Retinal image quality and visual stimuli processing by simulation of partial eye cataract

Visual stimuli were demonstrated on a 4.3’’ mobile phone screen inside a “Virtual Reality” adapter that allowed separation of the left and right eye visual fields. Contrast of the retina image thus can be controlled by the image on the phone screen and parallel to that at appropriate geometry by the AC voltage applied to scattering PDLC cell inside the adapter. Such optical pathway separation allows to demonstrate to both eyes spatially variant images, that after visual binocular fusion acquire their characteristic indications. COMPARISON OF EXPERIMENTS WITH WEIGHTED DISTRIBUTIONS

In this paper the standard statistical experiment in which a random sample is drawn from some distribution involving an unknown parameter θ is compared with experiments in which samples are obtained from different weighted versions of that distribution, so that the underlying probability of entering the sample is multiplied by some weight function. This comparison is carried out by means of the concepts of sufficiency and pairwise sufficiency as developed in Blackwell's theory of the comparison of statistical experiments. Many examples are presented which illustrate the wide variety of effects that weight functions can have on the information about θ.
Varietal and geographic classification of french red wines in terms of major acids

Concentrations of acids other than malic and lactic appeared to be related more to area of production than to grape variety. These variables (2- hydroxyglutaric, butyric and isovaleric acid concentrations) were attributed to differences in the technological process used for vinification in the various areas. Shikimic and galacturonic acids were helpful for classifying and discriminating wine varieties. Principal component analysis characterised Cabernet Franc, Grenache and Carignan wines well by their acid content but failed to discriminate Merlot from Cabernet Sauvignon and Cinsault. Estimating the temperature evolution of foodstuffs during freezing with a 3D meshless numerical method

Abstract Freezing processes are characterised by sharp changes in specific heat capacity and thermal conductivity for temperatures close to the freezing point. This leads to strong nonlinearities in the governing PDE that may be difficult to resolve using traditional numerical methods. In this work we present a meshless numerical method, based on a local Hermite radial basis function collocation approach in finite differencing mode, to allow the solution of freezing problems. Bounds to internal forces for elastic-plastic solids subjected to variable loads

Considering an elastic-plastic workhardening solid with piecewise linear yield surfaces and a piecewise linear workhardening law, we give a method for constructing bounds to the internal forces and to the (hardened) yield stresses produced by the action of variable loads at any point of the body and at any time. The loading history is supposed to be unknown, but the loads range within a given domain.
On the classification of Kim and Kostrikin manifolds

International audience; We completely classify the topological and geometric structures of some series of closed connected orientable 3-manifolds introduced by Kim and Kostrikin in [20, 21] as quotient spaces of certain polyhedral 3-cells by pairwise identifications of their boundary faces. Then we study further classes of closed orientable 3-manifolds arising from similar polyhedral schemata, and describe their topological properties.

A classical random walk $(S_t, t\in\mathbb{N})$ is defined by $S_t:=\displaystyle\sum_{n=0}^t X_n$, where $(X_n)$ are i.i.d. When the increments $(X_n)_{n\in\mathbb{N}}$ are a one-order Markov chain, a short memory is introduced in the dynamics of $(S_t)$. This so-called "persistent" random walk is nolonger Markovian and, under suitable conditions, the rescaled process converges towards the integrated telegraph noise (ITN) as the time-scale and space-scale parameters tend to zero (see Herrmann and Vallois, 2010; Tapiero-Vallois, Tapiero-Vallois2}).
