Social interaction in management group meetings: a case study of Finnish hospital.

Purpose – The purpose of this paper is to understand the role of management group meetings (MGMs) in hospital organization by examining the social interaction in these meetings. Design/methodology/approach – This case study approaches social interaction from a structuration point of view. Social network analysis and qualitative content analysis are applied. Findings – The findings show that MGMs are mainly forums for information sharing. Meetings are not held for problem solving or decision making, and operational coordinating is limited. Abstract Axel Honneth’s recognition theory is a useful ethical framework for social work. Stephen Webb connects it straightforwardly with the relativistic ethical tradition that arguably emphasises the role of differences too much. However, this article shows that an alternative objectivist reading of recognition theory evades Webb’s critique and describes a balanced attitude towards otherness, fitting the practical field of social work. Practices of Writing in Ethnographic Work

Although the practice of writing is key to the production of ethnographic knowledge, the topic remains understudied. Using material from our own ethnographic research in the fields of air travel and cultural heritage as data, we develop a reflexive account of ethnographic writing. We examine in detail the practices of jotting down observations, writing field notes, analytic annotating, ordering and rearranging, and drafting and revising papers. The article takes a praxeological stance, conceptualizing writing as a practice that is simultaneously cognitive, embodied, and material.
