Washington, une ville mondiale ?

2001

Washington DC is rarely mentioned in the scientific literature on world cities. However, its influence on the world economy is obvious (World Bank, IMF, Federal Reserve). As a new immigration center, Washington has grown rapidly into an international city. It is suggested that the concept of global city must be re-examined to propose a more flexible definition.

Solving congestion in cities : policies and contradictions

2009

International audience; Most cities in the world are now facing traffic gridlock. Local governements and transportation authorities are trying to tame a phenomenon which takes in fact very different forms depending on the level of social and economic development. Is it really possible to compare freeway gridlock in Los Angeles with rickshaw gridlock in Dhaka, Bangladesh ? When French cities embrace the development of urban bicycling, Chinese cities limit the use of bicycles. Using cases of cities in different parts of world, this presentation willl try to find some common trends in urban mobility policies and examine some contradictory developments.

Le regard dans la Mostellaria de Plaute

2014

2012

This thesis looks at happiness as perceived and shown in Christian Bobin's works. For this purpose, we used the approach of Bachelard to define Bobin’s symbolic element of happiness: the flame. To deal with the problem of time and its complexity, involved in our main problem, we applied theories of Bachelard, Bergson and those of modern physics, as well as the “logic of the contradictory” (of Lupasco). The images associated with intellect are analyzed based on Henry Corbin's works and are defined as “image- body-reality”. They testify of a mysticism which tends to “geopoetic” and the Unity of the universe. A language of “anima / animus” and a process of production of meaning, “the helix of …

Measurements of diachronic stability of agrarian exploitation

2007

International audience; Off-site material has two main interesting properties which are that it is spatially continuous and diachronic. Such data can be used to estimate how ancient societies invested in a space in terms of intensity, durability and stability, over the long term. This micro-analysis is based on a precise record of off-site material based on collection units which never exceed five hectares. Each off-site sherd was dated and attributed to one of seven chronological phases. Three new indicators are proposed to measure the level of investment of ancient societies. The computing and mapping of these indicators was done using GIS software. The data used in this paper come mainly…

Zwrot kulturowy w badaniach onomastycznych

2015

In the recent years, a turn towards interdisciplinary research in which proper names are presentedas an interpretation of reality and a mirror of historical, political, social and cultural processes has been observed in onomastics. Names can reflect a popular vision of the world presenting its anthropocentric conceptualization reconstructed on the basis of knowledge, beliefs, valuation systems and cultural experiences of people. Thus the cultural analysis of onyms comprises notions of a linguistic image of the world, point of view, profiling, conceptualization and categorization of ideas, valuation, stereotype and prototype, connotation, metaphor and metonymy. Special attention is also paid…

An overview of the concepts of change and development - from the premodern to modern era

2012

This chapter focuses on the concepts of change and progress: on one hand, it approaches this topic from the point of view of the history of science; on the other hand, from the point of view of modern developmental psychology. The section on the history of science focuses on the historical period of the pre-modern Hellenistic era to the Enlightenment. This period is long, and it therefore includes several, different world views and cultural trends. In this chapter culturally significant trends of thought within the PtolemaicAristotelic tradition are described. The section on the modern developmental psychology approach analyses the following questions: (1) which characteristics must changes …

Henkilön psykiatria : psykiatrian dialektinen filosofia

2017

The Finnish word ’henkilö’ is difficult to translate in English as a ‘Person’, but in international plan-language, Esperanto, we can quite exactly translate it as ‘spiritulo’. The word henkilö, spiritulo, is developed in the 19th century from the ancient Finnish word ‘henki’ by the medical doctor in Jyväskylä region Wolmar Schildt-Kilpinen. He was not satisfied with the simple translation from Latin word ‘persona’ to Finnish ‘persoona’, and so via the ancient word he conceptually combined the spiritulo to the dialectical process of negation of negation of the ethnic culture – elite culture – national culture. So the spiritulo could express the community (Gemeinschaft) and common (gemein) at…
