Spatiotemporal rotational dynamics of laser-driven molecules
2020
Molecular alignment and orientation by laser fields has attracted significant attention in recent years, mostly due to new capabilities to manipulate the molecular spatial arrangement. Molecules can now be efficiently prepared for ionization, structural imaging, orbital tomography, and more, enabling, for example, shooting of dynamic molecular movies. Furthermore, molecular alignment and orientation processes give rise to fundamental quantum and classical phenomena like quantum revivals, Anderson localization, and rotational echoes, just to mention a few. We review recent progress on the visualization, coherent control, and applications of the rich dynamics of molecular rotational wave pack…
Absolute kinematics of radio source components in the complete S5 polar cap sample
2007
We report on the first wide-field, high-precision astrometric analysis of the 13 extragalactic radio sources of the complete S5 polar cap sample at 15.4 GHz. We describe new algorithms developed to enable the use of differenced phase delays in wide-field astrometric observations and discuss the impact of using differenced phase delays on the precision of the wide-field astrometric analysis. From this global fit, we obtained estimates of the relative source positions with precisions ranging from 14 to 200 $\mu$as at 15.4 GHz, depending on the angular separation of the sources (from $\sim$1.6 to $\sim$20.8 degrees). These precisions are $\sim$10 times higher than the achievable precisions usi…
Coherent vector pi-pulse in optical amplifiers
2007
We obtain an exact vector solitary solution for the amplification of an optical pulse with a time width short compared with both population and polarization decay time. This dissipative soliton results from the balance between the gain from inverted resonant two-level atoms and the linear loss of the host material. We suppose that the excited state of the active centers is degenerate on the projection of the angular moment. Numerical simulations demonstrate the stability of these vector dissipative solitons in the presence of both linear birefringence and group velocity dispersion of the host material.
Polarization shaping for unidirectional rotational motion of molecules.
2015
Control of the orientation of the angular momentum of linear molecules is demonstrated by means of laser polarization shaping. For this purpose, we combine two orthogonally polarized and partially time-overlapped femtosecond laser pulses so as to produce a spinning linear polarization which in turn induces unidirectional rotation of N2 molecules. The evolution of the rotational response is probed by a third laser beam that can be either linearly or circularly polarized. The physical observable is the frequency shift imparted to the probe beam as a manifestation of the angular Doppler effect. Our experimental results are confirmed by theoretical computations, which allow one to gain a deep p…
Harmonic generation from nanorings driven by a two-color laser field
2014
We study the high harmonic generation and the polarization of the harmonics emitted by a nanoring driven by two laser fields of angular frequency ?1 and ?2, with ?2?=?2?1, and ?1 resonant between the ground and the first excited state. We show that by varying parameters, such as laser intensity, photon energy and the delay between the two laser pulses, we can control the number of harmonics and the polarization of the radiation. In particular we show that with this choice of two-laser photon frequency rate we obtain more harmonics with respect to other configurations. We also calculated the average absorbed energy and the average angular momentum acquired by the electron as a function of th…
Helicity dependence of the total inclusive cross section on the deuteron
2009
Abstract A measurement of the helicity dependence of the total inclusive photoabsorption cross section on the deuteron was carried out at MAMI (Mainz) in the energy range 200 E γ 800 MeV . The experiment used a 4 π detection system, a circularly polarized tagged photon beam and a frozen spin target which provided longitudinally polarized deuterons. These new results are a significant improvement on the existing data and allow a detailed comparison with state-of-the-art calculations.
Laser driven quantum rings: one byte logic gate implementation
2018
We study the effect of the carrier-envelope-phase (CEP) on the high harmonic generation (HHG) from a quantum ring driven by two short orthogonal lasers polarized along the x and y axes. In particular, by varying only the phase of the laser polarized along y it is possible to control the intensity of the emitted harmonics. In fact, we show that the system can efficiently emit harmonics if the laser polarized along y is small and that the cut-off of the spectra can be controlled by changing the phase or the intensity ratio between the two lasers. The wavelet analysis of the emitted harmonics and the time dependence of the angular momentum and of the energy acquired by the electron show that t…
Energy flow canalization of evanescent cylindrical-vector beams
2013
We analyzed ultra-confined vector beams with radial and azimuthal polarizations which are critically self-governed inside plasmonic metamaterials. We succeeded in the separation of polarization singularities in the fields at the nanoscale. The examined metamaterials are suitable for long-range transport of subwavelength Bessel beams without discernible blurring. These results open the door to develop integrated devices for applications such as the manipulation of polarization and angular momentum of surface-plasmon excitations.
High-order-harmonic generation in dimensionally reduced systems
2013
The time-dependent wave function of a nanoring driven by a laser field is obtained by exploiting the symmetries inherent to the system and used for studying the properties of the electromagnetic radiation emitted by the nanoring as a function of the polarization state of the laser. The diffused radiation has the characteristics of high-order-harmonic generation. For a noncircularly polarized laser field an extension of the expected cutoff position is evident, indicating that nanorings are efficient sources of radiation. The polarization state of the emitted harmonics can be opportunely controlled by varying the parameters of the pump field. The profile of the absorbed angular moment shows t…
Manipulation of Atoms and Molecules with Laser Radiation and External Fields
2006
The paper provides analysis of a process, when a laser radiation absorption of a specific polarization creates a specific spatial distribution of molecular bonds and angular momenta of small molecules. It is discussed how an external fields electric or magnetic can influence this distribution. Some practical examples involving optical polarization of molecules in magnetic and electric fields are presented.1
