Decay modes of sigma and lambda hypernuclei

1990

Abstract A review is presented of the problem of Σ and Λ decay in nuclei. By means of handy, yet reliable approximations, an approach to Σ decay is developed which allows a clear insight into the different aspects of the problem. The role of nuclear polarization, due to the spin-isospin ΣN → ΛN interaction, in the reduction of the Σ widths is discussed. Many experimentally observable Σ hypernuclei are predicted by showing that their widths are narrower than the separation energies between levels. The mesonic and non-mesonic decays of Λ hypernuclei are analyzed. The non-mesonic width is fairly well reproduced by simplified models for the ΛN → NN weak transition, but quantities like the ratio…

Nonadiabatic spin-transfer torque of magnetic vortex structures in a permalloy square

2014

The stationary displacement of a magnetic vortex core in a permalloy square caused by an ultrahigh direct current has been measured utilizing scanning electron microscopy with polarization analysis. Data have been analyzed for three different generic states of the Landau structure and up to a current density of $3\ifmmode\times\else\texttimes\fi{}{10}^{11}\mathrm{A}/{\mathrm{m}}^{2}$. This procedure allows for separating the effects caused by the Oersted field, the nonadiabatic, and the adiabatic spin-transfer torque. In addition, the spin polarization of the driving current $P=(65\ifmmode\pm\else\textpm\fi{}4)%$ is independently determined from the spin drift velocity of ${v}_{j}=(4.79\ifm…

Transparent Boundary Condition for Oseen-Frank Model. Application for NLC Cells With Patterned Electrodes

2015

In the present work a novel application of Transparent Boundary Conditions (TBC) to nematic liquid crystal cells (NLCC) with planar alignment and a patterned electrode is studied. This device is attracting great interest since it allows soliton steering by optically and externally induced waveguides. We employ the continuum Oseen-Frank theory to find the tilt and twist angle distributions in the cell under the one-constant approximation. The electric field distribution takes into account the whole 2D permittivity tensor for the transverse coordinates. Standard finite difference time domain methods together with an iterative method is applied to find an approximate solution to our coupled pr…

Interaction between non-Bragg band gaps in 1D metamaterial photonic crystals

2009

We consider periodic multilayers combining ordinary positive index materials and dispersive metamaterials with negative index in some frequency range. These structures can exhibit photonic band gaps which, in contrast with the usual Bragg gaps, are not based on interference mechanisms. We focus on effects produced by the interaction between non-Bragg gaps of different nature: a) the zero averaged refractive index, b) the zero permeability and c) the zero permittivity gaps. Our analysis highlights the role played by the unavoidable dispersive character of metamaterials. We show that the degree of overlap between these bands can be varied by a proper selection of the constructive parameters, …

Coronal fuzziness modelled with pulse-heated multistranded loop systems

2010

Coronal active regions are observed to get fuzzier and fuzzier (i.e. more and more confused and uniform) in harder and harder energy bands or lines. We explain this evidence as due to the fine multi-temperature structure of coronal loops. To this end, we model bundles of loops made of thin strands, each heated by short and intense heat pulses. For simplicity, we assume that the heat pulses are all equal and triggered only once in each strand at a random time. The pulse intensity and cadence are selected so as to have steady active region loops ($\sim 3$ MK), on the average. We compute the evolution of the confined heated plasma with a hydrodynamic loop model. We then compute the emission al…

Photonic Nambu-Goldstone bosons

2017

We study numerically the spatial dynamics of light in periodic square lattices in the presence of a Kerr term, emphasizing the peculiarities stemming from the nonlinearity. We find that, under rather general circumstances, the phase pattern of the stable ground state depends on the character of the nonlinearity: the phase is spatially uniform if it is defocusing whereas in the focusing case, it presents a chess board pattern, with a difference of $\pi$ between neighboring sites. We show that the lowest lying perturbative excitations can be described as perturbations of the phase and that finite-sized structures can act as tunable metawaveguides for them. The tuning is made by varying the in…

Dissipation-induced coherent structures in Bose-Einstein condensates.

2008

We discuss how to engineer the phase and amplitude of a complex order parameter using localized dissipative perturbations. Our results are applied to generate and control various types of atomic nonlinear matter waves (solitons) by means of localized dissipative defects.

Soliton rains in a fiber laser: An experimental study

2010

Rains of solitons constitute a class of nonlinear dynamics of dissipative soliton ensembles that we briefly reported in Opt. Express 17, 11776 (2009) from a fiber laser experiment. The existence of a relatively intense noisy background together with several tens of soliton pulses aggregated in a condensed soliton phase constitutes a necessary condition for their appearance. New soliton pulses form spontaneously from the background fluctuations and drift until they reach the condensed soliton phase. We here relate in detail the experimental conditions under which soliton rains manifest and their key features, describe related dynamics observed in their vicinity, and propose an explanation fo…

Force-Time Characteristics and Running Velocity of Male Sprinters during the Acceleration Phase of Sprinting

1988

Abstract In an effort to investigate the force-time characteristics during the acceleration phase of the sprint start, eight male sprinters were used as subjects. Runs up to 3 m were analyzed from film, and force-time parameters were measured on a force platform. In a starting stance the reaction time of the group was .118 ± .016 s and the force production lasted .342 ± .022 s. The maximal resultant force at the moment of maximal horizontal force was 19.3 ± 2.2 N x kg1, and the direction of the force was 32 ± 7°. In the very last instant before leaving the blocks the velocity of the center of gravity was 3.46 ± .32 m x s−1. In the first contact after leaving the blocks there was a braking p…
