Environmental Correlates of Motor Competence in Children -The Skilled Kids Study
2019
Environment, physical activity (PA) and motor development are tightly interwoven during childhood. We examined the associations of environmental factors with motor competence (MC) in children. Children (N = 945, 50.1% boys, age = 3–7 years, mean = 5.4 years) from 37 childcare centres in the Southern (n = 17), Central (n = 13) and Northern Finland (n = 7) participated. The environmental factors comprised the geographical location (Southern, Central and Northern Finland) and residential density (metropolitan area, city, rural area and countryside) of the childcare centres’ based on postal codes and the national population density registry. MC was measured using the Test of Gross Motor Develop…
Hilliness and the Development of Walking Difficulties Among Community-Dwelling Older People
2018
Objective: The objective of this study is to study the associations of objectively defined hilliness with the prevalence and incidence of walking difficulties among community-dwelling older adults, and to explore whether behavioral, health, or socioeconomic factors would fully or partially explain these associations. Method: Baseline interviews ( n = 848, 75-90 years) on difficulties in walking 500 m, frequency of moving through the neighborhood, and perceived hilliness as a barrier to outdoor mobility were conducted. Two-year follow-up interviews ( n = 551) on difficulties in walking 500 m were conducted among participants without baseline walking difficulties. Hilliness objectively defin…
Genetic and Environmental Influences Underlying Externalizing Behaviors, Cigarette Smoking and Illicit Drug Use Across Adolescence
2012
We investigated genetic and environmental influences common to adolescent externalizing behavior (at age 12), smoking (at age 14) and initiation of drug use (at age 17) using the FinnTwin12 cohort data. Multivariate Cholesky models were fit to data from 737 monozygotic and 722 dizygotic twin pairs. Heritability of externalizing behavior was 56%, that of smoking initiation/amount 20/32%, and initiation of drug use 27%. In the best-fitting model common environmental influences explained most of the covariance between externalizing behavior and smoking initiation (69%) and amount (77%). Covariance between smoking initiation/amount and drug use was due to additive genetic (42/22%) and common en…
Greening the balanced scorecard
2010
Environmental management issues have received an increased amount of attention in recent years, as have various performance measurement systems (PMS) such as the balanced scorecard (BSC). However, implementation of these systems is challenging due to the differences found amongst the companies and users of PMS. This study investigates how the presence of particular supporting factors served to facilitate a PMS change that incorporated environmental measures. Utilization of extant change models enables us to investigate different change factors like advancing and hindering forces, momentum, and the leaders of change. We found two models appropriate for investigating environmental management …
Mielenterveyden ja hyvinvoinnin edistämiseen keskittyvän koulutuksen tuomat mahdollisuudet alakoulun opettajien tietotaitoihin
2015
Korppi-Tommola Milla, 2015, Mielenterveyden ja hyvinvoinnin edistämiseen keskittyvän koulutuksen tuomat mahdollisuudet alakoulun opettajien tietotaitoihin. Jyväskylän Yliopiston Opettajankoulutuslaitos, Kasvatustieteiden tiedekunta, Pro gradu-tutkielma. 60 sivua.
Assessment of environmental impacts with life cycle methods in nanotechnology industry
2013
This thesis inspected how nanotechnology companies in Finland have been assessing the environmental impacts of their products and processes. The research focused on using life cycle based methods that take into account the environmental impacts during the whole lifetime of a product. The subject was studied mainly through three qualitative case studies. Millidyne Oy, Vaisala Oyj and UPM-Kymmene Oyj were interviewed. Also quantitative research was used to some extend in the form of a company questionnaire. This research showed that only 13 % of nanotechnology companies in Finland have done environmental assessments with life cycle methods, and that even this figure is likely to be biased and…
Practices of development assistance and climate change mitigation in reshaping the Mozambican REDD+ strategy
2020
ABSTRACTThis paper studies how the practices of climate change governance and development assistance have reshaped the Reducing Emissions from Deforestation and Forest Degradation (REDD) process in Mozambique. We look at how the original goals of the Mozambican REDD+ strategy changed in the interplay of different governance-related practices, both those originating locally and nationally, and those coming from international organisations. The paper is based on the frameworks of multilevel governance and practice theory. We identify six combinations of practices that are relevant in the REDD+ programmes and projects. Three of them are incorporated in the general idea of sustainability, inclu…
Reliable fluorescence technique to detect the antibiotic colistin, a possible environmental threat due to its overuse.
2022
AbstractColistin, considered a drug of last resort as it is effective towards multidrug-resistant Gram-negative bacterial infections. Oral administration of colistin in the poultry industry is a common practice, not only to prevent and reduce bacterial infections, but also as a rapid-growth promoter. Long-term exposure to any antibiotic will eventually lead to the development of bacterial resistance towards all antibiotics through various mechanisms in the physiological system and environment. Chicken is the most consumed source of animal protein for humans throughout the world. In addition, the manure of poultry, containing traces of the used antibiotics, is being used in farming. Exposure…
Multisite musculoskeletal pain trajectories from midlife to old age : a 28-year follow-up of municipal employees
2018
ObjectivesWe studied the developmental trajectories of multisite musculoskeletal pain (MSP) to learn whether pain in midlife persists to old age, and whether pain trajectories associate with midlife work or lifestyle exposures or retirement from work.MethodsMunicipal employees aged 44–58 years were studied in 1981 (n=6257) with follow-ups in 1985, 1992, 1997 and 2009. Pain in the neck, low back, and upper and lower limbs was assessed in each survey. Trajectories of the number (0–4) of pain sites were defined using growth mixture modelling (n=3093). Workload, lifestyle and morbidity were elicited by questionnaire and retirement from registries. Associations of baseline factors with pain traj…
Mobility decline in old age.
2012
Mobility is important for community independence. With increasing age, underlying pathologies, genetic vulnerabilities, physiological and sensory impairments, and environmental barriers increase the risk for mobility decline. Understanding how mobility declines is paramount to finding ways to promote mobility in old age. peerReviewed
