Risk assessment in ginecology and obstetrics in Sicily: an approach based on Wolff's Criteria

Objectives To apply Wolff’s Criteria to hospital discharge records (HDR) in order to detect adverse events worthy of further study. Methods Gynecology and Obstetrics Units of three Sicilian hospitals were considered and HDR regarding ordinary and day hospital admissions in 2008 were collected. A matched case-control study was designed, by random selection of 10 controls at maximum for each case. Matching was performed on the variables age and speciality of admission (gynecology or obstetrics). Results Out of a total of 7011 HDR examined, 114 cases were identified with Wolff’s Criteria. Abstract The structural stability and physical properties of CrVO4 under compression were studied by x-ray diffraction, Raman spectroscopy, optical absorption, resistivity measurements, and ab initio calculations up to 10 GPa. High-pressure x-ray diffraction and Raman measurements show that CrVO4 undergoes a phase transition from the ambient pressure orthorhombic CrVO4-type structure (Cmcm space group, phase III) to the high-pressure monoclinic CrVO4-V phase, which is proposed to be isomorphic to the wolframite structure. Towards a new conception of metaphysics: Lambert’s criticism on Wolff’s mathematical method

This paper discusses Lambert’s criticism of Wolff’s mathematical method. I take this criticism to consist of two main aspects. Lambert tries on the one hand to revise Wolff’s idea of fundamental concepts by providing what he takes to be a more profound theory of concepts. On the other hand, Lambert introduces postulates that regulate the connection between fundamental concepts and account for their application to experience. Both transformations allow Lambert to put forward a novel approach to metaphysics which is essentially oriented towards experience.

On the sources of the late integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect

In some scenarios, the peculiar gravitational potential of linear and mildly nonlinear structures depends on time and, as a result of this dependence, a late integrated Sachs-Wolfe effect appears. Here, an appropriate formalism is used which allows us to improve on the analysis of the spatial scales and locations of the main cosmological inhomogeneities producing this effect. The study is performed in the framework of the currently preferred flat model with cosmological constant, and it is also developed in an open model for comparisons. Results from this analysis are used to discuss the contribution of Great Attractor-like objects, voids, and other structures to the CMB anisotropy.

Residual fluctuations in the microwave background at large angular scales: Revision of the Sachs-Wolfe effect

In this paper we revise the Sachs-Wolfe (SW) computation of large-scale an isotropies of the microwave background temperature, taking into account the properties of the metrics admitting an isotropic distribution of collisionless photons. We show that the metric used by SW belongs to the aforementioned class, and conclude that the microwave background (once the dipolar anisotropy has been subtracted) should now be isotropic at large angular scales, provided that it was isotropic on the last scattering surface and assuming that the growing mode of a pressureless Einstein-de Sitter perturbation is a good description of the metric.

Wolfe was among the very few economists of the progressive era who openly expressed his concerns about certain implications of eugenic rhetoric for the social science. Mean ergodic composition operators on Banach spaces of holomorphic functions

[EN] Given a symbol cc, i.e., a holomorphic endomorphism of the unit disc, we consider the composition operator C-phi(f) = f circle phi defined on the Banach spaces of holomorphic functions A(D) and H-infinity(D). We obtain different conditions on the symbol phi which characterize when the composition operator is mean ergodic and uniformly mean ergodic in the corresponding spaces. These conditions are related to the asymptotic behavior of the iterates of the symbol. Finally, we deal with some particular case in the setting of weighted Banach spaces of holomorphic functions.

The Cabibbo angle as a universal seed for quark and lepton mixings

A model-independent ansatz to describe lepton and quark mixing in a unified way is suggested based upon the Cabibbo angle. In our framework neutrinos mix in a "Bi-Large" fashion, while the charged leptons mix as the "down-type" quarks do. In addition to the standard Wolfenstein parameters (lambda, A) two other free parameters are needed to specify the physical lepton mixing matrix. Through this simple assumption one makes specific predictions for the atmospheric angle as well as leptonic CP violation in good agreement with current observations.
