The Impact of a Mathematics Bridging Intervention on the Inclusivity of a University Economics Programme
2021
The inclusivity of all students in the University Economics programme is in danger due to a high failure rate in the first-year mathematics course. This study investigates whether participation in a bridging course, and what aspects of it, can contribute to equal opportunities and increased inclusivity in the Mathematics for Economists course, and henceforth reduce the failure rate. It adds to the meager European literature on remedial course effectiveness. Through the use of ordinary least square regression analyses, a significant positive effect of participation in the bridging course was found for the student group as a whole. Furthermore, the results indicated that participation was par…
University experience of a tutorial action programme during the COVID-19 lockdown in teacher training at a Valencian University (Spain)
2021
Coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) is perceived as the worst modern-times pandemic. This entirely new health situation entailed a new challenge to the education system. To our knowledge, the impact of alternative teaching methods derived from the social distancing imposed by COVID-19 on university student perception in teacher education has not been investigated. The aim of this study was to analyse an educative experience developed in a Faculty of Teaching from March 2020 to July 2020 in order to overcome the challenge imposed by COVID-19. A qualitative approach was used for data collection and analysis using four information sources: (a) The final written documents developed by the worki…
A Multilevel Analysis of Economic Literacy Among International Students
2021
International student mobility has increased in the past years. The inclusion of a highly heterogeneous group of students requires updated recruitment and admission strategies. A particularly vulnerable group of international students are refugees, who have an exceptionally high risk of dropping out of their studies. We present an entrance assessment of incoming international students from 77 countries who are at the beginning of their studies in Germany. Based on this unique sample, we examine (i) whether there are systematic country-specific effects on the economic literacy of beginning students of business and economics and (ii) whether refugee students differ from the group of internati…
Objectives and methodology: Guidelines of the Italian Society for Haemostasis and Thrombosis (SISET).
2009
A current goal of the Italian Society for Thrombosis and Haemostasis (SISET) is the production of guidelines for clinical conditions related to haemostasis and thrombosis. In 2006, the Executive Committee of SISET adopted a new program for the production of methodologically and scientifically sound guidelines aimed at both addressing clinical practice and stimulating new research. The first major step for this program was to train methodologists to manage working groups that compose the guidelines, and to create a reference document that describes the development of the program. The aim of the present paper is to report a short version of this methodological document, for those who wish to …
Työelämän aikuiskoulutusta arvioimassa
1992
The article is an assessment of some recent wide-scoping development and education project carried out in the working life. ln addition to presenting the experiences and results of empirical research projects, the article takes a more general view of the quality issues connected to adult education from the aspects of planning, implementation and assessment. It appears that despite the availability of personnel training planning guides, textbooks and training for trainers during the past couple of decades, the adult education action models used in the working life are highly conventional, at times even school-like. Small and medium-large enterprises especially tend to continue to rely a lot …

Experimental Study on the Performance of Timber Frame Wall Panels in Mediterranean Construction
2018
Only recently, the use of wooden buildings is spreading in the central and southern parts of the Italy due to national and EU policies on eco-sustainability and energy saving. Knowledge of the durability of the building envelope elements, generally made with dry assembled stratified systems, is still insufficient. The paper presents the first results of a durability evaluation of multilayer timber panel applied to Platform Frame System buildings, focusing on the variation of energy performance over time. The case study describes the construction of two single-family houses in the municipality of San Cataldo (Sicily, Italy). The used timber multilayer panel presents a stratigraphy suitable f…
The passive state: A protective mechanism for information in working memory tasks.
2021
Memory representations can be stored in a passive state in a visual working memory (VWM) task. However, it remains unclear whether the representations stored in the passive state are prone to interference and decay. To explore this issue, we asked participants to successively remember two sets of memory items (M1 and M2) in three test manners: a combined test (both M1 and M2 are probed simultaneously), a backward test (probe M2 first and M1 second), or a forward test (probe M1 first and M2 second). We found that the contralateral delay activity (CDA) amplitude after the onset of M2 only tracked M2 independently of M1 in the two separate tests (Experiments 1-3), and the accuracy of M1 was we…
