Habitat- and species-mediated short- and long-term distributional changes in waterbird abundance linked to variation in European winter weather

Aim: Many species are showing distribution shifts in response to environmental change. We explored (a) the effects of inter-annual variation in winter weather conditions on non-breeding distributional abundance of waterbirds exploiting different habitats (deep-water, shallow water, farmland) and (b) the long-term shift in the population centroid of these species and investigate its link to changes in weather conditions. A new tool for the assessment of severe anthropogenic eutrophication in small shallow water bodies

Abstract Unlike in deep stratified lakes, the assessment of eutrophication in shallow aquatic systems (i.e., wetlands, marshes, ponds) should be based on the interaction between water and sediment. The availability of P to primary producers is naturally higher in shallow systems, because the sediment plays an active part via adsorption, precipitation and release processes. Improving the analysis of biogeochemical patterns associated with internal waves in the strait of Gibraltar using remote sensing images

High Amplitude Internal Waves (HAIWs) are physical processes observed in the Strait of Gibraltar (the narrow channel between the Atlantic Ocean and the Mediterranean Sea). These internal waves are generated over the Camarinal Sill (western side of the strait) during the tidal outflow (toward the Atlantic Ocean) when critical hydraulic conditions are established. HAIWs remain over the sill for up to 4 h until the outflow slackens, being then released (mostly) towards the Mediterranean Sea. Phase-noise Impact on the Performance of mmWave-radars

The impact of phase noise in Frequency Modulated Continuous Wave (FMCW) millimeter-wave (mmWave) radars is investigated in this paper. A FMCW signal is transmitted from the radar, reflected off a moving object and processed at a receiver in the radar. The impact of random phase noise/jitter on the performance parameters of estimated distance, speed and angle of arrival of an object is studied. Our studies show that there exists a threshold at about fifteen percent of the period of the carrier frequency, over which errors substantially manifest in the estimations. Abstract This paper addresses the design of a parallel compensator and a stabilizing controller for the simplified crystal growth dynamics of the Czochralski (CZ) process, i.e., the process for the production of monocrystalline silicon ingots of uniform diameter. The diameter control of the produced ingots is achieved by a CCD camera measurement used to sense the radius of the boundary between the base of the growing crystal and the surrounding glowing meniscus — a raised melt surface connecting the crystal ingot with the flatter melt surface. An algebraic approach for human posture estimation in the sagittal plane using accelerometer noisy signal

International audience; Our aim is to develop an algebraic approach to estimate human posture in the sagittal plane using Inertial Measurement Unit (IMU) providing accelerations and angular velocities. To do it so, we address the issue of the estimation of the amplitude, frequency and phase of a biased and noisy sum of three sinusoidal waveform signals on a moving time horizon. Since the length of the time window is small, the estimation must be done within a fraction of the signal's period. The problem is solved via algebraic techniques (see [38] for the theoretical part concerning this problem). The efficiency of our approach is illustrated by computer simulations.

Algebraic parameter estimation of a biased sinusoidal waveform signal from noisy data

International audience; The amplitude, frequency and phase of a biased and noisy sum of two complex exponential sinusoidal signals are estimated via new algebraic techniques providing a robust estimation within a fraction of the signal period. The methods that are popular today do not seem able to achieve such performances. The efficiency of our approach is illustrated by several computer simulations.

The minimum mean cycle-canceling algorithm for linear programs

Abstract This paper presents the properties of the minimum mean cycle-canceling algorithm for solving linear programming models. Originally designed for solving network flow problems for which it runs in strongly polynomial time, most of its properties are preserved. This is at the price of adapting the fundamental decomposition theorem of a network flow solution together with various definitions: that of a cycle and the way to calculate its cost, the residual problem, and the improvement factor at the end of a phase. Mineral Profile of Children’s Fast Food Menu Samples

Abstract Children’s fast food menus, including hamburgers served with french fries, dessert, and a soft drink, were analyzed to obtain the mineral profile of trace elements. The developed analytical methodology involved sample digestion under pressure inside a microwave oven with a mixture of HNO3 and H2O2 and inductively coupled plasma-optical emission spectrometry.
