Comprehensive Experimental Analysis of Handcrafted Descriptors for Face Recognition
2018
Over the past few decades, LBP descriptor, which shown its high robustness in extracting discriminative features from an image, has been successfully applied in diverse challenging computer vision applications including face recognition. The efficiency and usability of the LBP operator and its success in various real world applications has inspired the development of much new powerful LBP variants. Indeed, after the appearance of the LBP operator, several renowned extensions and modifications of LBP have been proposed in the literature to the point that it can be difficult to recognize their respective LBP-related strategies, strengths and weaknesses according to a given application, and th…
A Scheme for Secure and Reliable Distributed Data Storage in Unattended WSNs
2010
Unattended Wireless Sensor Networks (UWSNs) operated in hostile environments face a risk on data security due to the absence of real-time communication between sensors and sinks, which imposes sensors to accumulate data till the next visit of a mobile sink to off-load the data. Thus, how to ensure forward secrecy, backward secrecy and reliability of the accumulated data is a great challenge. For example, if a sensor is compromised, pre-compromise data accumulated in the sensor is exposed to access. In addition, by holding key secrecy of the compromised sensor, attackers also can learn post-compromise data in the sensor. Furthermore, in practical UWSNs, once sensors stop working for accident…
UDP flows in Cognitive Radios with Channel Aggregation and Fragmentation: A Test-bed Based Evaluation
2018
Channel aggregation (CA) and channel fragmentation (CF) have been studied extensively in cognitive radios (CRs) for many years. However, a test-bed evaluation for such techniques at flow level is still open. In this study, employing National Instruments devices, a test-bed is set up to evaluate the performance of UDP flows for CRs with CA and CF, considering the aspects of blocking, preemption, and throughput in probability. The measurements clearly show that there are performance improvements in applying CA and CF in CRs for UDP flows.
Evaluating State-Based Intention Recognition Algorithms against Human Performance
2014
In this paper, we describe a novel intention recognition approach based on the representation of state information in a cooperative human-robot environment. We compare the output of the intention recognition algorithms to those of an experiment involving humans attempting to recognize the same intentions in a manufacturing kitting domain. States are represented by a combination of spatial relationships in a Cartesian frame along with cardinal direction information. Based upon a set of predefined high-level states relationships that must be true for future actions to occur, a robot can use the approaches described in this paper to infer the likelihood of subsequent actions occurring. This wo…
Ontology-based state representations for intention recognition in human–robot collaborative environments
2013
In this paper, we describe a novel approach for representing state information for the purpose of intention recognition in cooperative human-robot environments. States are represented by a combination of spatial relationships in a Cartesian frame along with cardinal direction information. This approach is applied to a manufacturing kitting operation, where humans and robots are working together to develop kits. Based upon a set of predefined high-level state relationships that must be true for future actions to occur, a robot can use the detailed state information described in this paper to infer the probability of subsequent actions occurring. This would allow the robot to better help the …

Evaluation of an Optical Energy Harvester for SHM Application
2019
Abstract In this paper a preliminary study on an array configuration of rectified optical nanoantennas for energy harvesting application is proposed. Currently, the major impediments for the use of the rectified optical nanoantenna known as rectenna are the relatively low conversion efficiency and low power transfer to the load, both of them caused mainly by the mismatch between the impedance of the rectifier (several kilo ohms) and that of the antenna (hundreds of ohm). For this reason, the design of the array represents a crucial point to obtain the maximum energy transfer from the rectenna to the load, represented as a typical DC/DC boost power converter, and modeled by an equivalent inp…

Review of machine to machine communication in smart grid
2016
Machine to machine communication (M2M) is a communication architecture that enables heterogeneous devices to interact with each other without human intervention. Smart Grid (SG) is one of the many applications areas in the M2M communication. Smart Grid demands advanced communication infrastructure for two-way communications between devices deployed at various locations in energy generation, transmission, distribution and consumption. The billions of electronic devices connected to the Smart Grid pose a big challenge to grid communication. Therefore, a feasible solution to efficient M2M has to overcome challenges of energy efficiency of connected devices, interoperability, coverage area, int…
A kernel support vector machine based technique for Crohnâs disease classification in human patients
2017
In this paper a new technique for classification of patients affected by Crohnâs disease (CD) is proposed. The proposed technique is based on a Kernel Support Vector Machine (KSVM) and it adopts a Stratified K-Fold Cross-Validation strategy to enhance the KSVM classifier reliability. Traditional manual classification methods require radiological expertise and they usually are very time-consuming. Accordingly to three expert radiologists, a dataset composed of 300 patients has been selected for KSVM training and validation. Each patient was codified by 22 extracted qualitative features and classified as Positive or Negative as the related histological specimen result showed the CD. The eff…
