Total Thyroidectomy Performed With the Starion Vessel Sealing System Versus the Conventional Technique: A Prospective Randomized Trial

2010

Meticulous dissection and accurate hemostasis are required in thyroid surgery. The authors recently performed a number of thyroidectomies using a new device that combines heat and pressure for sealing and cutting tissue. A prospective randomized trial was conducted on 98 patients subjected to total thyroidectomy for benign disease: 49 patients (group A) with the Starion tissue welding system and 49 (group B) with the clamp-and-tie technique. The 2 groups were comparable in mean age, gender, thyroidal volume (20-60 mL), incision length (<35 mm), and pathology. The authors evaluated operative time, postoperative serum calcemia, dosage and length of postoperative calcium and vitamin D trea…

ELECTROCHEMICAL ANALYSIS ON FRICTION STIR WELDED AND LASER WELDED 6XXX ALUMINIUM ALLOYS T-JOINTS

2007

Friction Stir Welding (FSW) and Laser Welding (LW) can be successfully employed to weld aluminium alloys, in many cases overcoming the difficulties encountered with more conventional welding processes like MIG or TIG. The corrosion resistance of the welded joint remains, however, an important issue, especially in applications (like in aircrafts), where corrosion can induce structural failure: the weld region has often lower mechanical resistance in comparison with the parent material and a decrease in its corrosion resistance, especially when the corrosion damage can represent a potential crack initiation site, can be unacceptable in components design. In this work the corrosion resistance …

On the coupling dynamics between thermally stressed beams and granular chains

2015

The in-situ measurement of thermal stress in slender beams, or long continuous welded rails, may prevent structural anomalies. With this aim, we investigated the coupling dynamics between a beam and the highly nonlinear solitary waves propagating along a straight granular chain in contact with the beam. We hypothesized that these waves can be used to measure the stress of thermally loaded structures, or to infer the neutral temperature, i.e., the temperature at which this stress is null. We studied numerically and experimentally the mechanical interaction of one and two straight chains of spherical particles in contact with a prismatic beam that is subjected to heat. The results show that c…

Defect characterization in Al welded joints by non-contact Lamb wave technique

2006

Abstract The use of air-coupled sensors to detect flaws in Al welded joints and the advantage of Lamb wave for their characterization has been proved. Ultrasonic waves were generated by a pulsed laser and by contact angle-beam transducer, and received by an air-coupled capacitive transducer. Laser-based configuration was used to quickly locate the defect, whereas the angle-beam contact probe configuration to characterize it thanks to the dispersive behavior of Lamb waves. Guided waves allow inspection of the complete thickness with only one scan, permitting to detect and to size both internal and surface defects; their high flexibility in the measurement is due to the various parameters cha…

Effect of Chemical Etching on Adhesively Bonded Aluminum AA6082

2007

The efforts of new automotive industry are mainly directed towards the substitution of aluminum for steel in the body structure because the aluminum structures are lighter than traditional steel ones and meet the requirements, in terms of both vehicle design and manufacture. However, this substitution is not so automatic, but it is important to study the material properties and the structure design, focusing the attention on the methods of joining. Welding, typical technique to joint steel parts, is particularly difficult when applied on aluminum ones and then, in many cases, the adhesive bonding is preferred. To optimise the joint performances it is necessary to pre-treat the metal surface…

Study of magnesium and aluminum alloys absorption coefficient during Nd:YAG laser interaction

2007

International audience; In laser processes, the absorption factor of laser Nd:YAG by metals plays a very important role. In order to model laser welding, we need to know its evolution during the process. The theoretical calculation does not enable the prediction of the absorption factor in the case of a keyhole mode. It is difficult to predict the effect of plasma and recoil pressure on the shape of the keyhole. In this paper, an integrating sphere is used to determine the absorption factor during the laser process, which is carried out on two types of magnesium alloys (WE43 and RZ5) and an aluminum alloy. We obtain the evolution in time of the absorption factor according to different steps…

Intentional weld defect process: From manufacturing by robotic welding machine to inspection using TFM phased array

2019

Specimens with intentionally embedded weld defects or flaws can be employed for training, ‎development and research into ‎procedures for mechanical property evaluation and ‎structural integrity assessment. It is critical that the artificial defects are ‎a realistic ‎representation of the flaws produced by welding. Cylindrical holes, which are usually ‎machined after welding, ‎are not realistic enough for our purposes as it is known that they ‎are easier to detect than the naturally occurring ‎imperfections and cracks. Furthermore, it is ‎usually impractical to machine a defect in a location similar to where the real ‎weld defects ‎are found. For example, electro-discharge machining can prod…

The modeling of dissimilar welding of immiscible materials by using a phase field method

2013

A multiphysical model of high power beam welding of immiscible materials is developed to explain the influence of operational parameters and materials properties on resulting morphology by simultaneous solving of heat transfer, fluid flow and mass transfer problems. The introduction of phase field description of the interface motion between two immiscible liquids allows obtaining the cartography of melted zone in function of two key-parameters: the position of heat source relatively to joint line and the welding speed. Due to the short thermal cycle limiting mass transfer, high power beam welding techniques may result in very inhomogeneous melted zones. In this study, the interest is paid t…
