Cloning and characterization of the promoter of Hugl-2, the human homologue of Drosophila lethal giant larvae (lgl) polarity gene.

The human lgl gene, Hugl-2 (llgl2, Lgl2), codes for a cytoskeletal protein involved in regulating cell polarity. Here, we report the identification and functional characterization of the promoter region ( approximately 1.2kb) of the Hugl-2 gene. Luciferase expression assays show a high basal Hugl-2 promoter activity in different cell lines and primary human hepatocytes. Truncations of the promoter identified a GC-rich region important for this activity. Alignment of human and mouse genomic sequences demonstrate that this is an evolutionary conserved region fcontaining putative binding sites for several transcription factors including Elk-1 and Sp-1. Measuring agglomeration by spatial effects: a proposal

In this paper we examine the influence of spatial dependence on the estimation of the effect of standard measures of agglomeration on local growth. The hypothesis is that the forces of agglomeration do not use up their effects inside a single local area but extend to wider geographic areas, particularly on the adjacent territories. To account for these spatial effects, we propose a modification of the traditional agglomeration index, suggested by Maurel and Sedillot (1999), including both agglomeration of economic activity within an area and neighbour effects, that is, the effect of agglomeration that comes from neighbouring areas. Changes in Onset of Vegetation Growth on Svalbard, 2000–2020

The global temperature is increasing, and this is affecting the vegetation phenology in many parts of the world. The most prominent changes occur at northern latitudes such as our study area, which is Svalbard, located between 76°30′N and 80°50′N. A cloud-free time series of MODIS-NDVI data was processed. The dataset was interpolated to daily data during the 2000–2020 period with a 231.65 m pixel resolution. The onset of vegetation growth was mapped with a NDVI threshold method which corresponds well with a recent Sentinel-2 NDVI-based mapping of the onset of vegetation growth, which was in turn validated by a network of in-situ phenological data from time lapse cameras. Material and Methods Cases of ameloblastoma initially underdiagnosed (e.g. cases overlooked or diagnosed as reactive lesions) which had adequate radiographic documentation to evaluate their progression were retrospectively selected. Stem cells are capable of extensive self-renewal while preserving the ability to generate cell progeny that can differentiate into different cell types. Here, we describe some methods for the isolation of neural stem cells (NSCs) from the adult murine subependymal zone (SEZ), their extensive culturing and the assessment of their full developmental potential, particularly with respect to their differentiation capacity. Guanaconetins, new antitumoral acetogenins, mitochondrial complex I and tumor cell growth inhibitors

The antitumoral activity of a series of acetylated bis-tetrahydrofuranic acetogenins with a threo/trans/threo/trans/erythro relative configuration was characterized by four new natural and two semisynthetic, 15,24,30-trioxygenated acetogenins that were found to inhibit mitochondrial complex I enzyme as well as growth of several tumor cell lines. Placement of acetyl groups along the alkyl chain modulated the potency of the bis-tetrahydrofuranic acetogenins and could be important for future utilization of these compounds as chemotherapeutic agents.

4,5,6,7-Tetrahydro-isoxazolo-[4,5-c]-pyridines as a new class of cytotoxic Hsp90 inhibitors.

Hsp90 is considered an interesting therapeutic target for anticancer drug development. Here we describe a new class of 4,5,6,7-tetrahydro-isoxazolo-[4,5-c]-pyridine compounds. A small library of derivatives has been synthesized and investigated. Some reported compounds show interesting properties combining both notable binding to Hsp90 and potent cell growth inhibitory activity. N-5 substitution with a 2,4 resorcinol carboxamide appears crucial for activity. Moreover, a derivative bearing a hydroxamic acid residue bound to C-3 amide portion was found to inhibit both Hsp90 and HDAC6.
