Amphibians of the Kayan Mentarang National Park (East Kalimantan, Indonesia): estimating overall and local species richness

On the basis of surveys since 1997 and an intensive survey at the World Wildlife Fund field station at Lalut Birai in 2001, we assessed the importance of the Kayan Mentarang National Park in East Kalimantan for the conservation of Borneo's amphibian fauna. Sixty-five frog species and one Caecilian species are currently known to occur in this region. We report their occurrence in 16 subareas. Most of the species were recorded at Upper Bahau (41) and at the Lalut Birai field station (33). Based on the results of opportunistic searches and transect censuses at Lalut Birai, we argue that the amphibian diversity of the national park is still greatly underestimated.

Diversity of ankA and msp4 genes of Anaplasma phagocytophilum in Slovenia.

Granulocytic anaplasmosis is a tick transmitted emerging disease in Europe and worldwide. The agent, Anaplasma phagocytophilum is transmitted by ticks of the genus Ixodes and causes infections in humans and domestic animals. The analysis of different target genes showed that in nature several genetic variants of A. phagocytophilum were present. The purpose of our study was to genetically characterize A. phagocytophilum strains from eight humans, 16 dogs, 12 wild boars, one bear and 18 tick pools from Slovenia. Background The identification of temporal thresholds or shifts in animal movement informs ecologists of changes in an animal’s behaviour, which contributes to an understanding of species’ responses in different environments. In African savannas, rainfall, temperature and primary productivity influence the movements of large herbivores and drive changes at different scales. Glycoprotein molecules in the walls of Schizosaccharomyces pombe wild-type cells and a morphologically altered mutant resistant to papulacandin B

SUMMARY: Schizosaccharomyces pombe cell walls contain two major glycoprotein species, I and II, with molecular masses of 2 x 106 and 5 x 105 Da respectively, as determined by gel filtration chromatography and PAGE. The ratio of sugar to protein is higher in species I than in species II. Much of the sugar in both glycoproteins (about 85% in wild-type cells) is O-linked to the peptide moiety. The morphological sph1 mutant is resistant to papulacandin B, and its cell wall contains less glycoprotein II (but not less glycoprotein I) than the parental wild-type strain, although glycoprotein II is still synthesized and released into the growth medium. p38α and NF-κB regulate antioxidant defense in the liver through an age-dependent mechanism

p38α MAPK is a sensor of oxidative stress. The aim of this work was to assess the role of p38α in the regulation of the antioxidant defense in the liver with aging. Livers ofyoung and old wild type (WT) and p38α liver-specific knock out (KO) mice were used to determine glutathione redox status by mass spectrometry; malondialdehyde (MDA) levels by HPLC; mRNA expression of glutamate cysteine ligase (Gclc), Sod1, Sod2 and catalase by RT-PCR and nuclear levels of NF-κB subunit p65 by western-blotting. In the excavated Padure (Beltes) hill-fort in Latvia, cultural layers from the Late Bronze Age and the Early Iron Age (Stage 1), and the Middle Iron Age and the Late Iron Age (Stage 2), were detected, which, besides the archaeological material typical of that period, provided abundant zooarchaeological material. This article presents the investigation data from the zooarchaeological material of both stages: the data relate to the butchering techniques used, and the identification of the composition of the faunal species. Background Cervical cancer is caused primarily by human papillomaviruses (HPV). The polymorphism rs1042522 at codon 72 of the TP53 tumour-suppressor gene has been investigated as a genetic cofactor. More than 80 studies were done between 1998 and 2006, after it was initially reported that women who are homozygous for the arginine allele had a risk for cervical cancer seven times higher than women who were heterozygous for the allele.
