Bloch wave theory of modulational polarization instabilities in birefringent optical fibers
1997
The modulational instability gain spectra, of an arbitrarily polarized intense pump wave that experiences periodic nonlinear polarization rotation in a birefringent optical fiber, are derived by Floquet analysis. The predictions of the linearized analysis are confirmed by numerical simulations of the coupled nonlinear Schr\"odinger equations.
Modulational instability processes in optical isotropic fibers under dual- frequency circular polarization pumping
2002
Experiments are presented showing that, under dual-frequency, circular polarization pumping, host modulational instability processes can be generated in a single-mode isotropic fiber by careful tuning of the frequency spacing between the pumps.
Generation of High-Repetition-Rate Dark Soliton Trains and Frequency Conversion in Optical Fibers
1998
Induced modurational polarization instability in birefringent fibers leads to trains of dark soliton-like pulses. Optimal large-signal cw and soliton frequency conversion is also analysed.
Polarization properties of a fiber optic loop mirror
2021
Abstract In this work, we present the spectral polarization properties of a fiber optic loop mirror (FOLM) which includes a 50/50 coupler and 25-cm long highly birefringent (hi-bi) fiber. The modulation depth of the reflection/transmission spectra can be adjusted by twisting the hi-bi fiber at the splices by means of two azimuth rotators (AR). The results show that the polarization properties of the reflection strongly depends on the angle rotation. We found that it is possible to obtain reflection spectral polarization independence for any modulation depth with the proper parameters. The experimental behavior was confirmed by numerical simulations based on the Jones matrix formulation.
Bistable phase locking of a nonlinear optical cavity via rocking: Transmuting vortices into phase patterns.
2006
We report experimental observation of the conversion of a phase-invariant nonlinear system into a phase-locked one via the mechanism of rocking [G. J. de Valcarcel and K. Staliunas, Phys. Rev. E 67, 026604 (2003)]. This conversion results in that vortices of the phase-invariant system are being replaced by phase patterns such as domain walls. The experiment is carried out on a photorefractive oscillator in two-wave mixing configuration.A model for the experimental device is given that reproduces the observed behavior.
Phase-bistable Kerr cavity solitons and patterns
2013
We study pattern formation in a passive nonlinear optical cavity on the basis of the classic Lugiato-Lefever model with a periodically modulated injection. When the injection amplitude sign alternates, e.g., following a sinusoidal modulation in time or in space, a phase-bistable response emerges, which is at the root of the spatial pattern formation in the system. An asymptotic description is given in terms of a damped nonlinear Schr\"odinger equation with parametric amplification, which allows gaining insight into the basic spatiotemporal dynamics of the system. One- and two-dimensional phase-bistable spatial patterns, such as bright and dark-ring cavity solitons and labyrinths, are demons…
Bistable phase locking of a laser via monochromatic signal injection
2009
In free running lasers the field phase is not fixed and any value possible value is equally likely (invariant), but can be locked to an external reference by injecting a monochromatic signal field into the cavity. In this way the phase of the slave laser locks to a single value resulting in a monostable phase locking. It could be however of practical interest that the laser field be locked not to a single value but to two different possible values, hence the name bistable phase locking.
Bistable phase locking in a low fresnel number nondegenerate optical oscillator with injected signal
2011
Degenerate four-wave mixing oscillators are phase-bistable cavities. In such systems, above the oscillation threshold, two equivalent states, of equal intensities but opposite phases are generated. This phase bistability extends over the whole range of stable emission, unlike the intensity bistability (in, e.g. a saturable absorber cavity) that exits in a limited range of injection. When the cavity Fresnel number is large different patches of the beam transverse section can have different phases and a pattern forms. Basic patterns here are phase fronts (or domain walls), which are 1D structures separating regions with opposite phase that manifest as dark lines (as the phase jumps by p acros…
Bistable phase locking in rocked lasers
2006
Abstract We investigate analytically and numerically the dynamics of single mode lasers with periodic ac injection (rocked lasers). Such lasers show phase bistability as the phase of the light emitted by such lasers can lock to either of two values shifted by π. Locking regimes for different lasers are studied showing that the system response is strongly modified in class B lasers due to the influence of relaxation oscillations.
Properties of the δ Scorpii Circumstellar Disk from Continuum Modeling
2006
We present optical $WBVR$ and infrared $JHKL$ photometric observations of the Be binary system $\delta$ Sco, obtained in 2000--2005, mid-infrared (10 and $18 \mu$m) photometry and optical ($\lambda\lambda$ 3200--10500 \AA) spectropolarimetry obtained in 2001. Our optical photometry confirms the results of much more frequent visual monitoring of $\delta$ Sco. In 2005, we detected a significant decrease in the object's brightness, both in optical and near-infrared brightness, which is associated with a continuous rise in the hydrogen line strenghts. We discuss possible causes for this phenomenon, which is difficult to explain in view of current models of Be star disks. The 2001 spectral energ…
