Subjective Evaluation of Video on Demand Systems Using Different Network Connections
2009
Nowadays, society makes use of new technologies as they appear. Due to this boom, the use of resources via web is increasing notably. In of training and education cases, companies such as universities are offering tele-learning platforms to complement and facilitate the learning process. Some of these called e-learning platforms can have explanatory videos as a resource for training. For the codification of these videos, we have to use parameters which provide a trade-off between the video sizes to be transmitted that optimize bandwidth and video and audio quality. This paper presents a subjective study of the video quality on transmission depending on the types of users’ network access to …
Cloud-based eHealth video encoding system for real time thermographic streaming: Performance evaluation
2017
Recent studies about the use of cloud platforms indicate that more than three-fourths of healthcare institutions apply these technologies in their daily lives. However, in most cases the cloud is based on “Infrastructure as a Service”, instead of developing new applications using the benefits that can bring us this type of technology. For these reasons, this paper shows a private cloud-based system to provide a new application based on thermographic video streaming. In this case, the cloud architecture is divided into three zones. The first zone is where the patient is under medical supervision through body temperature analysis using a global thermal camera. The second zone is the cloud its…
Phone-Controlled Delivery of NGN Services into Residential Environments
2008
The horizontally layered architecture of the IMS/NGN standards family enables the delivery of services independent of access network and requesting device. In this article, the authors propose a further separation of service control and delivery, allowing the requesting device - in particular a user's mobile phone - to invite other devices (we will focus on DLNA appliances) into the service delivery, enhancing both user experience and service design flexibility. The proposed solution builds on exploiting proximity technologies (e.g. barcodes, NFC) for pairing the control device with a remote environment. Motivated by scenarios, the architecture concepts are explained and a prototype that wa…

Available from 16/07/2021. Ultra-reliable low latency communication (URLLC) and massive machine type communications (mMTC) are two of the three major technological pillars in 5G. For medium access in mMTC scenarios, e.g., smart cities, a major bottleneck for achieving reli…
Improve Your Social Network and Have the Advantage in the Employment Seeking Process
2021
Human resource management uses social networks to identify new employees. This research investigates if people use social networks to identify employment opportunities and how they improve their networks to get easier and quicker access to information and resources. Researchers worldwide devote their attention to different aspects of identification of new employees via social networks. The authors of the paper have done empirical research based on an online survey with 298 respondents, and the data obtained from the survey has been analysed using various statistical tools. The number of suitable candidates for employment is decreasing and companies need knowledge about the employment seekin…
Forest Road Planning, Construction and Maintenance to Improve Forest Fire Fighting: a Review
2019
Forest roads play a key-role in fire fighting activities. In fact, all ground-based activities are strictly related to the presence of forest roads as access to fire edge. In spite of this important role, forest roads are often planned and built without considering their use in fire fighting, and this also occurs in literature, where few studies are dedicated to the importance of forest roads in fire fighting. A well-developed and well-maintained forest road network is the answer to different needs in fire management. The objective of this review is to clarify basic principles for obtaining efficient road network also for fire fighting, collecting, defining and resuming the main roles, the …
The Relationship Between Safety Attitudes and Occupational Accidents
2011
This research provides empirical evidence on the relationships between employee attitudes to safety issues and accident indicators in a Spanish context. The research attempts to review to what degree those attitudes reflect a collective, or shared, climate for safety within a number of organizations. Data were gathered from workers in a number of industries in Valencia (Spain) by questionnaire. A total of 1,234 valid questionnaires were completed and formed the basis for subsequent analysis. Analysis of the attitude dimensions found a similar structure to that found in previous research in other countries, as well as identifying those dimensions shared within groups, more likely to represe…
Metabolic shift of polyphosphate-accumulating organisms with different levels of polyphosphate storage
2012
Previous studies have shown that polyphosphate-accumulating organisms (PAOs) are able to behave as glycogen-accumulating organisms (GAOs) under different conditions. In this study we investigated the behavior of a culture enriched with Accumulibacter at different levels of polyphosphate (poly-P) storage. The results of stoichiometric ratios Gly degraded/HAc uptake, PHB synthesized/HAc uptake, PHV synthesized/HAc uptake and P release/HAc uptake confirmed a metabolic shift from PAO metabolism to GAO metabolism: PAOs with high poly-P content used the poly-P to obtain adenosine tri-phosphate (ATP), and glycogen (Gly) to obtain nicotinamide adenine dinucleotide (NADH) and some ATP. In a test whe…
Prediction of peak shape in hydro-organic and micellar-organic liquid chromatography as a function of mobile phase composition
2007
A simple model is proposed that relates the parameters describing the peak width with the retention time, which can be easily predicted as a function of mobile phase composition. This allows the further prediction of peak shape with global errors below 5%, using a modified Gaussian model with a parabolic variance. The model is useful in the optimisation of chromatographic resolution to assess an eventual overlapping of close peaks. The dependence of peak shape with mobile phase composition was studied for mobile phases containing acetonitrile in the presence and absence of micellised surfactant (micellar-organic and hydro-organic reversed-phase liquid chromatography, RPLC). In micellar RPLC…
Mini-COVIDNet: Efficient Lightweight Deep Neural Network for Ultrasound Based Point-of-Care Detection of COVID-19
2021
Lung ultrasound (US) imaging has the potential to be an effective point-of-care test for detection of COVID-19, due to its ease of operation with minimal personal protection equipment along with easy disinfection. The current state-of-the-art deep learning models for detection of COVID-19 are heavy models that may not be easy to deploy in commonly utilized mobile platforms in point-of-care testing. In this work, we develop a lightweight mobile friendly efficient deep learning model for detection of COVID-19 using lung US images. Three different classes including COVID-19, pneumonia, and healthy were included in this task. The developed network, named as Mini-COVIDNet, was bench-marked with …
