The Returns to Education in Rwanda

2005

05077; International audience; Based on data from the 1999–2001 Household Living Conditions Survey conducted by the Ministry of Finance and Economic Planning, we estimate wage equations for employees in Rwanda, treating the choice of employment sector as an endogenous process and making separate estimates for workers in the modern and traditional sectors of the economy. The results show that returns to education increase with the level of education, contrary to the pattern typically reported in the literature and that the returns to higher education is particularly high in Rwanda. A noteworthy feature in the results is that the returns to education are quite different across sectors of empl…

Physical factors affecting the production of amylase from Bacillus species isolated from natural environment

2014

The aim of conducted research was to determine influence of metabolites produced by Pseudomonas fluorescens on the growth of 4 phytopathogenic strains of Rhizoctonia solani marked R1, R2, R3 and R4 which infect sugar beetroot. The antagonistic properties were assessed with the culture-plate method on PDA medium for P. fluorescens cultured for 4, 6 8, 10 and 24 hours at 25 o C for 5 days. The fungistatic activity of P. fluorescens was determined against the growth rate index and the rate of mycelial growth inhibition. Obtained results prove, that Rhizoctonia spp. strains were both sensitive and resistant to metabolites produced by P. fluorescens. The highest inhibition of the linear growth o…

Implication of pyoverdines in the interactions of fluorescent pseudomonads with soil microflora and plant in the rhizosphere

2007

Soils are known to be oligotrophic environments whereas soil microflora is mostly heterotrophic in such way that microbial growth in soil is mainly limited by the scarce sources of readily available organic compounds (Wardle 1992). Therefore, in soils, microflora is mostly in stasis (fungistasis/bacteriostasis) (Lockwood 1977). In counterpart, plants are autotrophic organisms responsible for the primary production resulting from the photosynthesis. A significant part of photosynthetates are released from plant roots to the soil through a process called rhizodeposition. These products, i.e. the rhizodeposits, are made of exudates, lysates, mucilage, secretions and dead cell material, as well…

GAM/ZFp/ZNF512B is central to a gene sensor circuitry involving cell-cycle regulators, TGF beta effectors, Drosha and microRNAs with opposite oncogen…

2010

MicroRNAs (miRNAs) are small regulatory RNAs targeting multiple effectors of cell homeostasis and development, whose malfunctions are associated with major pathologies such as cancer. Herein we show that GAM/ZFp/ZNF512B works within an intricate gene regulatory network involving cell-cycle regulators, TGFβ effectors and oncogenic miRNAs of the miR-17-92 cluster. Thus, GAM impairs the transcriptional activation of the miR-17-92 promoter by c-Myc, downregulates miR-17-92 miRNAs differentially, and limits the activation of genes responsive to TGFβ canonical pathway. In contrast, TGFβ decreases GAM transcripts levels while differentially upregulating miR-17-92 miRNAs. In turn, miR-17, miR-20a a…

The Ricardian system: a graphical exposition

2017

Ever since its publication, Pasinetti’s 1960 paper has been a primary reference for all scholars interested in Ricardian economics. However, Kaldor's 1955-6 diagram is a very effective tool for depicting the salient features of the Ricardian system and its full heuristic potentialities are still under-explored. Accordingly, we give it pride of place in this paper. In what follows, after a brief presentation of a slightly amended version of Kaldor’s original diagram, we show how this diagram may be modified to represent Pasinetti’s two-sector model of a closed economy. Next we use it to analyse alternative consumption patterns. Finally, we employ a variant of Kaldor’s diagram to study a two-…

Contribution of polymorphisms in genes associated with craniofacial development to the risk of nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate in the Brazilian …

2012

Background and Objective: Nonsyndromic cleft lip and/or palate (NSCL/P) is a complex disease associated with both genetic and environmental factors. One strategy for identifying of possible NSCL/P genetic causes is to evaluate polymorphic variants in genes involved in the craniofacial development. Design: We carried out a case-control analysis of 13 single nucleotide polymorphisms in 9 genes related to craniofacial development, including TBX1, PVRL1, MID1, RUNX2, TP63, TGFB3, MSX1, MYH9 and JAG2 , in 367 patients with NSCL/P and 413 unaffected controls from Brazil to determine their association with NSCL/P. Results: Four out of 13 polymorphisms (rs28649236 and rs4819522 of TBX1, rs7940667 o…

Explaining the rising precariat in Spain

2020

[EN] Spanish GDP indicator figures recover while the risk of poverty has not stopped increasing since 2007 given the continuous austerity policies adopted by Governments, while labour and welfare conditions have worsened. A new phenomenon is emerging: the flattening of the Spanish middle class. This study proposes a model to quantify the number of individuals according to their level of precariousness in Spain. The model allows us to predict the behaviour of society in Spain given the mimetic nature of humans by constructing a discrete finite epidemiological model that classifies and quantifies the population in Spain according to its risk of precariousness. Our results show a rise in the p…

A dynamic analysis of SP 500, FTSE 100 and EURO STOXX 50 indices under different exchange rates.

2018

In this study, we assess the dynamic evolution of short-term correlation, long-term cointe-gration and Error Correction Model (hereafter referred to as ECM)-based long-term Granger causality between each pair of US, UK, and Eurozone stock markets from 1980 to 2015 using the rolling-window technique. A comparative analysis of pairwise dynamic integration and causality of stock markets, measured in common and domestic currency terms, is conducted to evaluate comprehensively how exchange rate fluctuations affect the time-varying integration among the S&P 500, FTSE 100 and EURO STOXX 50 indices. The results obtained show that the dynamic correlation, cointegration and ECM-based long-run Gra…

Neoclassical Convergence Versus Technological Catch-Up : A Contribution for Reaching a Consensus.

2004

http://www.businessperspectives.org/files/ppm/PPM_EN_2004_03pp15_42.pdf; International audience; New macro empirical evidence is provided to assess the relative importance of object andidea gaps in explaining the world income distribution dynamics over a benchmark period of 1960-1985. Results are then extended through 1995. Formal statistical hypothesis tests allow us to discriminatebetween two competing growth models: (i) the standard neoclassical growth model similarto that employed by Mankiw, Romer, and Weil (1992), and (ii) an endogenous growth modelclosely related to the Nelson and Phelps' approach (1966) that emphasizes the importance of technologytransfer in addition to factor accumu…
