International audience; This paper aims to show how Erika Steinbach, at the head of the BdV (Federation of Deportees) since 1998, has come to embody in person this large social group, in the eyes of the media and of various institutions. No stranger to controversy, she represents the hereditary German enemy in Poland (thus plaguing German diplomatic relations with the country) and is strongly rejected by certain parts of the population while being unconditionally supported by the deportees themselves. With World War II having razed vast parts of Europe by 1945, many citizens of the continent’s war-torn countries hoped they would soon leave behind the effects of turmoil, destruction, and trauma. The author examines the commemoration of D-Day (June 6, 1944), exploring why war commemoration rituals still captivate thousands of people and illustrating attempts that have been made to shape a peaceful future in postwar Europe. She draws on concepts of action theory to demonstrate how rituals create, in a single place, various kinds of space informed by ideology, beliefs, and knowledge and how they can help people come to terms with a harrowing past. W okresie II wojny światowej piłsudczycy, powszechnie obwiniani za klęskę wrześniową w 1939 r., znaleźli się w politycznej izolacji. Od początku marca 1942 r. piłsudczycy w Wielkiej Brytanii wydawali powielany biuletyn „Listy z Londynu”. Pojedynczy egzemplarz czasopisma liczył zazwyczaj od czterech do dziesięciu stron gęsto zapisanego maszynopisu w formacie A4. Powołanie własnego organu prasowego było sporym sukcesem. Celem artykułu jest ukazanie dominacji historii w stosunkach polsko-niemieckich od przełomu lat 80. i 90. XX w. po czasy współczesne. Trzydzieści minionych lat podzielono na cztery podokresy i zaprezentowano dominujące w nich kwestie historyczne. Wybrane przykłady problemów z przeszłości i debaty, jakie toczyły i toczą się nadal na ich temat, świadczą dobitnie o ich ogromnym znaczeniu dla rozwoju relacji między Polakami a Niemcami. Traces of the past: an interview study with Finnish war children who did not return to Finland after the Second World War

ABSTRACTThis paper is an in-depth qualitative study based on interviews with 10 Finnish children who were evacuated to Sweden during Second World War and who did not return to Finland after the war. The interviewees were asked to tell about their lives. Nine of them were between 2 and 5 years and one was 7 years old at the time of evacuation. The aim was to study how their childhood experiences were reflected in adult memories, how they remembered or did not remember. This paper focuses on the consequences of not knowing about one’s early life and also on whether it is possible to observe signs of the Finnish mother.
