Aiding phase unwrapping by increasing the number of residues in two-dimensional wrapped-phase distributions.

2015

In phase unwrapping residues are points of locally inconsistent phase that occur within a wrapped-phase map, which are usually regarded as being problematic for phase-unwrapping algorithms. Real phase maps typically contain a number of residues that are approximately proportional to the subsequent difficulty in unwrapping the phase distribution. This paper suggests the radical use of the discrete Fourier transform to actually increase the number of residues in 2D phase-wrapped images that contain discontinuities. Many of the additional residues that are artificially generated by this method are located on these discontinuities. For example, in fringe projection systems, such phase discontin…

The dead do not dress: contribution of forensic anthropology experiments to burial practices analysis

2012

International audience; The specific question of clothing presence in burial context is often answered positively, thanks to artifacts like brooches for example. But when artefacts are missing, the task is more difficult, and frequent osteological arguments can only suggest the presence of clothing with the deceased. The gap in determining the presence of clothing is essentially related to a misunderstanding of the effect of clothing on the rate of human decomposition, and thus on the final arrangement of bones (in both forensic and archaeological contexts). Some forensic experiments have been conducted in this regard (essentially in the United States) but no synthesis or archaeological app…

Effect of the extensional flow on the properties of oriented nanocomposite films for twist wrapping

2011

In this study, we examined the mechanical behavior of nanocomposite films based on polyethylene (PE) and pristine PE films. The films were prepared by film blowing and were then cold-drawn at low temperature. The experimental results show that cold drawing significantly enhanced the orientation; with increasing draw ratio (DR), the elastic modulus and tensile strength of the PE films strongly increased, particularly in the presence of the organoclay. To obtain polymeric films suitable for twist wrapping, the films must be sufficiently stiff so that no shrinkage or elastic recovery occur during or after twisting. The elongation at break and the yield strain sharply decreased with orientation…
