3D high definition video coding on a GPU-based heterogeneous system
2013
H.264/MVC is a standard for supporting the sensation of 3D, based on coding from 2 (stereo) to N views. H.264/MVC adopts many coding options inherited from single view H.264/AVC, and thus its complexity is even higher, mainly because the number of processing views is higher. In this manuscript, we aim at an efficient parallelization of the most computationally intensive video encoding module for stereo sequences. In particular, inter prediction and its collaborative execution on a heterogeneous platform. The proposal is based on an efficient dynamic load balancing algorithm and on breaking encoding dependencies. Experimental results demonstrate the proposed algorithm's ability to reduce the…
Understanding adults’ strong problem-solving skills based on PIAAC
2017
Purpose Research has shown that the problem-solving skills of adults with a vocational education and training (VET) background in technology-rich environments (TREs) are often inadequate. However, some adults with a VET background do have sound problem-solving skills. The present study aims to provide insight into the socio-demographic, work-related and everyday life factors that are associated with a strong problem-solving performance. Design/methodology/approach The study builds on large-scale data of the Programme for the International Assessment of Adult Competencies (PIAAC) and gives insight into VET adults (N = 12,929) with strong problem-solving skills in 11 European countries. Find…
Methods of Condition Monitoring and Fault Detection for Electrical Machines
2021
Nowadays, electrical machines and drive systems are playing an essential role in different applications. Eventually, various failures occur in long-term continuous operation. Due to the increased influence of such devices on industry, industrial branches, as well as ordinary human life, condition monitoring and timely fault diagnostics have gained a reasonable importance. In this review article, there are studied different diagnostic techniques that can be used for algorithms’ training and realization of predictive maintenance. Benefits and drawbacks of intelligent diagnostic techniques are highlighted. The most widespread faults of electrical machines are discussed as well as techniques fo…
The Effects on the World of Work, che ha per oggetto l’impatto delle Icts sulle relazioni di lavoro in dieci Stati, sia all’interno dell’Unione Europea che in paesi extra-europei.
2018
The present work summarises the main results of the joint Eurofound-ILO report on «Working anytime, anywhere: The effects on the world of work», focusing on the impact of ICTs on the employment relationship in ten selected countries (both European and non-European). The essay is mainly aimed at critically analysing the opportunities and the risks related with the digitisation of work in contemporary capitalism, mainly in terms of impacts on working time, work-life reconciliation, health and safety and productivity. In the meanwhile, it offers an overview of the main policies carried out by the actors of the different industrial relations systems to develop telework and smart-working in Euro…

Network Centralities and Node Ranking
2017
An important problem in network analysis is understanding how much nodes are important in order to “propagate” the information across the input network. To this aim, many centrality measures have been proposed in the literature and our main goal here is that of providing an overview of the most important of them. In particular, we distinguish centrality measures based on walks computation from those based on shortest-paths computation. We also provide some examples in order to clarify how these measures can be calculated, with special attention to Degree Centrality, Closeness Centrality and Betweennes Centrality.
Work Partitioning on Parallel and Distributed Agent-Based Simulation
2017
Work partitioning is a key challenge with ap- plications in many scientific and technological fields. The problem is very well studied with a rich literature on both distributed and parallel computing architectures. In this paper we deal with the work partitioning problem for parallel and distributed agent-based simulations which aims at (i) balancing the overall load distribution, (ii) minimizing, at the same time, the communication overhead due to agents' inter-dependencies. We introduce a classification taxonomy of work partitioning strategies and present a space-based work partitioning ap- proach, based on a Quad-tree data structure, which enables to: identify a good space partitioning …
k-Truss Decomposition for Modular Centrality
2018
There is currently much interest in identifying influential spreaders in complex networks due to many applications concerned, such as controlling the outbreak of epidemics and conducting advertisements for commercial products, and so on. A plethora of centrality measures have been proposed over the years based on the topological properties of networks. However, most of these classical centrality measures fail to select the most influential nodes in networks with a modular structure despite that it is an omnipresent property in real-world networks. Few authors have introduced centrality measures tailored to networks with community structure. In a recent work, we have shown that, in this case…
On the problem of visualizing point distributions in high dimensional spaces
1995
Abstract Exploring dynamical systems with the aid of computer graphics requires that the relevant structures can be seen and be noticed. This poses special problems if the system is multidimensional, and it has to be decided which kind of projection serves the purpose. I propose using the mathematical frame of categories and functors to describe the process of visualization. This allows detecting and analyzing possible sources of misinterpretation in a formal way. The distribution of distances of embedded electroencephalographic data from a fixed reference point is used as an example for discussing some aspects of the visualization process. The multidimensional p-norms are an example of a p…
