Influence of raw data analysis for the use of neural networks for win farms productivity prediction
2011
In the last decade wind energy had a strong growth because of cost effectiveness of the technology and the high remunerative of investments.
Generalized feed-forward based method for wind energy prediction
2013
Abstract Even though a number of new mathematical functions have been proposed for modeling wind speed probability density distributions, still the Weibull function continues to be the most commonly used model in the literature. Therefore, the parameters of this function are still widely used to obtain typical wind probability density distributions for finding the wind energy potential by researchers, engineers and designers. Once long-term average of Weibull function’s parameters are known, then the probability density distributions can easily be obtained. Artificial neural network (ANN) can be used as alternative to analytical approach as ANN offers advantages such as no required knowledg…
Using semantics to facilitate data integration of offshore wind farms
2012
Operation and maintenance play an important role in extracting power from the wind, especially, in offshore wind energy where wind farms are located far off the shore and under harsh weather conditions. Improved operation and maintenance is likely to reduce costs as well as hazard exposure of the employees. Implementation of advanced information technology is thus crucial for operating offshore wind farms effectively and efficiently and hence improves operation and maintenance. However, information availability and reliability are key issues for their use in the offshore wind domain. In addition, the semantic of information has not been exploited thoroughly. This paper describes the develop…
Optimum Performance of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators Coupled to Wind Turbines
2007
In this paper a control algorithm for the efficiency improvement of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG) is presented. The proposed algorithm reduces the losses of the generator without affecting its performances. In details, after a description of a dynamic model of the PMSG, which has been purposely modified in order to take into account the iron losses, the basic equations and the constraints to obtain the loss minimization are presented and discussed. Some simulations of a specific PMSG employing the proposed algorithm are performed. The results of these simulations show that enhancement of the efficiency up to 3% can be reached in comparison to a PMSG using a traditional cont…
Active power maximizing for Wind Electrical Energy Generating Systems moved by a Modular Multiple Blade Fixed Pitch Wind Turbine
2008
This paper proposes a new solution for wind electrical energy generating system (WEEGS). The system here taken into account is moved by a modular multiple blade fixed pitch wind turbine (MMBFPWT) and foresees a new MPPT algorithm whose main characteristics are low cost, low noise, buildings simplicity and modularity. The mathematical model of the entire WEEGS has been here developed taking into account all the components starting from the wind turbine and ending with the electrical grid. The WEEGS mathematical model has been implemented in Matlab-Simulink in order to carry out the simulations needed to test the effectiveness of the proposed WEEGS. The simulations results show the effectiven…
Stationary battery systems in the main world markets: Part 1: Overview of the state-of-the-art
2017
The role of energy storage systems (ESSs) is becoming more and more important in modern power grids, mainly because of the higher penetration of intermittent renewable energy sources (RESs), such as solar and wind power, spurred by advantageous support policies carried out in several countries. The fluctuation nature of the energy produced by RESs is indeed leading to emerging power quality issues or to renewable curtailments. ESSs can be used to balance generation and demand of electricity over time, allowing a higher penetration of RESs into the power network. The energy storage industry is evolving rapidly, and new electrochemical technologies are entering the market. Besides, most elect…
Sliding-mode observer based sensor-less control of a small wind energy conversion system
2015
Small wind turbines are becoming an attractive solution for household applications. These micro generation units can be used as standalone applications or grid connected applications. However to get the full potential benefits of these wind turbines, systems should be low cost and reliable. Introducing the wind speed and rotor speed sensors at the generator shaft may reduce the reliability of small wind turbines. In this study, a grid connected sensor-less 5 kW small wind energy conversion system has been studied. The maximum power point tracking method of the wind turbine is totally independent from wind speed and rotor speed measurements. Optimum rotor speed and actual rotor speed are est…
Energy performances and life cycle assessment of an Italian wind farm
2008
Abstract Renewable energy sources are often presented as “ clean ”. A more correct definition is that they are “cleaner” than ones based on fossil fuel conversion. When the energy consumption and the environmental impacts related to the plant's life-cycle are considered, a more comprehensive assessment of these technologies can be carried out. This paper aims to evaluate the energy and the environmental performances of the electricity production of a wind farm. The impacts related to all the phases of the wind farm construction and operation have been compared to the environmental benefits due to the “green” electricity generation during its useful life. In other terms, the goal is to trace…
Techno-economic sizing of off-grid hybrid renewable energy system for rural electrification in Sri Lanka
2015
Abstract Off-grid hybrid renewable-energy-based power systems for rural electrification have become an attractive solution for areas where grid electricity is not feasible. Hybrid energy systems use several energy technologies, and the selection of proper technologies with optimum sizing of the selected components has become very important. The objective of this study has been to investigate the optimum configuration of a hybrid system that can supply electricity to a rural community in Sri Lanka. A rural village in Siyambalanduwa (Sri Lanka) comprising approximately 150 households with a resultant daily electricity demand of 270 kWh and a nighttime peak of 25 kW has been studied. This regi…
Wind Electrical energy generating systems EMC. A dedicated experimental simulator for tests
2008
In wind electrical energy generating systems, due to fast voltage and current fluctuations, the power converter represents a source of electromagnetic disturbances. EMI problems of stand alone wind generators are here analysed in order to take into account many different power quality problems which result in voltage fluctuations and harmonics in the net. This paper, moreover, presents a wind turbine experimental simulator (WTES) that moves a wind electrical energy generating system (WEEGS) to carry out EMI measurements and the relative experimental results. The WEEGS here taken into account comprises a wound rotor induction generator (WRIG) in which the frequency transformation from the ro…
