p38 MAPK: A dual role in hepatocyte proliferation through reactive oxygen species

2013

p38 MAPKs are important mediators of signal transduction that respond to a wide range of extracellular stressors such as UV radiation, osmotic shock, hypoxia, pro-inflammatory cytokines, and oxidative stress. The most abundant family member is p38α, which helps to couple cell proliferation and growth in response to certain damaging stimuli. In fact, increased proliferation and impaired differentiation are hallmarks of p38α-deficient cells. It has been reported that reactive oxygen species (ROS) play a critical role in cytokine-induced p38α activation. Under physiological conditions, p38α can function as a mediator of ROS signaling and either activate or suppress cell cycle progression depen…

Polyreactions in ordered systems: Polymerization of octadecyl methacrylate in monolayers at the gas–water interface

1977

The ultraviolet-initiated polymerization of octadecyl methacrylate (ODMA, octadecyl 2-methyl-2-propenoate) as a monomolecular layer at the gas-water interface was studied. The polymerization was carried out at 27°C at the nitrogen-water interface; air inhibits the polymerization. At 27°C the ODMA monolayer exhibits three different states which were characterized by surface pressure-area diagrams and by surface potential measurements. The ODMA monolayer was polymerized under constant surface pressure in the range between 0 and 10 dyne/cm. The polymerization was followed by recording the contraction of the film. The conversion was determined by comparison of the area per monomer unit during p…

The role of dislocations in the solid-state polymerization of monomers having conjugated triple bonds: A study of 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol bis(p-toluen…

1975

The crystal structure of the monomer bis(p-toluene sulfonate) ester of 2,4-hexadiyne-1,6-diol (pT) is conducive from the viewpoint of both the separation distances and molecular configuration, to polymerization, irrespective of whether initiation is thermal, photochemical, or mechanical. The dislocations present in the monomer and polymer structures have been characterized by employing optical microscopic techniques. The slip system (102)[010] is found to be present in both monomer and polymer crystals but the (010)[001] system is found only in the monomer. On this basis a crystal structure for the monomer is proposed based on existing crystallographic information relating to the structure …

Extension of the Concept of Intrinsic Viscosities to Arbitrary Polymer Concentration: From [η] via {η} to Intrinsic Bulkiness

2019

The capabilities of an alternative definition of intrinsic viscosities [η] published some years ago is being studied by means of comprehensive viscometric data reported in the early days of polymer science. It introduces the generalized intrinsic viscosity {η} as the specific hydrodynamic volume at arbitrary polymer concentration c. {η} quantifies the size of the flow unit and decreases monotonously for T ≫ Tg (glass transition temperature) as a function of c but passes a pronounced minimum as T approaches Tg. In the limit of the pure polymer melt, {η} becomes ; this newly introduced property is termed intrinsic bulkiness, by analogy to the intrinsic viscosity, and provides noncalorimetric …

Synthesis of well-defined polymeric activated esters

2008

Monomers bearing an activated ester group can be polymerized under various controlled polymerization techniques, such as ATRP, NMP, RAFT polymerization, or ROMP. Combining the functionalization of polymers via polymeric activated esters with these controlled polymerization techniques generate possibilities to realize highly functionalized polymer architectures. Within this highlight two different research areas of activated esters in polymer science will be discussed: (i) the preparation of defined reactive polymer architectures by controlled polymerization techniques and (ii) the preparation of defined reactive thin films. © 2008 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Effects of UVB radiation exposure from the molecular to the organism level in macrophytes from shallow Mediterranean habitats

2015

Abstract The available data on the effects of UVB radiation (UVBR) are scarce for submerged macrophytes, particularly charophytes. We studied the effects of UVBR on Chara baltica, Chara hispida, Chara vulgaris, Nitella hyalina and Myriophyllum spicatum, collected from shallow Mediterranean waterbodies. In a short-term laboratory experiment, we subjected these species to three different UVBR treatments corresponding to daily biologically effective integrated doses of 0, 1 and 6 kJ m−2. The analysed response variables were DNA damage, UV-absorbing compounds (both the methanol-soluble–SUVACs- and, for the first time in charophytes, the methanol-insoluble cell wall-bound fraction–WUVACs-), the …

Research on the Diurnal Courses of Abscissic Acid, 1-Aminocyclopropane Carboxylic Acid and Its Malonyl Conjugate Contents in Needles of Damaged and U…

1993

Ethylene regulates many aspects of plant growth, development and senescence. The immediate precursor of ethylene was identified as 1-aminocyclopropane carboxylic acid (ACC) [7]. Amrhein et al. [1] discovered that ACC supplied exogenously was efficiently converted into ACC malonyl conjugate (MACC) along with ethylene production.

Plant-growth-regulatingN-(phosphonoacetyl)amines

1994

A series of N‐(phosphonacetyl)amine derivatives were synthesized and screened for plant‐growth regulating activity on Lepidium sativum L. and Cucumis sativus L. Aromatic N‐(phosphonoacetyl)amines. which may be considered as possible analogues of N‐acylaniline herbicides obtained by replacement of their acyl group by the phosphonacetyl moiety, exhibited significant or moderate herbicidal activity. In contrast, N‐(phosphonoacetyl)amino acids and N‐(phosphonoacetyl)aminophosphonic acids promoted the growth of L. sativum and C. sativus roots.

Are polymers suitable rock analogs?

2002

To evaluate if a polymer is suitable for analog modeling, it is essential to know the rheological properties of the material. Polymers used in analog modeling exhibit a complex rheological behavior; only part of which has been taken into account in most modeling studies. The mechanical behavior is strongly dependent on strain rate and temperature, and is characterized by specific dependencies of the storage and loss moduli, related to the elasticity and viscosity, on the deformation rate (frequency). We have measured the storage and loss moduli at a broad range of strain rates and strains, using an oscillatory parallel-disk rheometer. Investigated materials are polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS), …
