Impact of information and in-home sensory exposure on liking and willingness to pay: The beginning of Fairtrade labeled coffee in France.

2015

This study was conducted to assess how the Fairtrade label interacts with the perception of intrinsic product characteristics on liking and purchase decisions and to estimate the evolution of this interaction after exposure to the coffees and/or exposure to ethical information. In a first session, 119 consumers gave liking scores for 2 regular and 2 Fairtrade coffees under a blind tasting condition. Then, they were asked to indicate the maximum price they would pay for each product in 2 auctions taking place under different information conditions. In the first auction, participants saw the packaging but did not taste the coffee; in the second auction, they could both taste the coffee and se…

La croyance dans le fumoir : “The Portrait of Mr. WH”, l’éthique de la croyance de William Kingdon Clifford et l’assentiment selon John Henry Newman

2023

Wilde’s story “The Portrait of Mr. W.H.” blurs literary genres, asserts the importance of the false and plays with reader expectations. It has generated a substantial exege- sis, perhaps lacking in interest in the multi-faceted debates on belief running through the 1870s-1880s. Wilde takes part in that debate through a text of uncertain status and complex editorial history, contrasting Newmanian assent with W.K. Clifford’s ethics of belief (1877), before asserting the supremacy of desire, thus ruining all assent and epistemically justified belief. To the demanding philosophical-religious theories of Clifford and Newman, Wilde responds with an ambiguous, subversive narrative, intended to com…

Immunogenic hotspots in the spacer domain of ADAMTS13 in immune‐mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura

2021

International audience; Background Immune-mediated thrombotic thrombocytopenic purpura (iTTP) is caused by anti-ADAMTS13 autoantibodies inducing a severe deficiency of ADAMTS13. Epitope mapping studies on samples obtained during acute iTTP episodes have shown that the iTTP immune response is polyclonal, with almost all patients having autoantibodies targeting the spacer domain of ADAMTS13.Objectives To identify the immunogenic hotspots in the spacer domain of ADAMTS13.Patients/methods A library of 11 full-length ADAMTS13 spacer hybrids was created in which amino acid regions of the spacer domain of ADAMTS13 were exchanged by the corresponding region of the spacer domain of ADAMTS1. Next, th…

b) the same par condicio creditorum principle and the consequent possibility of intervention of third party in the execution. It concludes however that a revolution like the aforesaid explained would be only apparently advantageouOld and new problems related to the intervention of creditors in the expropriation (marginal notes at Cass. Sez. Un. January 7 2014 n. 61) Moving from the decision of the Sezioni Unite n. 61/2014 the author takes the opportunity to re-examine old and new problems related to the intervention of creditors in the forceable execution. The first major theme concerns par condicio creditorum which is examined in its evolutionary history since the Code Napoleon through its period of maximum extension (the Code of 1940) until its reduction as a result of the reforms of 2005. The author examines the possibility to overcome quoad effectum the distinction between sine titulo et cum titulo interveners in light of jurisprudence’s evolution between 1978 2009 and 2014. The possibility in particular concerns those creditors sine titulo the where credit has not been contested (ex art. 499 c.p.c.) by the debtor seek payment and partecipate to distribution. In the last section the author examines the possibilities for other creditors to contest the intervention of the creditor sine titulo ex art. 499 c.p.c. (utendo iuribus in subrogation in case of inaction of the debtor) or in the distribution phase ex art. 512 c.p.c. He concludes that the only person that will be really damaged if he doesn’t contest - ex art. 499 c.p.c. - the credit it is precisely the debtor. He also notes that in the legislation of the last decade the apparent effort to reduce the numbers of judicial enquiry incidental to forceable execution will never be achieved unless it’s eliminated in radice: a) the existence in our system of extrajudicial enforcement titulaSettore IUS/15 - Diritto Processuale Civilesince it would lead to increase autonomous expropriations (one for each creditor who can today intervene) and to increment judicial enquiries in order to form enforceable judgments

Facilitators of and Barriers to Sustainable Development in Small and Medium-Sized Enterprises: A Descriptive Exploratory Study in Romania

2021

In the context of growing concerns regarding the deterioration of the environment and the increase in social inequalities, the concept of sustainability emerged as a response of companies, in order to contribute to community goodwill. The drivers and obstacles for the businesses engaging in sustainable policies have been explored at large by scientific literature. However, research gaps were observed, namely regarding SMEs, that tend to have a less formal and more fragmented approach to sustainability. The goal of our study is to determine the main barriers and facilitators for sustainability that Romanian SMEs face, and the connections between them and with the firms’ characteristics. Our …

The effect of an eco-label on the booking decisions of air passengers

2022

In the last few years there has been an increasing attempt to find solutions on how to mitigate the environmental impacts of air travel. Behavioral change has hereby been identified as the measure with the most significant impact. One way to encourage behavioral change is the use of eco-labels. Eco-labels have, to date, received scant attention in the aviation industry, and their effect on air travel behavior is still largely unknown. This study explores the effect of an eco-label on the booking decisions of passengers. We conduct a stated choice experiment with 553 air passengers. Our findings show that providing passengers with an eco-label leads to behavioral change, as the label makes t…

Female-female aggression and female mate choice on black grouse leks.

2000

We studied female-female aggression in relation to female mate choice in black grouse, Tetrao tetrix, in central Finland, in 1994-1998. Aggression occurred on average every other minute when there was more than one female on a territory, and aggressive behaviour was most prominent when several females attended the lek. Interactions tended to be proportionally most frequent on the territories of the highest-ranking males, although not significantly so. Females that were chased by other females did not mate with lower-ranking males than their aggressors did. Furthermore, chased females were only rarely (6% of cases) forced to move off the territory by agonistic interactions and copulations we…

Effect of Willow TitPoecile montanusalarm calls on attack rates by Pygmy OwlsGlaucidium passerinum

2013

One suggested anti-predator function of alarm calls is to deliver a message to a predator that it has been detected. Moreover, giving the alarm call could provide a signal to the predator that capturing the individual giving the alarm is more difficult than capturing its silent group members, as the caller is probably the most aware of the predator's location. In an aviary experiment using stuffed dummy Willow Tits Poecile montanus, we assessed whether an authentic alarm call given by Willow Tit affected Pygmy Owl Glaucidium passerinum prey preference. In the experiment, the Owls attacked only the ‘silent’ dummy individuals, suggesting that alarm calling could offer direct fitness benefits …

The effect of periodic bottlenecks on the competitive ability of Drosophila pseudoobscura lines.

1993

Competition experiments between several Drosophila pseudoobscura strains that were previously subjected to periodic bottlenecks of different sizes and D. willistoni have been carried out. Contrary to previous results with these two species, where stable coexistence was detected, populations of D. pseudoobscura displaced D. willistoni in a few generations. By using a relative fitness measure, the control lines (that had not gone through bottlenecks) outcompeted D. willistoni faster than bottlenecked lines. One of these, corresponding to the minimum possible bottleneck size of one pair, also shows significantly lower relative fitness than the other strains. These results are discussed in rela…
