) for the application of distributed genetic algorithms for detection of communities in networks. The framework proposes efficient ways of encoding the network in the chromosomes, greatly optimizing the memory use and computations, resulting in a scalable framework. Different objective functions may be used for producing division of network into communities. The framework is implemented using open source implementation of MapReduce paradigm, Hadoop. We validate the framework by developing community detection algorithm, which uses modularity as measure of the division. Result of the algorithm is the network, partitioned into non-overlapping co…

Near Real-Time Data Warehousing with Multi-stage Trickle and Flip

2011

A data warehouse typically is a collection of historical data designed for decision support, so it is updated from the sources periodically, mostly on a daily basis. Today’s business however asks for fresher data. Real-time warehousing is one of the trends to accomplish this, but there are a number of challenges to move towards true real-time. This paper proposes ‘Multi-stage Trickle & flip’ methodology for data warehouse refreshment. It is based on the ‘Trickle & flip’ principle and extended in order to further insulate loading and querying activities, thus enabling both of them to be more efficient.
