Controls on strontium and barium incorporation into freshwater bivalve shells ( Corbicula fluminea )
2017
Abstract Trace elements of bivalve shells can potentially serve as proxies of environmental change. However, to reconstruct past environments using the geochemical properties of the shells and determine the degree to which the element levels are biologically influenced, it is essential to experimentally determine the relationship between environmental variables and the element composition of the shells. To disentangle possible controls on the incorporation of strontium and barium into freshwater bivalve shells, we conducted controlled laboratory experiments using the extremely salinity and temperature tolerant Asian clam, Corbicula fluminea as a model species. Bivalves were reared for five …

Growth Volatility Indices
2006
We study the determinants of growth rate volatility in a multisector economy where sectors are heterogeneous in their individual volatility. We propose a model where aggregate volatility is explained by structural change and the size of the economy. We present a first attempt to test these predictions measuring growth volatility by indices based on Markov transition matrices. Growth volatility appears to (i) decrease with total GDP and (ii) increase with the share of the agricultural sector on GDP, although some nonlinearities appear. Trade openness, which we relate to the size of the economy, also plays a role. In accordance with our model, the explanatory power of per capita GDP, a releva…
Factors of Development of the Management of the Design Education in Latvia
2015
<p>The author proceeds with the discussion of significant problems in design industry and education in Europe and Latvia. This research is devoted to several important aspects in the development of design education in Latvia. Design education which is mainly based on the meaning of design as an aesthetic component of products, environment or communication, includes only a narrow range of specializations in the traditional fields of design. This concept affects the structure of design education and an beliefs of the areas in which designers will be able to work. Insufficiency of public awareness and understanding of the essence of design results in limited demand of design products and…
Rural Municipalities and Change in Local School Structure: Comparing Room of manoeuvre among Rural Municipalities in Latvia and Norway
2018
Rural depopulation, decreasing numbers of children and general centralization combined with high expectations to education, are factors that challenge rural communities and school structures in Latvia and Norway. The ambition of this article is to explore and compare the role of the municipality and other levels of governance in making decisions on school structure in rural municipalities. The research method is a multiple case study approach, supported by survey data. Through the lenses of multi-level governance theory, we have investigated how national frames like regulations and educational expectations are affecting local decision-making. Local politicians navigate between national fram…
Large‐scale set partitioning problems: Some real‐world instances hide a beneficial structure
2006
In this paper we consider large‐scale set partitioning problems. Our main purpose is to show that real‐world set partitioning problems originating from the container‐trucking industry are easier to tackle in respect to general ones. We show such different behavior through computational experiments: in particular, we have applied both a heuristic algorithm and some exact solution approaches to real‐world instances as well as to benchmark instances from Beasley OR‐library. Moreover, in order to gain an insight into the structure of the real‐world instances, we have performed and evaluated various instance perturbations. Didelės matematinės aibės dalijimo problemų sprendimas, nagrinėjant reali…
Development and Structure of Environmental Worries in Germany 1984–2019
2021
Abstract Referring to a survey question in the German socio-economic panel, which measures worries about protecting the environment, the article looks at the development of environmental worries in Germany for the timespan 1984–2019. The analyses mainly have descriptive character. We explore several expectations and assumptions discussed in historical accounts of the environmental movement in Germany and in empirical studies on environmental attitudes and their determinants. Results show that the overall development can be divided into a period of rising environmental worries in the 1980s, a considerable decline in the 1990s, and a relative stability since 2000. From 2018 to 2019, however, …
Implementation of a global P-recovery system in urban wastewater treatment plants
2019
[EN] Current wastewater treatment plants (WWTPs) paradigm is moving towards the so-called water resource recovery facilities in which sewage is considered a source of valuable resources. In particular, urban WWTPs are crucial systems to enhance phosphorus (P) recycling. This paper evaluates the implementation of a P-recovery system in Calahorra WWTP combining the operation of a new sludge line configuration coupled to a struvite crystallisation reactor at demonstration-scale. This new configuration consisted in the elutriation in the gravity thickener of the mixed sludge contained in the mixing chamber in order to reduce the phosphate load to the anaerobic digestion. The results indicated t…

Prolidase in the Marine Sponge Suberites domuncula: Enzyme Activity, Molecular Cloning, and Phylogenetic Relationship
1999
: The enzyme prolidase hydrolyzes the peptide bond that involves the imino nitrogen of proline or hydroxyproline; hence, it catalyzes the final step in collagen degradation. From mammals it is known that this enzyme plays a major role in the recycling of proline for collagen synthesis and can be considered to be essential for the control of cell growth. The dominant organic exoskeleton in sponges, especially in Demospongiae, is collagen and the collagen-related spongin. Here we demonstrate that crude extracts of the demosponge Suberites domuncula contain prolidase or prolidase-like activity. The complementary DNA encoding the putative prolidase was cloned from a library of the same animal. …
