Cyclic [2]Pseudorotaxane Tetramers Consisting of Two Rigid Rods Threaded through Two Bis-Macrocycles: Copper(I)-Templated Synthesis and X-ray Structu…

2008

Variously substituted coordinating rigid rods have been synthesized which incorporate a central 4,7-phenanthroline nucleus attached to two 2-pyridyl groups via its 3 and 8 positions, so as to yield bis-bidentate chelates, the two-coordinating axes of the chelates being parallel to one another. Regardless of the nature of the substituents borne by the rods, the copper(I)-induced threading reaction of two such rods through the rings of two bis-macrocycles affords in a quantitative yield the 4-copper(I) threaded assembly. The [2]pseudorotaxane tetramers thus obtained have been fully characterized in solution and, for one of them, an X-ray structure could be obtained, confirming the threaded na…

Fluorescent substituted amidines of benzanthrone: synthesis, spectroscopy and quantum chemical calculations.

2012

Abstract Several new substituted amidine derivatives of benzanthrone were synthesized by a condensation reaction from 3-aminobenzo[de]anthracen-7-one and appropriate aromatic and aliphatic amides. The obtained derivatives have a bright yellow or orange fluorescence in organic solvents and in solid state. The novel benzanthrone derivatives were characterized by TLC analysis, 1H NMR, IR, MS, UV/vis, and fluorescence spectroscopy. The solvent effect on photophysical behaviors of these dyes was investigated, and the results showed that the Stoke’s shift increased, whereas quantum yield decreased with the growth of the solvent polarity. The structure of some dyes was confirmed by the X-ray singl…

Calix[4]arene-Based Bis[2]catenanes: Synthesis and Chiral Resolution

2007

The exclusive formation of hydrogen-bonded dimers between tetraaryl and tetratosylurea calix[4]arenes has been used to prepare a series of ten "bisloop" tetraurea calix[4]arenes 3, in which adjacent phenylurea groups are covalently linked through alpha,omega-dioxyalkane chains. This dimerization with tetratosylurea 2 as template preorganizes the alkenyl residues of tetra(m-alkenyloxyphenyl) ureas 1 and enables their selective connection in high yield (up to 95 %) by olefin metathesis followed by hydrogenation. The "bisloop" calixarenes 3 also exclusively form heterodimers with 1. Thus, in a separated metathesis/hydrogenation sequence, a series of 14 cyclic bis[2]catenanes 4, in which two ca…

A chirality-induced alpha phase and a novel molecular magnetic metal in the BEDT-TTF/tris(croconate)ferrate(iii) hybrid molecular system

2006

The novel paramagnetic and chiral anion [Fe(C5O5)3]32 has been combined with the organic donor BEDT-TTF (= ET = bis(ethylenedithio)tetrathiafulvalene) to yield the first chirality- induced α phase and a paramagnetic metal. Synthesis and Self-Organization of Zinc β-(Dialkoxyphosphoryl)porphyrins in the Solid State and in Solution

2012

The first synthesis and self-organization of zinc β-phosphorylporphyrins in the solid state and in solution are reported. β-Dialkoxyphosphoryl-5,10,15,20-tetraphenylporphyrins and their Zn(II) complexes have been synthesized in good yields by using Pd- and Cu-mediated carbon-phosphorous bond-forming reactions. The Cu-mediated reaction allowed to prepare the mono-β-(dialkoxyphosphoryl)porphyrins 1 Zn-3 Zn starting from the β-bromo-substituted zinc porphyrinate ZnTPPBr (TPP = tetraphenylporphyrin) and dialkyl phosphites HP(O)(OR)(2) (R = Et, iPr, nBu). The derivatives 1 Zn-3 Zn were obtained in good yields by using one to three equivalents of CuI. When the reaction was carried out in the pres…

Amplification of Dissymmetry Factors in π-Extended [7]- and [9]Helicenes

2021

International audience; $\pi$-Extended helicenes constitute an important class of polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons with intrinsic chirality. Herein, we report the syntheses of $\pi$extended [7]helicene $4$ and $\pi$-extended [9]helicene $6$ through regioselective cyclodehydrogenation in high yields, where a "prefusion" strategy plays a key role in preventing undesirable aryl rearrangements. The unique helical structures are unambiguously confirmed by X-ray crystal structure analysis. Compared to the parent pristine [7]helicene and [9]helicene, these novel $\pi$-extended helicenes display significantly improved photophysical properties, with a quantum yield of 0.41 for $6$. After optical res…

Origins of fluorescence in evolved bacteriophytochromes

2014

Use of fluorescent proteins to study in vivo processes in mammals requires near-infrared (NIR) biomarkers that exploit the ability of light in this range to penetrate tissue. Bacteriophytochromes (BphPs) are photoreceptors that couple absorbance of NIR light to photoisomerization, protein conformational changes, and signal transduction. BphPs have been engineered to form NIR fluorophores, including IFP1.4, Wi-Phy, and the iRFP series, initially by replacement of Asp-207 by His. This position was suggestive because its main chain carbonyl is within hydrogen-bonding distance to pyrrole ring nitrogens of the biliverdin chromophore, thus potentially functioning as a crucial transient proton sin…

Mechanisms of DNA damage by photoexcited 9-methyl-β-carbolines

2013

It has been well documented that β-carboline alkaloids, particularly the 9-methyl derivatives, are efficient photosensitizers. However, structure–activity relationships are missing and the photochemical mechanisms involved in the DNA photodamage still remain unknown. In the present work, we examined the capability of three 9-methyl-β-carbolines (9-methyl-norharmane, 9-methyl-harmane and 9-methylharmine) to induce DNA damage upon UVA excitation at physiological pH. The type and extent of the damage was analyzed together with the photophysical and binding properties of the β-carboline derivatives investigated. The results indicate that even at neutral pH most of the DNA damage is generated fr…

Understanding the Mechanism of the Intramolecular Stetter Reaction. A DFT Study

2012

The mechanism of the N-heterocyclic carbene (NHC)-catalyzed intramolecular Stetter reaction of salicylaldehyde 1 to yield chromanone 3 has been theoretically studied at the B3LYP/6-31G** level. This NHC-catalyzed reaction takes place through six elementary steps, which involve: (i) formation of the Breslow intermediate IN2; (ii) an intramolecular Michael-Type addition in IN2 to form the new C-C s bond; and (iii) extrusion of the NHC catalyst from the Michael adduct to yield chromanone 3. Analysis of the relative free energies in toluene indicates that while formation of Breslow intermediate IN2 involves the rate-determining step of the catalytic process, the intramolecular Michael-type addi…

Multifaceted Palladium Catalysts Towards the Tandem Diboration-Arylation Reactions of Alkenes

2008

Novel Pd(2) (6+) compounds have been synthesized in high yield. These compounds and their Pd(2) (4+) counterparts as synthetic precursors mediate the diboration of vinylarenes and aliphatic 1-alkenes, and under mild and basic reaction conditions they produce a variety of 1,2-diboronate esters with excellent conversions and chemoselectivities. The presence of bis(catecholato)diboron (B(2)cat(2)) favours the reduction of Pd(III) to Pd(II), while the catalytic precursor of Pd(II) is transformed into Pd(0)-nanoparticles. An "in situ" catalytic tandem reaction has been designed to transform the diboronate intermediates into the monoarylated product, which after oxidative workup, provides the car…
