Genetic studies are a new area of physical activity research and also the motives for physical activity have been widely studied. FM Mari Saarinen on tutkinut väitöskirjassaan Paraergasilus rylovi -äyriäisloisen biologiaa sen isännässä, Anodonta piscinalis -pikkujärvisimpukassa. Työ on perustavaa laatua oleva, sillä tästä loisesta ei lajinkuvauksen lisäksi ole tiedetty aiemmin mitään.Saarisen tutkimuksissa kartoitetaan äyriäisloisen esiintymistä ja loisinnan voimakkuutta eri simpukkalajeilla eri osissa Suomea. Tulokset osoittivat, että loinen on erikoistunut käyttämään pikkujärvisimpukkaa isäntänään ja että loinen esiintyy Suomessa vain maan eteläosissa.
