Local Formula with Mucoadhesive Property: A Randomized Clinical Trial of a Therapeutic Agent for the Treatment of Oral Aphthous Ulcers

2020

Background Recurrent or occasional aphthous lesions represent a painful oral condition with high prevalence. Since the etiology is still unclear and most likely related to a dysfunction in the local immune system, several treatment strategies have been proposed, including systemic agents, local agents, and laser therapy, to reduce the pain and discomfort for the patient without acting on the causes. Materials and methods The purpose of the present randomized study was to assess the clinical efficacy of a new topical gel with mucoadhesive property to reduce the pain and the dimension of the aphthosis lesions. Fifty patients presenting at least one minor ulcer were randomized to a control gro…

EP1155 Endoscopic near infrared and indocyanine green to verify the viability of the subcutaneous flap for vulvar cancer

2019

Introduction/Background Vulvar cancer often requires radical vulvectomy with subsequent vulvar flap due to tumor aggressiveness and a high percentage of relapses. Approximately in 20–60% of cases, there are post-operative complications ranging from infection to wound dehiscence, lymphocele and flap necrosis that often require reoperation. Several methods have been described to verify the vitality of the flap, especially in plastic surgery, but these are often expensive and require specific machinery that is not generally present in a gynecological clinic. We present a viability verification of V-Y fasciocutaneous advancement flap for vulvar reconstruction by Endoscopic Near-Infrared and Ind…

Technique and safety aspects of resistance exercises: a systematic review of the literature.

2009

A systematic review of the scientific literature was conducted to identify the optimal ranges of motion for preventing injury in the main joints of the body during resistance exercise performance. These ranges of motion are independent of the type in which the resistance exercises could be applied (ie, adults, elderly, athletes, recreational exercisers), and the regions examined include the shoulder, spine, and knee, which are injured most often. It can be concluded that during the performance of any resistance exercise, it is possible to put anatomical structures at risk with certain body positions; therefore, it is necessary to understand these movements so injury can be avoided.

Translation and testing of the Risk Assessment Pressure Ulcer Sore scale used among residents in Norwegian nursing homes.

2012

Published version of an article in the journal: BMJ Open. Also available from the publisher at: http://dx.doi.org/10.1136/bmjopen-2012-001575 Open access Objective. The purpose of this study was to translate and test the psychometric properties of the Norwegian-language version of the Risk Assessment Pressure Sore scale. Background. Risk assessment scales for pressure ulcer prevention have become an aspect of quality improvement in healthcare, but their effectiveness depends on the reliability and validity of the scale. Methods. A convenience sample of 481 residents in 15 nursing homes in rural Norway was included between January and June 2007. The English-language version of the Risk Asses…

A suspected case of hunting accident. Case report

2010

Nowadays, the use of molecular biology in forensics has made it possible to identify human victim and sometimes even the circumstances under which the death occurred through. In our case, a corpse of a 50-years old man with a gunshot wound was found in the woods. The suspected murderer declared that it had been a hunting accident while he shot a wild boar. During the autopsy, a bullet (Borra-bullet Gualandi, 32 gr) was found in the abdomen of the victim. The authors investigated the presence of boar and victim blood both on the bullet, in order to substantiate the thesis of the hunting accident. Laboratory investigations underscored the presence of human cellular material on the bullet, whi…

Post-cesarean necrotizing fasciitis caused by surgical site infection

2017

Necrotizing fasciitis (NF) is a rare, but rapidly progressive, potentially life-threatening soft tissue infection, with an incidence of 0.15-0.55 cases per 100,000 population. the gynecological-obstetric literature describes cases of NF due to surgical site infection (SSi) after cesarean delivery. this article discusses issues in the medicolegal evaluation of NF and the importance of prophylactic procedures, risk management protocols, and prompt diagnosis of this condition. two cases of post-cesarean NF due to SSi are reported. in both cases the responsibility lay with the hospitals and the medical staff owing to failure to adopt adequate SSi prophylaxis and to establish a timely diagnosis …

Reconstruction of Nasal Alar Defects with Freestyle Facial Artery Perforator Flaps

2014

In 2009, we have described the use of freestyle facial artery perforator flaps for one-stage nose reconstruction. Since then, several articles have reported the use of facial artery perforator flaps for nose reconstruction. The purpose of this article is to provide an update of the published technique after 10 years of experience. Since 2004, 21 patients have been treated with a freestyle facial artery perforator flap for one-stage reconstruction of the nasal ala. The flaps were 16 propellers, 4 V-Y, and 1 island transposition. A single venous congestion leading to a minor flap tip necrosis and a wound dehiscence was observed. All other flaps healed uneventfully. The V-Y design and multiple…

Supplemental Perioperative Oxygen and the Risk of Surgical Wound Infection
A Randomized Controlled Trial

2005

ContextSupplemental perioperative oxygen has been variously reported to halve or double the risk of surgical wound infection.ObjectiveTo test the hypothesis that supplemental oxygen reduces infection risk in patients following colorectal surgery.Design, Setting, and PatientsA double-blind, randomized controlled trial of 300 patients aged 18 to 80 years who underwent elective colorectal surgery in 14 Spanish hospitals from March 1, 2003, to October 31, 2004. Wound infections were diagnosed by blinded investigators using Centers for Disease Control and Prevention criteria. Baseline patient characteristics, anesthetic treatment, and potential confounding factors were recorded.InterventionsPati…
