Cyberbullying a modern form of bullying: Let's talk about this health and social problem

2018

Abstract Cyberbullying or electronic aggression has already been designated as a serious public health threat. Cyberbullying should also be considered as a cause for new onset psychological symptoms, somatic symptoms of unclear etiology or a drop in academic performance. Pediatricians should be trained to play a major role in caring for and supporting the social and developmental well-being of children.

Diurnal blood pressure curve in children and adolescents

1996

Objective To investigate the diurnal blood pressure curve in healthy normotensive children. Thirty-one children were re-examined after a median interval of 123 days in order to study the reproducibility of the diurnal profile. Subjects Twenty-four-hour ambulatory blood pressure monitoring and conventional blood pressure readings were obtained in 228 normotensive children, whose ages ranged from 6 to 16 years and of whom 116 were boys and 112 girls. Results The conventional blood pressure averaged 99+/-11/57+/-9 mmHg in boys and 98+/-12/56+/-9 mmHg in girls (means+/-SD); the corresponding 24 h pressures were 111+/-7/66+/-5 mmHg and 109+/-7/65+/-5 mmHg, respectively. Of the children, 83% had …

Legal and assistance aspects of Alzheimer's disease: analysis of 100 cases.

2003

Caring for patients with disabling cognitive diseases, such as Alzheimer's disease (AD) and other progressive dementias, has a number of legal and social welfare implications. The two main problems to be discussed with patients and caregivers are the need for a legal guardian and requests for government financial support, both of which depend on the patient's progressive loss of autonomy and increasing need for assistance. In order to study the presence of these two support measures, we considered 100 AD patients (56 women and 44 men) divided in four groups on the basis of the stage of the disease: mild (25), moderate (34) and severe (32), or death (9). We investigated the number of caregiv…

Competitividad Del Sector Manufacturero En Ammrica Latina Tendencias Y Determinants (Competitiveness of the Manufacturing Sector in Latin America Tre…

2014

Rail access charges and internal competition in high speed trains

2016

Abstract This paper develops an ex ante analysis of the introduction of on-track competition in High Speed Rail (HSR) lines. The distinctive elements of our analysis are the consideration of: (i) the vertical structure of the rail sector, (ii) operators that compete in prices and number of services, and (iii) access charges for the use of the rail infrastructure that are endogenous. We provide simulation results for three Spanish HSR routes. The socio-economic viability of entry is found to depend on whether infrastructure and rail operations are integrated or separated, and also on the policy rule to set rail access charges. Firstly, separation without entry is not an appropriate good poli…

Demand for and Pricing of Mobile Internet: Evidence from a Real-World Pricing Experiment

2006

Commercialization of innovations frequently stumbles. A prominent recent example are the early (i.e. pre3G)mobile phone-enabled Internet services, whose European takeup was slower than expected. To determine why, we build a structural model of demand for such services and estimate it using consumerlevel panel data from a real world pricing experiment. The experiment allows for a decomposition of the number of wireless connections into the number of needs instances where a consumer would establish a connection if the price were zero and the conditional probability of establishing a connection. We find that needs were plenty and potential consumer surplus several magnitudes higher than that a…

Supply and Use of Human Capital in the Spanish Regions

2009

Besides enrichment at personal level entailed by the increase in the cognitive and intellectual levels of the person associated with education, a large number of studies have verified the greater the human capital of a person, the greater is his employability, his participation in the labour market, his functional and geographical mobility and, thereby, his productivity. This results in higher wages and less likelihood of unemployment for individuals with more schooling. From the social point of view, the accumulation of resources associated to higher educational attainment levels permits societies to make sustained progress towards higher levels of welfare. It makes possible to adapt to gl…

Minding the Gaps : The Role of Finnish Civil Society Organizations in the Labour Market Integration of Migrants

2021

AbstractThe growing role of civil society organizations (CSOs) in welfare service provision is sometimes portrayed as a threat to welfare state universalism in Nordic societies. In Finland, CSOs co-produce integration services alongside comprehensive official integration programmes, compensating for gaps and shortcomings in those services. We identify three “gaps”, which are (1) limited availability of services in terms of time and target group, (2) lack of direct labour market contacts and (3) limited flexibility to serve individual needs. We assess how CSOs target these gaps with their service offerings through qualitative interviews with policy implementers, CSO workers and migrants. How…

Impact of care responsibilities on women’s employment: a comparison between European and East Asian welfare states

2017

ABSTRACTWomen with care responsibilities tend to reduce their labour market activity and to work part time, even if there are cross-national differences. Empirical research often analyses this separately for childcare and elderly care, and studies are usually limited to Western societies. This article aims to explore to what extent women’s care responsibilities for children and older people impact on women’s labour market integration and how this impact differs in the context of different welfare states in Europe and Asia. The analysis is based on data from a new comparative survey for four cities (Jyvaskyla, Hamburg, Bologna and Hsinchu) in four countries (Finland, Germany, Italy and Taiwa…

Legal Issues Affecting Labour Market Integration of Migrants in Finland

2021

AbstractFinland has only relatively recently become a country of immigration, and as a result most immigration and integration policy legislation is also relatively recent. Since the 1990s, the number of migrants to Finland has increased steadily, motivating the adoption of various policy measures to regulate migration and support integration. From the perspective of migrant labour market integration, the two most important legislative acts are the Aliens Act (FINLEX 301/2004) and the Act on the Promotion of Immigrant Integration (FINLEX 1386/2010), which lay out basic labour market integration supports for migrants, and determine who can work in Finland and on which grounds. Finland’s comp…
