Multimodal biometric recognition systems using deep learning based on the finger vein and finger knuckle print fusion

2020

Recognition systems using multimodal biometrics attracts attention because they improve recognition efficiency and high-security level compared to the unimodal biometrics system. In this study, the authors present a secure multimodal biometrics recognition system based on the deep learning method that uses convolutional neural networks (CNNs). The authors propose two multimodal architectures using the finger knuckle print (FKP) and the finger vein (FV) biometrics with different levels of fusion: the features level fusion and scores level fusion. The features extraction for FKP and FV are performed using transfer learning CNN architectures: AlexNet, VGG16, and ResNet50. The key step aims to …

Image Segmentation by Deep Community Detection Approach

2017

International audience; To address the problem of segmenting an image into homogeneous communities this paper proposes an efficient algorithm to detect deep communities in the image by maximizing at each stage a new centrality measure, called the local Fiedler vector centrality (LFVC). This measure is associated with the sensitivity of algebraic connectivity to node removals. We show that a greedy node removal strategy, based on iterative maximization of LFVC, has bounded performance loss relative to the optimal, but intractable, combinatorial batch removal strategy. A remarkable feature of this method is the ability to segments the image automatically into homogeneous regions by maximizing…

Challenges and Opportunities using MultiChain for Real Estate

2019

The real estate market involves multiple untrusted actors with contrasting objectives. We propose REchain, a blockchain-based platform for real estate, which provides benefits to all actors in terms of transparency, trust, immutability, and traceability. REchain architecture handles real estate data through well-defined workflows that leverage the MultiChain platform. REchain changes the real estate market enabling direct transactions without intermediaries, and providing new mechanisms for negotiating the purchase conditions. This paper refutes the misleading idea of using blockchains for solving generic problems as blockchain platforms have peculiar features that make them suitable for sp…

Boosting the in situ encapsulation of proteins with MIL-100(Fe): the role of strong Lewis acid centers

2021

Encapsulation of biomolecules using Metal-Organic Frameworks (MOFs) to form stable biocomposites has been demonstrated a valuable strategy for their preservation and controlled release, which has been however restricted to specific electrostatic surface conditions. We present a general in situ strategy that promotes the spontaneous MOF growth onto a broad variety of proteins, for the first time, regardless of their surface nature. We demonstrate that MOFs based on cations exhibiting considerable inherent acidity such as MIL-100(Fe) enable biomolecule encapsulation, including alkaline proteins previously inaccesible by the welldeveloped in situ encapsulation with azolate-based MOFs. In parti…

Predicting the Success of Blastocyst Implantation from Morphokinetic Parameters Estimated through CNNs and Sum of Absolute Differences

2019

The process of In Vitro Fertilization deals nowadays with the challenge of selecting viable embryos with the highest probability of success in the implantation. In this topic, we present a computer-vision-based system to analyze the videos related to days of embryo development which automatically extracts morphokinetic features and estimates the success of implantation. A robust algorithm to detect the embryo in the culture image is proposed to avoid artifacts. Then, the ability of Convolutional Neural Networks (CNNs) for predicting the number of cells per frame is novelty combined with the Sum of Absolute Differences (SAD) signal in charge of capturing the amount of intensity changes durin…

On the Statistical Properties of Phase Crossings and Random FM Noise in Double Rayleigh Fading Channels

2016

In this paper, we study the statistics of phase processes and random frequency modulation (FM) noise encountered in double Rayleigh fading channels. The Rayleigh processes making up the double Rayleigh channel are assumed to be independent but not necessarily identically distributed. The Doppler power spectral densities of these processes are supposed to be symmetric about the carrier frequency. Under these fading conditions, we derive first an expression for the joint probability density function (jpdf) of the phase process and its rate of change. Capitalizing on this jpdf formula, we then investigate the probability density function (pdf) and cumulative distribution function (cdf) of rand…

Statistical Properties of Double Hoyt Fading With Applications to the Performance Analysis of Wireless Communication Systems

2018

In this paper, we investigate the statistical properties of double Hoyt fading channels, where the overall received signal is determined by the product of two statistically independent but not necessarily identically distributed single Hoyt processes. Finite-range integral expressions are first derived for the probability density function (PDF), cumulative distribution function (CDF), level-crossing rate (LCR), and average duration of fades of the envelope fading process. A closed-form approximate solution is also deduced for the LCR by making use of the Laplace approximation theorem. Applying the derived PDF of the double Hoyt channel, we then provide analytical expressions for the average…

On the Statistical Analysis of Equal Gain Combining over Multiple Double Rice Fading Channels in Cooperative Networks

2010

This article analyzes the statistical properties of narrowband mobile-to-mobile (M2M) fading channels with equal gain combining (EGC) under line-of-sight (LOS) propagation conditions. Here, we study a dual-hop amplify-and-forward (AF)relay network. It is assumed that there can exist LOS components in the transmission links between the source mobile station and the destination mobile station via K mobile relays. In order to cater for asymmetric fading conditions in the relay links, the received signal envelope at the output of the equal gain (EG) combiner is thus modeled as a sum of K double Rice processes. These processes are considered to be independent but not necessarily identically dist…

Urban sprawl and health outcome associations in sicily

2019

Urban sprawl has several negative impacts on the environment, the economy, and human health. The main objective of this work was to formulate and validate a sprawl/compactness index for Sicilian municipalities and evaluate its association with health outcomes. An ecological study was conducted with 110 municipalities in Sicily, Italy. Principal component analysis was adopted to create the sprawl/compactness Sicilian index, and linear regression analysis was used to evaluate the association between the sprawl index and health outcomes. More variance of the new sprawl index was explained by the working factor, followed by density, surface extension, and land use mix. When validating the index…

Do shippers’ characteristics influence port choice criteria? Capturing heterogeneity by using latent class models

2022

Abstract This paper focuses on the study of Spanish ceramic tile exporters' port choice criteria, an industry that is characterized by a low unit value index. Thus, transport costs highly influence the competitiveness of their products in international markets, representing a relatively high percentage of the value of the shipment. It is therefore critical for this type of industry to have access to efficient door-to-door maritime chains. Determinants of port choice are analysed through a latent class model allowing to link class membership to specific characteristics of the shippers and their shipments such as the size of the company, the value of the shipment, the destination market and t…
