A new list and prioritization of wild plants of socioeconomic interest in Italy: toward a conservation strategy

Wild harvested plants (WHP) and crop wild relatives (CWR), part of the segment of natural diversity that is collectively known as ‘Plant Genetic Resources’, have great socioeconomic importance for humans because they are used either directly or in crop breeding. In order to lay down a solid base for constructing conservation strategies for Italy, an updated annotated list of CWR and WHP was produced for the country including information on known uses. Taxa included in the list were then prioritized using a pragmatic approach based on their value, native status, and need of protection or monitoring.

Unpacking the Black Box of Wilderness Therapy

Despite considerable progress within wilderness and adventure therapy research over the last decade, researchers are still unable to precisely answer why, how, and for whom this treatment modality works. There is also a need for more knowledge regarding the circumstances under which the treatment does not appear to be effective. In this realist synthesis, we attempt to unpack this “black box” of wilderness therapy more specifically, defined as a specialized approach to mental health treatment for adolescents. Abstract Bacillus thuringiensis Cry toxins are widely used as biocontrol agents in bioinsecticides and transgenic plants. In the three domain-Cry toxins, domain II has been identified as an important determinant of their highly specific activity against insects. In this work, we assessed the role in membrane associated proteolysis and toxicity in Colorado potato beetle (CPB) of a previously reported ADAM recognition motif present in Cry3Aa toxin domain II. The pleiotropic cytokine interleukin-6 (IL-6) interacts with the specific ligand binding subunit (IL-6R alpha) of the IL-6 receptor, and this complex associates with the signal-transducing subunit gp130 (IL-6R beta). Human IL-6 acts on human and murine cells, whereas murine IL-6 is only active on murine cells. The construction of a set of chimeric human/murine IL-6 proteins has recently allowed us to define a region (residues 43-55) within the human IL-6 protein, which is important for the interaction with gp130. Aggregation of Cu/Zn superoxide dismutase (SOD1) is a hallmark of a subset of familial amyotrophic lateral sclerosis (ALS) cases. The expression of wild-type SOD1 [SOD(hWT)] surprisingly exacerbates the phenotype of mutant SOD1 in vivo. Here we studied whether SOD1(hWT) may affect mutant SOD1 aggregation by employing fluorescence microscopy techniques combined with lifetime-based Förster resonance energy transfer (FRET). Only a very minor fraction of SOD1(hWT) was observed in aggregates induced by mutant SOD1(G37R), SOD1(G85R) or SOD1(G93C). The amyloid β (Aβ) peptide, which is abundantly found in the brains of patients suffering from Alzheimer disease, is central in the pathogenesis of this disease. Therefore, to understand the processing of the amyloid precursor protein (APP) is of critical importance. Recently, we demonstrated that the metalloprotease meprin β cleaves APP and liberates soluble N-terminal APP (N-APP) fragments. In this work, we present evidence that meprin β can also process APP in a manner reminiscent of β-secretase. Therapy in the open air: Introducing wilderness therapy to adolescent mental health services in Scandinavia

Despite the rich traditions of outdoor life in the Scandinavian countries, structured nature-based therapeutic interventions remain underexplored in adolescent mental health services. We suggest that wilderness therapy is an age-appropriate and effective group treatment that may hold particular appeal for at-risk youth who are less responsive to conventional forms of treatment.
