Tourism Statistics for Destination Management: The Trips/Arrivals Model

2014

Simply counting the number of tourists in a destination is not as simple as one might initially think. The present work intends to formalize a conceptual model by decomposing tourism nights, trips, and average duration of visit in a given destination, in terms of quantities and parameters that only for a small part could be derived from official tourism statistics. On the other hand, most of the quantities and parameters required for determining the number of tourists in a given destination are in general unknown, and need to be (directly or indirectly) estimated. Empirical evidences resulting from a survey on incoming tourism in Sicily are provided, showing the biases affecting supply-side…

Efficient techniques for energy saving in data center networks

2018

Data centers are constructed with a huge number of network devices to support the expanding cloud based services. These devices are used to achieve the highest performance in case of full utilization of the network. However, the peak capacity of the network is rarely reached. Consequently, many devices are set into idle state and cause a huge energy waste leading to a non-proportionality between the network load and the energy consumed. In this paper, we propose a new approach to improve the efficiency of data centers in terms of energy consumption. Our approach exploits the correlation in time of the inter-node communication traffic and some topological features to maximize energy saving w…

Aviation Crew Recovery Experiences on Outstations

2016

Abstract ACMI flight crews spend considerable time away from home on outstations. This study suggests that this long term stay carries its own considerations in regards to rest recovery with practical implications for Fatigue Risk Management as prescribed by ICAO. Four recovery experiences, Work Detachment, Control, Relaxation and Mastery, are identified and correlated with 28 crew behaviours on base. The results indicate improvement considerations for airline management organizing a long term contract with ACMI crews, in particular to increase schedule stability to improve the crew member’s sense of Control.

Angular dependence of the emissivity of bare soils in the thermal infrared

2009

Emissivity is one of the main factors to take into account when studying processes that take place in the Earth surface by using radiance measurements in the thermal infrared, such as surface energy balance, land surface temperature (LST) retrieval, classification of different types of surface, etc. For this reason it is necessary to study the factors that can influence the emissivity. The present work evaluates one of these factors: the variation of the emissivity with the zenithal observation angle over bare soils, specifically the variation of the relative emissivity calculated from measurements of radiances, almost simultaneous, at nadir (0o) and at a certain angle (Θ). The measurements…

Plant invasion risk inside and outside protected areas: Propagule pressure, abiotic and biotic factors definitively matter

2023

Invasive alien species are among the main global drivers of biodiversity loss posing major challenges to nature conservation and to managers of protected areas. The present study applied a methodological framework that combined invasive Species Distribution Models, based on propagule pressure, abiotic and biotic factors for 14 invasive alien plants of Union concern in Italy, with the local interpretable model-agnostic explanation analysis aiming to map, evaluate and analyse the risk of plant invasions across the country, inside and outside the network of protected areas. Using a hierarchical invasive Species Distribution Model, we explored the combined effect of propagule pressure, abiotic …

Neural networks for the diagnostics of gas turbine engines

1996

The paper describes the activities carried out for developing and testing Back Propagation Neural Networks (BPNN) for the gas turbine engine diagnostics. One of the aims of this study was to analyze the problems encountered during training using large number of patterns. Each pattern contains information about the engine thermodynamic behaviour when there is a fault in progress. Moreover the research studied different architectures of BPNN for testing their capability to recognize patterns even when information is noised. The results showed that it is possible to set-up and optimize suitable and robust Neural Networks useful for gas turbine diagnostics. The methods of Gas Path Analysis furn…

Construction of Disjoint Virtual Backbones for Wireless Sensor Networks

2020

A wireless sensor network is a wireless network of sensors aimed at monitoring physical events. It has ingratiated itself into almost all areas of human endeavors. Data dissemination in these networks is quite challenging and is generally accomplished by flooding. But flooding introduces broadcast storm problem due from implosion and overlap. To overcome this, topology management can prescribe a virtual backbone network to which routing is confined. In this paper we propose an algorithm that constructs multiple disjoint virtual backbone networks, using only nodes' locations. The disjointedness makes routing more robust and the network exploitation energy efficient. Simulations show our algo…

RoadMic: Road Surface Monitoring Using Vehicular Sensor Networks with Microphones

2010

Road surface analysis including pothole reports is an important problem for road maintainers and drivers. In this paper we propose a methodology for pothole detection using mobile vehicles equipped with off the shelf microphone and global positioning devices attached to an on-board computer. The approach is generic enough to be extended for other kind of event detection using different sensors as well. The vehicles are driving on public streets and measuring pothole induced sound signals. Our approach was tested and evaluated by real world experiments in a road segment for which we had established the ground truth beforehand. The results show pothole detection with high accuracy despite the…

Resource Allocation for Multi-Access Edge Computing with Fronthaul and Backhaul Constraints

2021

Edge computing is able to provide proximity solutions for the future wireless network to accommodate different types of devices with various computing service demands. Meanwhile, in order to provide ubiquitous connectivities to massive devices over a relatively large area, densely deploying remote radio head (RRH) is considered as a cost-efficient solution. In this work, we consider a vertical and heterogeneous multiaccess edge computing system. In the system, the RRHs are deployed for providing wireless access for the users and the edge node with computing capability can process the computation requests from the users. With the objective to minimize the total energy consumption for process…

Low Latency Ambient Backscatter Communications with Deep Q-Learning for Beyond 5G Applications

2020

Low latency is a critical requirement of beyond 5G services. Previously, the aspect of latency has been extensively analyzed in conventional and modern wireless networks. With the rapidly growing research interest in wireless-powered ambient backscatter communications, it has become ever more important to meet the delay constraints, while maximizing the achievable data rate. Therefore, to address the issue of latency in backscatter networks, this paper provides a deep Q-learning based framework for delay constrained ambient backscatter networks. To do so, a Q-learning model for ambient backscatter scenario has been developed. In addition, an algorithm has been proposed that employ deep neur…
