2014

The international human rights treaties recognize the right to life, but most of them do not determine if the unborn is within its scope and what the degree of protection. Given this lack of specificity, the interpretation and application of this fundamental right by its supervisory bodies is particularly important. The analysis of existing case law about it - mainly from Europe - will enable us to contribute to the definition of subjective and objective scope of the protection of the unborn.

Politics of Humanitarianism: The Ahmadiyya and the Provision of Social Welfare

2020

Ahmadi Muslims have combined local contributions and financial support from overseas to support various development projects since the 1920s when they started their mission activities in West Africa. The chapter outlines contemporary social welfare activities of the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community in Ghana and Burkina Faso. Humanitarian aid provided by the Ahmadiyya Muslim Community and its NGO Humanity First is one of the issues favouring public recognition as well as interreligious dialogue to which the Ahmadis are equally strongly committed. A different pattern of risk factors for atopic and non-atopic wheezing in 9-12-year-old children

2005

Few epidemiological studies have compared the risk factors of asthma or wheezing between atopic and non-atopic children. The objective of this study was to determine if there are specific risk factors for current wheezing related to atopic status in schoolchildren. Schoolchildren 9-12 yr of age from three Spanish cities (n = 2720) were subject to a cross-sectional study of asthma risk factors (by questionnaire) and atopy (by skin prick test) according to the ISAAC phase-II protocol. Risk factors for current wheezing (in the last 12 months) as reported by parents were investigated among the atopic (positive prick test to at least one allergen) and the non-atopic (negative prick test) childre…

2021

In conjunction with the dismantling of psychiatric hospitals, social workers have been commissioned to help service users in their daily living in their homes and in the community. The consequences of these changes for experience-based knowledge and practices in their contexts remain relatively unknown. In this study, eighteen service users and the social workers they described as helpful for them were interviewed. The interviews were recorded, transcribed, and analyzed using Thematic Analysis. The following themes emerged: “Here, there and everywhere”, “Doing, being, becoming”, “Talking” and “Order, planning and improvisation” concerning the contradictions service users and professionals m…

From this perspective on competitiveness has been given great attention in the literature and competitiveness hindrances have been studied as well. However the link between inequality and competitiveness is less studied, particular in case of the European Union. Thereby the author attempts to clarify the role of the between-country income inequality in hindering the competitiveness. The data analysis shows that lower income countries have less ability towards strengthening the nation economy competitiveness thereby reducing overall European Union competitiveness level. Obviously the country's compe…
