A design framework and principles for co-designing learning environments fostering learning and wellbeing
2018
Increased understanding of the complex synergetic influences of psychosocial and physical learning environments (LEs) on learning and wellbeing has drawn attention to their careful design. Contemporary learner-centred educational paradigms emphasise the importance of learner involvement in the LE design. A gap exists, however, between the theoretical discourses of LE design and their application into educational practice. Furthermore, a lack of shared conceptual understanding among studies conducted in different cultural and disciplinary contexts undermines the comparability, generalisability, and build-up of a coherent body of knowledge on the LE design. This educational design research re…
The effects of combining kangaroo care and parental singing on premature infants' and parents' wellbeing and development of parent-infant relationship
2014
After experiencing premature birth, fragile infants have to spend weeks and even months on the ward because of their medical needs. This can be stressful both for parents and infants and increase the risk of early interaction problems and difficulty in bonding. In this qualitative study I was interested to find out what kinds of experiences parents had with parental singing during kangaroo care. I was also interested in examining the nursing staff’s attitudes, observations and thoughts about using music on the ward. I conducted my study within a Kangaroo Families study on the L2 ward at Jorvi hospital, Espoo. My study consists of interviews from 4 mothers that participated in the Kangaroo F…
Uupumisesta hyvinvointiin : työuupuneiden ryhmäpsykoterapeuttinen kuntoutusmalli BALANSSI
2018
The aim of this thesis was to study the salutogenic effects of BALANSSI, a novel group psychotherapy rehabilitation modality, on employees suffering from severe burnout symptoms. The intervention was implemented on 16 separate days over a nine-month period with one follow-up day six months thereafter. 62 subjects were randomly assigned to eight intervention groups (four analytic and four psychodrama). An additional 32 subjects were selected as controls. The theoretical foundation was the self-determination theory, which postulates the importance of striking a balance between the three innate psychological needs of autonomy, relatedness and competence. Changes in sense of coherence and psych…
Factors Constraining Teachers’ Wellbeing and Agency in a Finnish University : Lessons from the COVID-19 Pandemic
2022
The COVID-19 pandemic forced teachers to undergo a sudden shift toward technology-enhanced teaching and learning, challenging their capacities for change in many ways. This study explores those factors constraining teachers’ wellbeing and agency that influenced their capacities as teachers in a Finnish university during the first year of the pandemic. Two sets of data were collected, with an online survey in the spring (n = 297) and autumn (n = 246) of 2020. At both times, challenges with workload, time management, and interactions with colleagues were found to be the most constraining factors. Difficulties with work–life balance and home office facilities seemed more of an issue in the spr…
BUSINESS ECOSYSTEM UNDER CONSTRUCTION
2012
In recent years, we have seen the rise in interest on new service concepts that would take the advantage of capabilities of ecosystems instead that of single companies. In this paper we describe the initial steps on a new business initiative and how the ecosystem starts developing around the core. We use action research approach in one case of building joint service, sports receipt, for health exercise and wellbeing markets. The research paper concludes with an ecosystem mode peerReviewed
Ecosystem Under Construction: An Action Research Study on Entrepreneurship in a Business Ecosystem
2012
In recent years, we have seen increasing interest in new service concepts that take advantage of the capabilities of business ecosystems instead of single companies. In this article, we describe how a business ecosystem begins to develop around a service business idea proposed by an entrepreneur. We aim to recognize the different domains of players that are or should be involved in the ecosystem while it is under construction. The article concludes with an ecosystem model consisting of six sub-ecosystems having different change drivers and clockspeeds. All great things are based on a series of small things, and all the small things need hard work.
Informal learning and wellbeing outcomes of gameplay and their associations with gameplay motivation
2023
Educational functions of digital games are often seen only in the light of the serious and purposeful activities that aim for learning outcomes, in contrast with noneducational games that are designed for entertainment. The focus of this paper is in studying players’ learning outcomes from playing non-educational games, and how these relate to wellbeing outcomes of playing, and gaming motivation. The data for this study was collected via a survey (N = 1,202) in the United Kingdom and the United States. The survey respondents answered the question regarding what players perceive they have learnt by playing digital games. A generic datadriven qualitative content analysis of the responses to t…

Access-Awareness-Agency (AAA) Model of Music-Based Social-Emotional Competence (MuSEC)
2019
Social–emotional competence (SEC) is a set of psychological resources, highly relevant for adaptive growth and wellbeing. Music has been argued to support social–emotional skills, yet there is little theoretical consensus about the underlying impact mechanisms and the special nature of music as a medium for SEC. This article presents a theoretical model of music-based SEC that combines research from general SEC models with music-specific literature from music psychology, music education, music therapy, and music for health and wellbeing. The proposed access-awareness-agency (AAA) model defines music-based social–emotional competence (MuSEC) as interplay of embodied access, reflective awaren…
