Genotyping Reveals High Clonal Diversity and Widespread Genotypes of Candida Causing Candidemia at Distant Geographical Areas
2020
The objectives of this study were to gain further insight on Candida genotype distribution and percentage of clustered isolates between hospitals and to identify potential clusters involving different hospitals and cities. We aim to genotype Candida spp. isolates causing candidemia in patients admitted to 16 hospitals in Spain, Italy, Denmark, and Brazil. Eight hundred and eighty-four isolates (Candida albicans, n = 534; C. parapsilosis, n = 282; and C. tropicalis, n = 68) were genotyped using species-specific microsatellite markers. CDC3, EF3, HIS3, CAI, CAIII, and CAVI were used for C. albicans, Ctrm1, Ctrm10, Ctrm12, Ctrm21, Ctrm24, and Ctrm28 for C. tropicalis, and CP1, CP4a, CP6, and B…
THE INNER TERRITORIES: FROM THE MARGINS TO COSMOPOLITAN CENTRES
2021
The article proposes a reflection on the cosmopolitanism linked to the “marginalised” parts of Italy, where social, economic, and infrastructural decline and the consequent abandonment of places are met with stories of renewal in which the relationship between inhabitants and foreigners constitutes the basis for starting local development processes able to activate new urban networks based on cultural interaction and to generate resilient relations, welcoming processes, and new communities. In this new “cosmopolitan nomadism”, we can recognise an opportunity for territories and communities to regenerate spatial and social relations: innovation and culture, permanent exchange, and neutral en…
Bisphenol-A impairs insulin action and up-regulates inflammatory pathways in human subcutaneous adipocytes and 3T3-L1 cells.
2013
Current evidence indicates that chemical pollutants may interfere with the homeostatic control of nutrient metabolism, thereby contributing to the increased prevalence of metabolic disorders. Bisphenol-A (BPA) is a lipophilic compound contained in plastic which is considered a candidate for impairing energy and glucose metabolism. We have investigated the impact of low doses of BPA on adipocyte metabolic functions. Human adipocytes derived from subcutaneous adipose tissue and differentiated 3T3-L1 cells were incubated with BPA, in order to evaluate the effect on glucose utilization, insulin sensitivity and cytokine secretion. Treatment with 1 nM BPA significantly inhibited insulin-stimulate…
Widespread pain among 11-year-old Finnish twin pairs
2001
Objective To examine the prevalence of widespread musculoskeletal pain (WSP) symptoms in 11-year-old Finnish twins and to determine the relative role of genetic and environmental factors in the etiology of WSP. Methods Data on current pain items were collected from 1995 to 1998 from a national sample of Finnish families with 11-year-old twins born between 1984 and 1987. The presence of WSP was determined using a validated questionnaire method. Pairwise similarity was computed for 583 monozygotic (MZ) pairs, 588 same-sex dizygotic (DZ) pairs, and 618 opposite-sex DZ twin pairs. Variance components for genetic and environmental factors were estimated using biometric structural equation modeli…
Intermittent Low-Dose IFN Gamma Treatment for Metastatic Renal Cell Carcinoma: Analysis of Factors Predicting Clinical Response and Long-Term Survival
1995
Background: Objective tumor remissions are induced by a variety of immunomodulating agents in a minority of patients suffering from metastasizing renal cell carcinoma. The results of different clinical studies, however, varied greatly for each of these treatment modalities. In order to elucidate potential causes for this variability and to further study the long-term results of intermittent low-dose IFN gamma therapy in patients with advanced renal cell cancer (RCC) we retrospectively analyzed factors predicting clinical response and long-term survival of 121 patients. Material and Methods: We retrospectively analyzed the clinical results of 5 phase II studies treating 121 patients with int…
Do island plant populations really have lower genetic variation than mainland populations? Effects of selection and distribution range on genetic div…
2015
Ecological and evolutionary studies largely assume that island populations display low levels of neutral genetic variation. However, this notion has only been formally tested in a few cases involving plant taxa, and the confounding effect of selection on genetic diversity (GD) estimates based on putatively neutral markers has typically been overlooked. Here, we generated nuclear microsatellite and plastid DNA sequence data in Periploca laevigata, a plant taxon with an island–mainland distribution area, to (i) investigate whether selection affects GD estimates of populations across contrasting habitats; and (ii) test the long-standing idea that island populations have lower GD than their mai…
Widespread Pain Hypersensitivity and Lumbopelvic Impairments in Women Diagnosed with Endometriosis.
2021
Abstract Objective To explore hypersensitivity to pain and musculoskeletal impairments in the lumbopelvic area in women with and without endometriosis. Methods This cross-sectional study included 66 women (41 women with endometriosis and 25 healthy women). Pain and related catastrophizing thoughts were assessed through a numeric rating scale, pressure pain thresholds (PPTs), the slump test, and the Pain Catastrophizing Scale. Lumbopelvic muscles were evaluated through ultrasound imaging, flexor/extensor resistance tests, and the lumbopelvic stability test. Results Women with endometriosis showed increased self-reported intensity of current pelvic pain (CuPP), reduced local PPTs (42.8–64.7% …
The association between body mass index and fibromyalgia severity: data from a cross-sectional survey of 2339 patients
2021
Abstract Objective Various studies have shown that overweight and obesity are central features of FM, but the real impact of a high BMI on clinical severity in patients with FM is still controversial. The aim of this study was to analyse the relationships between BMI categories and measures of symptom severity and functional impairment using data from a Web-based registry of patients with FM. Methods Adult patients with an ACR 2010/2011 diagnosis of FM underwent a complete physical examination and laboratory tests and were asked to complete a package of questionnaires covering their sociodemographic and treatment details, in addition to the following disease-specific questionnaires: the rev…
La organización del trabajo por proyectos: La fábrica de la precariedad laboral
2019
The project-based organization, considered as a radical reorganization of work around one or more simultaneous projects, is nowadays widespread in large companies and public administrations. According to the managerial way of thinking, this system would be virtuous: by giving more autonomy to the employees in the act of production and by developing their skills through mobility and interdisciplinarity of work teams, it would be able to arouse their full commitment. This study confirms in some way how this opinion has been imposed, but at the expense of precarious working conditions, increasing the dedication of employees and silencing any form of criticism. The research is based on a review…
