Temporal and spatial fluctuations in moisture affect humus microfungal community structure in microcosms

The effects of temporal and spatial fluctuations in moisture on the microfungal community were studied in birch litter plus pine humus microcosms over 6 months. Two treatments were used: a uniform treatment in which moisture was maintained at the original moisture content throughout the profile over the course of the experiment; and a fluctuating moisture treatment in which the moisture content of the whole microcosm fluctuated weekly around the original moisture content. Abstract The accurate measurement of nitrous oxide (N 2 O) and dinitrogen (N 2 ) during the denitrification process in soils is a challenge which will help to estimate the contribution of soil N 2 O emissions to global warming. Ploidy levels in Citrus clementine affects leaf morphology, stomatal density and water content

The objective of the present study was to understand the relationship among leaf morphology, stomatal characteristics and water relations in triploids generated through anther culture and their counterpart diploid plant of C. clementina. Triploid plants possessed small and narrow leaves as compared to diploid plant as evident by less leaf length, leaf width and leaf area. By contrast, the leaf index was observed to be more in triploids than haploid ones. Flow cytometric analysis re-confirmed the ploidy levels of heterozygous plant Hd as diploid and the ploidy of Th1, Th2, Th3 and Th4 plants as triploids. Modeling of perched leachate zone formation in municipal solid waste landfills.

The paper presents a 1D mathematical model for the simulation of the percolation fluxes throughout a landfill for municipal solid waste (MSW). Specifically, the model was based on mass balance equations, that enable simulation of the formation of perched leachate zones in a landfill for MSW. The model considers the landfill divided in several layers evaluating the inflow to and outflow from each layer as well as the continuous moisture distribution. The production and consumption of N2O in soils mainly involve biotic processes: the anaerobic process of denitrification and the aerobic process of nitrification. The SMAP mission combined active-passive soil moisture product at 9 km and 3 km spatial resolutions

Abstract The NASA Soil Moisture Active Passive (SMAP) mission was launched on January 31st, 2015. The spacecraft was to provide high-resolution (3 km and 9 km) global soil moisture estimates at regular intervals by combining for the first time L-band radiometer and radar observations. On July 7th, 2015, a component of the SMAP radar failed and the radar ceased operation. Abstract The water content of as-received commercial magnesium stearate batches from animal and vegetable sources have been modified by ageing in humid air at room temperature or by vacuum treatment. The complete adsorption–desorption isotherms of nitrogen and krypton vapours by samples of these as received and modified materials have been measured at liquid nitrogen temperature after standardised vacuum degassing. Moisture dependence on mechanical properties of pine nuts from Pinus pinea L.

Abstract Mechanical properties of pine nut shell are very important in the cracking process. Before industrial cracking shell moisture is adjusted by water soaking in order to avoid the breaking up of the nuts. In this work the moisture dependence of the mechanical properties of pine nut shells were studied in order to improve the industrial cracking process. Relationship between nut size and moisture content was studied and no significant differences were found for shell dimensions at four different moisture levels, 9.79%, 16.71%, 20.98% and 25.05% (dry basis). Growth and physiological responses of young olive trees affected by Olive leaf yellowing associated virus

We studied the effect of Olive leaf yellowing associated virus (OLYaV) on biometric and physiological changes in olive. The trial was carried out on 32 two-yearold virus-free trees of 'Frantoio' grafted on virus-free olive seedlings and grown in 32-L pots. Half of the trees were inoculated with OLYaV in the fall of 2007. At 6, 18, and 24 months after inoculation, tree height, basal trunk diameter and total leaf number were determined, and leaf area tree-1 was estimated from a 50-leaf subsample.
