Assessment of the technical and economic potential of offshore wind energy via a GIS application: A case study for the Sicily Region according to Ita…
2015
This paper presents a technical and economic analysis of the possible exploitation of offshore wind resources using spatial analysis methods based on GIS tools. The study assessed the magnitude and distribution of the main constraints on installation of wind farms by taking into account the relevant technical factors and local laws on nature protection issues in a specific area, i.e., Sicily. Specific cost functions were defined for several components of the total cost of construction and maintenance of a wind farm. Several scenarios were implemented according to wind turbine size, hub height, total wind farm power, and distance from the coast, and the levelised production cost was assessed…
Sensorless small wind turbine with a sliding-mode observer for water heating applications
2015
Water heating applications consume a considerable portion of electricity demand in most of countries. Small wind turbines are one of attractive alternatives for grid electricity based water heating systems. Wind energy can be converted to heat energy in a high efficient manner. However it is essential that wind turbine based water heating systems should be economical and reliable. Maximum power point tracking algorithm of most of available wind turbines requires information from a wind speed sensor and a rotor speed sensor which reduces the reliability of the system. In this paper, the proposed 5 kW wind turbine does not require external wind speed sensors and rotor speed sensors. The syste…
Application of Monte Carlo technique to evaluate the power injectable on electrical grid by wind farms
2008
This paper is part of a research aimed at assessing the impact of wind generation on the transmission grid of Sicily, second among the Italian regions for wind power installed. To assess the maximum degree of wind generation penetrability in full compliance with the safe operation of the system, it seemed necessary to investigate the reports of contemporary winds and their territorial correlations when load assumes the peak or the minimum. Given the nature of the problem, it has been used a method of analysis based on the application of stochastic simulation techniques type Monte Carlo. In the paper, after describing the current state of wind energy generation in Sicily and development scen…
Wind turbine modeling using the bond graph
2011
Author's version of a chapter in the book: Proceedings of the IEEE International Symposium on Computer-Aided Control System Design. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1109/CACSD.2011.6044572 This paper addresses the problem of bond graph methodology as a graphical approach for modeling wind turbine systems. In this case, we consider the modeling of a wind turbine system with individual pitch control scheme and the interaction with tower motions. Two different bond graph models are presented, one complex and one simplified. Furthermore, the purpose of this paper is not to validate a specific wind turbine model, but rather show the difference between modeling with a cl…
A two-stage fault detection and classification for electric pitch drives in offshore wind farms using support vector machine
2017
This article presents a two-stage fault detection and classification scheme, for induction motor drives in wind turbine pitch systems. The presented approach is suitable for application in offshore wind farms. The adopted strategy utilizes three phase motor current sensing at the pitch drives for fault detection and only when a fault is detected at this stage, features extracted from the current signals are transmitted to a central support vector machine classifier. The proposed method is validated in a laboratory setup of the pitch drive.
Wind Turbines to Power Telecommunication Systems: A Case Study in Sicily
2011
The ever increasing problems related to air pollution and the difficulties for power lines to reach inaccessible areas are pushing to find new solutions for powering telecommunications equipments (TLC). The renewable energy sys- tems, although relatively expensive, have the required characteristics. The purpose of this work is to find a solution based on a low power wind turbine to serve a real telecommunication site located near Palermo, the main city of Sicily (Italy).
Pitch controller modeling for wind turbine power regulation using feed forward control strategies
2015
In this work, pitch controlled power regulation of a horizontal axis wind turbine coupled with a fixed speed asynchronous generator is studied using SimulationX®. Wind turbines need to be operated as per specified power output vs wind speed characteristics of it. If the wind speed is between the cut-in wind speed and the rated wind speed, then the wind turbine needs to be operated constant Cp. If wind speed is between the rated speed and the cut-off wind speed, then the wind turbine needs to be operated for constant rated power. To extract rated power above rated wind speed a proper controller strategy is required. This work provides a simulation model for power regulation of a horizontal a…
Computer Aided Optimization Via Simulation Tools of Energy Generation Systems With Universal Small Wind Turbines
2012
This paper considers the general issues in the project and the optimization of energy generation systems using small universal wind turbines, suitable in Distributed Generation (DG) and computer aided optimization for a better exploitation of wind source. Optimization in this field reveal to be more and more important because the local generation and consumption of electrical power, even for grid connected generators can suffers for unevenness of wind source exploitation, also in terms of wrong directions and in not regular wind flows. Computer aided design and optimization of small plants may give significant improvements in the development of the wind source also in accordance with the pr…
Efficiency Maximization of Permanent Magnet Synchronous Generators Coupled to Wind Turbines
2007
In this paper a control algorithm for the efficiency improvement of permanent magnet synchronous generators (PMSG), the relative simulations and their results are presented. The proposed algorithm reduces the losses of the generator without affecting its performances. In details, after a description of a dynamic model of the PMSG, which has been modified in order to take into account the iron losses, the basic methodologies to obtain the loss minimization are presented and discussed. Many simulations of a specific PMSG employing the proposed algorithm were carried out and are presented. The results of these simulations show that enhancement of the efficiency up to 3% and more can be reached…
Smart grid integrated green data centres as ancillary service providers
2015
In this paper a review of Green Data Centres facilities to support smart grids operation is proposed. The paper describes the ancillary services a Green Data Centre can provide both in terms of spinning reserve provision and different regulation services. In the application section, a real electrical grid hosting a data centre is considered. The infrastructure is owned by Engineering S.p.A. and is installed in northern Italy. The system has been considered as connected to the MV distribution grid in presence of other renewable energy sources. The impact of possible power management operations over the considered data centre has been studied by means of a simulation software and the spinning…
