Measurement of brain tissue pressure in cold induced cerebral oedema.

Experiments were performed in order to evaluate the concept that brain oedema is associated with an increase in local interstitial fluid pressure. Assuming that the pressure measured by the cotton wick technique represents the hydrostatic interstitial fluid pressure, the tissue pressure was recorded with pressure transducers in the white matter adjacent and remote to a local cold injury, in the opposite hemisphere, and in the cisterna magna. In 9 cats during steady-state conditions mean tissue pressures between 1.20±0.30 mm Hg and 2.33±0.80 mm Hg were found, as compared to a mean CSF pressure of 5.17±0.82 mm Hg. The pattern of expression of GFAP immunoreactivity in astrocytes of the juvenile rhesus monkey cortex was examined following infection with simian immunodeficiency virus (SIV). Blocks of cerebral cortex plus subjacent white matter from saline- and formalin-perfused brain were examined by peroxidase-linked immunochemical and immunofluorescence staining of deparaffinized sections. Strong GFAP immunoreactivity was found in astrocytic cells in both uninfected and SIV-infected juvenile macaque in the subpial cerebral cortex and in subcortical white matter, where GFAP-positive cells were abundant. Multiple sclerosis patients examined with perfusion magnetic resonance (MR) imaging techniques have been found to have patterns of abnormal blood flow. These include prolonged mean transit time, a trend toward decreased cerebral blood flow in the area of plaques, and decreased cerebral blood flow and prolonged mean transit time within normal-appearing white matter. The mechanisms responsible for the dynamics of cold-induced edema, its spread and resolution, were examined. The findings indicate that bulk flow and not diffusion should be considered as the main mechanism for the edema spreading through the extracellular spaces of the white matter.
A current source density analysis of field potentials evoked in slices of visual cortex

The method of one-dimensional current source density (CSD) analysis was applied to field potentials recorded from 350 microns thick slices of the primary visual cortex of rats and cats. Field potentials were elicited by stimulation of the white matter and recorded along trajectories perpendicular to the cortical layers at spatial intervals of 25 to 50 microns. The resulting CSD distributions resembled closely those recorded from the cat visual cortex "in vivo".
